I’m not a Scarlets supporter but to eliminate a presence at the top level in what is a very enthusiastic area steeped with history is mind blowing. Their supporters are not going to support a Swansea based team purely on grounds of principle.
Likewise, to dissolve the Ospreys or a Swansea based club is equally senseless. No Swansea based supporter will go to Parc y Scarlets for a ‘home’ game. And as a large city, it wouldn’t make sense for one of the two sides to be based here.
The WRU have royally effed up and are now having to make some very unpopular decisions.
They should be going all out to be part of an Anglo Welsh league though why the well supported, successful English clubs would want the Welsh sides is open to debate. I do believe it would raise attendance and interest to all sides if it were to happen though. |  |

Things have changed a lot since you lived here. Swans were getting bigger crowds than the Ospreys when they had Gavin Henson, Shane Williams, James Hook etc, most of the grand slam winning Wales team and were going deep in the rugby equivalent of the Champions league. We were in league one playing Yeovil and Southend.
People vote with their feet every time there is a rugby game on at any level excluding international.

Maybe changing the fixture list to Saturday games would help. Older fans have drifted away and younger fans aren’t interested no matter how many cheap tickets you offer them it seems.

Welsh rugby fans are to blame. They did not show up in big to see the best teams in Europe Leinster and Munster but wil turn up in big numbers to play Bath and Gloucester and any English team really. It is just the way it is.
Llanelli has too small a population. They should play some games in Llanelli but most at Swansea. |  |

As Warren Gatland recently commented, "I think there was a period where we became so woke and we were so afraid of what we said." The focus on meeting diversity targets risks overshadowing the core goals of Welsh rugby: Developing talent and delivering competitive teams on the pitch.

I've said in the past that the success of the Welsh football teams, both club and National over the last 10-15 years, in addition to the growth of the Premier League, has put a significant dent in the amount of people interested in Rugby on a day to day basis, certainly amongst the younger generations.
It's not a coincidence that the flow of younger players has started to stutter. Those who would be breaking through now would have been kids in the 2010's and easily attracted towards football instead. The WRU are left with slender pickings.
It's going to take a lot to attract them back, and a losing National Team playing boring modern Rugby is probably not going to do it. | |

I would imagine that the WRU has close ties with the Senedd. As someone who has dealt with the Senedd on numerous occasions they have ridiculously tight rules regarding diversity and the Welsh language, particularly with grants and funding. The WRU has/had a long term loan from the Senedd, was this what Gatland was talking about. | | | |
