Knob End Match Fred 12:41 - Aug 6 with 41554 views | Beckenhamhoop | Getting in very early on this one. I only started one match thread last season and we won 4-0 so here’s hoping my luck continues especially as it’s such a huge fixture. Not just because it’s the first game of the season or because it’s the first game for JS, not just because the pressure is on us to beat a team, at home, that many have tipped to be relegated but because this team needs to win for its fragile confidence. To get its supporters to forget about gardening leave and divided opinions. My anxiety levels are way higher than normal for this game and with the injuries we’ve accumulated so early in the season I don’t think they’re going to drop, especially if Dunne and Cook are unavailable. You wait for months for the season to start and this is what you get; a knot in the pit of your stomach. I’m going for a rollercoaster 3-2 win. Chair with the first. C’mon you soooopahhooooopsah.

Did it not cross yer mind if we were playing the motorway maintenance eleven?

6/10...? Oh Lord, it's started. 😄

Knob End Match Fred on 18:49 - Aug 9 by joe90 | Pleasantly surprised by the performance! As others have said, first half was good with lots of positives. Got caught off guard for the equaliser, and our heads dropped. Like the look of some the new boys - Mbengue the stand out for me. Also liked the look of Esquerdinha. I love that we’ve signed a Fluminense player! IMO - more positives than negatives. |
I agree more positives than negatives. Just frustrating to see more garbage from Madsen after last season's garbage. Really annoys me. I think he's a terrible player. Also puzzled by the Walsh over Nardi thing. Just can't see it myself, but he's young so guess we'll just have to see how he develops if that's the decision that's been made. Enough seen first half to think we won't be right down the bottom though. Just wish we'd stop getting all these injuries and we may have a push at upper mid table

Side note: I've seen Miss Jones naked in Stratford upon Avon. I mean, she was, not me. Antony and Cleopatra, don'cha know? Hay clarse, me.

Knob End Match Fred on 20:54 - Aug 9 with 2334 views | Malintabuk | Agree with most here... thought there were a lot of positives in the 1st half... and we deserved to go in leading Thought the whole team in that 1st half played well... and said at half time I thought Madsen controlled that midfield 2nd half... they came out and got into us.. and we conceded pretty much a freak goal. Defenders up for a corner... the keeper gathers it and passes it 60 yards perfectly... that was possibly the 1stcand only time he will ever do that... and the striker lobs the keeper with precision... The only real downs for me, was injuries again... we faded badly.... and Walsh... I hate to say it but he is not a championship keeper... he had a nightmare against Castillion and for my money in no man's land for their goal...

I felt a little for Walsh, he’s been a good shot stopper in his few appearances to date, but apart from claiming the header back late in the game he had no chance to make up for being chipped…but then Nardi was being beaten by unstoppable goals early last season while having no saves to make too. But the breakdown with the ball at his feet at about 20 mins was painful to watch. Strange early season game. We didn’t lose, but we won’t play many weaker teams. I doubt Hull will be one without a further financial meltdown. Morgan was surprisingly decent at fullback, but Mbengue was more convincing there than he was at centre back - I was cursing the Lino at first, but they can’t all have been offside, I suspect he was charging ahead of the others. Celar showed nice touches, but isn’t fast or aggressive enough for this league. Burnell was electric chasing but I don’t remember him having the ball at his feet…but he’d surely draw back two or three players out of our box if he stood on halfway when we’re defending corners. Madsen was good in the first half when we dominated possession, vanished in the second when we didn’t, Field probably wanted to disappear a couple of times in the second. Do we have to wait for November again to know who we are? Clear positives - Dembélé’s best game for us by far, hope he’s not too badly hurt, Morrison very good again, Esquerdinha looks an upgrade on Larkeche at least. [Post edited 9 Aug 22:21]

Improve in a organised way yes ,say here’s a bunch of dev player off u go NO squad is paper thin and with poku sounding like he’s done his hamstring even thinner now , all for giving decent kids a go but not all at once

Knob End Match Fred on 22:34 - Aug 9 with 1963 views | Hunterhoop | Not quite sure how anyone thinks Esquadinha had a good game. Miles out of his depth. Positionally, physically, and in possession. He could well come on…but nowhere near it currently. Adamson similar (although I appreciate he was the wrong side). Madsen started well but faded badly second half, which was a big part of the reason they started to dominate. Mbengue is very likeable. Thought Morrison was excellent and pushed Dembele for MoTM. Personally, I thought Celar was rubbish again, and a complete passenger apart from one moment of hold up play that led to the goal. Just makes me think how good we could be with someone who does that regularly. Thought Burrell looked miles better when he came on. Made good runs and he’s quick enough to get on the end of them. Very exciting.

I was worried for him pre match. I think I said I had him down as the scapegoat of the team but I was pleasantly surprised. Maybe my expectations were low. Can’t remember much happening for Preston on his side, but that might be due to a lack of quality from Preston.

I thought Preston were mostly up his wing, based on tape of the Paal-Madsen-Dembélé softness at the end of last season. Route one for them seemed to be a diagonal to Small (26) but Esquerdinha coped well. Chair got frustrated with his use of the ball, but early days. [Post edited 9 Aug 23:25]

Knob End Match Fred on 06:36 - Aug 10 with 1476 views | NorthantsHoop | Overall thought draw a fair result. Dembele probably our brightest spark of the game. Walsh needs to work on his distribution, he was really poor with it. I liked Burrell when he came on looks quick, closed down well and in vast contrast to Celar, who just looks a lost cause. It would be nice if we could extend his contract nice and early as he's either one to sell at a profit or one to build a team around for many years. He's a fantastic player.

Knob End Match Fred on 18:35 - Aug 9 by EuroRanger | Agreed, it's pretty depressing reading this forum sometimes. I'm a recent member (been reading Clive's stuff for a couple of years and since I don't have Twitter I wanted somewhere to talk QPR) and honestly it's quite off-putting. You'd have thought we got battered from some of the comments on here, and that Celar and Madsen were the devil incarnate. We faded quickly in the second half which makes me concerned for our fitness and depth (long season ahead), but plenty of positives to take away. Attacking football that created chances, plenty of possession and a couple of players who looked really tasty (Esquerdinha especially). Unfortunate about a cheap goal but it happens. |
But I think we can we wary and smell the roses at the same time. On the one hand it was OK, on the other is the genuine concern that may actually have been one of, if not the, easiest home game of the season and if Preston had won it would hardly have been an injustice. I like Joe Walsh, but to me he looked nervous and maybe that was because he had been thrown in to a pressure situation, basically saying you are the No.1 - now prove it. I am struggling to believe that Stephan made that decision from looking at all the videos of last season. Nardi wasn't perfect, but to me had done enough to start the season. The logical thing would be to have Walsh put Nardi under pressure and if Nardi stayed rooted to his line for the first few games, then introduce Walsh. Very strange, for me, that Stephan decided that and so I am guessing it was orders from above. Perhaps the same with Madsen. I want Celar to succeed like anyone else, but if you just watch him at the game you really struggle to see how he is going to. He just has zero presence, lacks movement and fine he did, what, two decent layoffs but that's hardly the total of what we need from our No.9. Obviously Dunne will improve this team, that's the main positive I took, aside from Poku and Dembele looking a decent threat and an early sign that Durrell is at least prepared to run about.
Knob End Match Fred on 07:18 - Aug 10 with 1344 views | dmm | Just catching up with this thread. Overall most seem to feel it was a curate's egg of a game. And it was. I've not seen any comments on the team's playing out from the back. It looked better structured than it was last season and I felt on the whole it worked quite well. PNE didn't press hard so there will be tougher tests to come, but hopefully it was evidence that Stephan and his coaches' organisation is having a positive effect.

Knob End Match Fred on 18:21 - Aug 9 by numptydumpty | Good God What a fricking miserable bunch qpr fans on here truly are. From nearly all on here you would think we are doomed for relegation. Makes me wonder as to keep posting on here. Today for me, was a decent start.. We were undone by a sucker punch but its hardly signs we are heading for the starts of the past couple of seasons. Pace and muscle has been added which was good to see. And couple of key players out, possibly could have tipped the balance in our favour. And its the first game. What a load of miserable buggers, we have on here. Likely am guessing people that watch from their armchairs Personally i think there was some promise and also was key to at least secure the draw.... Several first teamers out and several performances of note from new players. [Post edited 9 Aug 18:22]

This is more or less where I am at the moment. I've loved this forum for years but it's feeling a bit too doom laden at the moment almost as if some people actually want the team/club to fail. I'm not sure that attitude is in line with the majority or fans. Attendances and ticket sales have been good. Atmosphere in the ground has not been too bad, generally pretty positive. But there are some miserable sods on here that do make me question why I keep coming back.

Knob End Match Fred on 17:22 - Aug 9 by aston_hoop | 2 teenagers at full back, centre backs were 22 and 23. Of course we still had that defensive moment of madness and I think we'll need 'club dad' Steve Cook quite a bit this season as well as Jimmy's experience. But I think that is positive. Mbengue is a proper player isn't he? |
He loves a bicycle kick clearance. Of what I've seen of him, we've managed to clone Bob Hazell and Paul Parker into an all action, no nonsense, zippy chap. He and Morrison will have far sterner tests then yesterday, but they did look rather solid. Promising debuts for Mbengue, Poku, and Essie.

Knob End Match Fred on 08:47 - Aug 10 with 1077 views | WestbourneR | Lots of good things. Think Dembele is going to be huge this season. He’s so strong despite his size. Expecting lots of goals and assists. Morgan also looks like he could kick on. Big ticks for Mbengue and Poku too alongside Morrison. But anyone that thinks Celar is anything but a wholesale dud needs their eyes examined. Yes he went through the motions of laying the ball off (in simple situs not under pressure) but his off the ball movement at the same level as Conor Washington. He simply will not anticipate and attack a ball into the box. He’s static and weak. He’s mentally weak. He must be moved on. Take the hit, accept a loss, put it behind us.

Knob End Match Fred on 08:59 - Aug 10 with 1022 views | smudgehoop | Given our starting line-up I thought it was a very promising display. Our attacking play seems to pose a genuine threat, and despite a few wobbles at the back, our defending did enough. Essie going forwards was great to watch. I think we could develop into a side that has the potential to really counter-attack and sucker-punch teams. COYRs

That goal was all to do with Dembele dancing through their penalty area causing panic. Watching his energy and willingness to get forward at every chance, I am going to stick my neck out and say that if we started with Burrell, we would be 3-4 up at half time. Celar doesn't fit into the team and it shows.

The lack of credit Dembele is getting for that goal is weird. I’d like to see more of that kind of purpose from players bearing down on goal.

Thought it was brilliant. Loved the way he beat the first player and how he kept his feet while being fouled by the second and still got a cross off. He was good in that first half. Thought his decision making for the two first-half shots was maybe questionable, but very exciting, fast and direct.
