First goal was coming and as the commentary said a beautiful 35 yard screamer from Banks heading in on the line.

Gateshead don't look the same side form a couple of seasons ago. Defensively they're nervous, midfield looks weak and up front there are danger signs but it isn't sticking.

Dale second goal great pass from Banks sublime touch run and cross Fri Devante followed by a good finish from Mani

Some really good football on show so far. Quite a gulf between the two teams in the first half. A combination of Gateshead not being as strong as a couple of seasons ago plus us being stronger.
Rodney in particular playing well.

Are you not entertained?

Great performance with two excellent goals. Their keeper had a blinder and kept the score down. Everyone contributed and the subs made an impact.

A big thanks to the players. Long may it continue.

Couldn't be there tonight, but delighted with that result

Spirits must be high, and whilst it's a very busy few days, same for all teams

Managing expectations comes into it now. Much better chance of doing that with Taylor & Done on board, but credit to JM. Something just feels right this season

You missed a good one! A genuinely outstanding performance with complete control from start to finish. I’m not exaggerating when I say it could’ve been double figures if not for some outstanding saves from Shelvey. I couldn’t choose a MOM if I tried as everyone was excellent.

One thing that stands out to me as a big difference between this season and last is the substitutes. Last season there was a very real feeling that our substitutes made us worse, epitomised in that Southend capitulation where every sub was terrible. This season, so far, every substitute appearance we’ve seen has been fantastic and only added to our performance.

We are becoming Arsenal-esque with how dangerous we are at corners now. That combined with a focus on attacking sides to force such situations will stand us in good stead.

As others have said, our subs have all been great so far. Lifting the levels in the game as McBride and Allarakhia did tonight. Amantchi too gave Gateshead plenty of problems during his time on the pitch.

Another impressive display all round.

East my man of the match tonight, but agree it could have gone to many a player.

No threat in defence, plenty to show in attack.

Half-time was a bit disappointed it wasn’t more, as cross after cross went straight to their keeper.
Second half was just a case of when, rather than if the 3rd would come.

Echo the comment above, where Gateshead were 2 years ago when we couldn’t get a touch of the ball. Very different team tonight.

Great for McBride after a long injury to smack the last one in.

Seriously impressive performance from start to finish. Mani D looks like the complete striker and its so obvious looking at last season to this how much better we are with a target man/finisher.
The squad depth looks very impressive - we look like the real deal even at this very early stage.

Couldn't agree more. One of our best performances since the Hilly years and it certainly was thrilling entertainment and a complete performance. They could have had a few themselves, but it's no exaggeration to say we could have added another dozen.

For me Rodders for motm. He is so fit and strong this year. Makes you realise what we were missing out on and what a great extension we secured. Pritchard also stood out as pure class but there wasn't a bad player on the pitch for us.

The differences in style between this campaign and the last are stark. We are nearly always looking to pass and drive forwards, the neat little nick and turns followed by leaving a defender for dead are a delight and we are shooting at will and queueing up to do so.

It's early days, but we seem to have the right squad and management team to have a genuine tilt at promotion this year. Granted Gateshead we're nowhere near the team Alty were but we despatched them with ease, comprehensively and professionally.

Making the round trip to Spotland has been a chore on many occasions recently. This season I'm genuinely looking forward to every game.

Aye. MacBride and the curse of the former player.... Even the Gateshead fans were cheering that goal.
That was as good a performance as I have seen in a long, long time.
I can't wait to see Amantchi fully unleashed. To have two tall players in a Dale squad is unheard of. But two who can actually play??!! Wow!

Absolutely brilliant tonight!

I've been a McNulty critic but that tonight was first class, we bullied Gateshead right from the off!

Another name thrown into the motm mix Aiden Barlow.

Yes, Barlow is absolute quality and he didnt half put a shift in. Gilmore waa also superb. That's the best alround performance i've seen since McNulty became manager and it was reminiscent of some of the stuff we played under Hill first time around. They set the benchmark tonight.

Barlow was immense. What an enjoyable game of total football. We certainly footballed Gateshead to death. But they didn't give up even at 4 nil. Our young keeper didn't put a foot wrong and earned his clean sheet when their man was through.

As others have said, the depth of the squad is very exciting.

This is the type of footie that the fans at San Spottie have been crying out for for years....even McNulty must see the resurgence in the fans appreciation of what the players are now providing. The Epiphany is complete.

Just keep going, further challenges lie ahead but tonight we are happy.

Watching that game was an absolute pleasure. The teamwork, skill, the forward looking initiatives, no aimless tippy tappy, and most obviously the desire to win that game from all our players gained the result they deserved. One hell of a benchmark to set for the remaining games. Be it new players, new backroom staff or lessons learned, Jim has achieved a standard I never expected he would.
Jim said once that he wanted to send fans home happy. The smiles on the terraces during and after the game spoke volumes. Thank you.
MOTM: Unsung hero Kyron Gordon. We have one hell of a player there.
We don't look at league tables, do we?

Can only echo everything commented on above.
How to pick a man of the match tonight!? So many candidates!
I could throw Gordon’s name in the mix as well as all the other players mentioned previously on this thread.
He’s a Rolls Royce of a footballer and must be a nightmare for an opponent to track back with; he just seems to pass and then find space effortlessly for a return ball.
It could have been 4-0 at halftime quite easily and double that the end.
Barlow is just a box of tricks, tireless in his running and probing.
And Rodney is so adept on turning a man with his first touch, they couldn’t cope with him in that first 40 minutes.
Any qualms about Whatmuff’s physicality were banished with that brave save late on and he wasn’t shy about joining in the late melee!
My only worry is that we may lose him during the international break because he must be on the FA’s radar for youth international honours.
We even saw East surging forward with the ball!
Perhaps we shouldn’t get too giddy about tonight’s sensational performance. There will be sterner tests and opponents down the line. There is a new element of steel in Dale’s makeup this season though so plenty to look forward to.
Just nice to savour it all though and bask in the knowledge that we have a team to be proud of again.

This was the performance we have been working towards for the last 2 seasons. There have been glimpses and false starts but tonight was the night the club turned a corner and has begun its resurgence. Suddenly it has clicked, there is a confidence, a touch of arrogance, a belief. It was palpable, you could almost taste it, this is a TEAM, all for one, one for all...
From boardroom to pitch the atmosphere has changed, we have a spring in our step that many supporters will never have felt before....players who have become a team, management with a clear remit and the execution of it and a board with a plan and the determination to implement it. Tonight felt like lift off, the start of something big...tell your mates to get to Spotland on Monday and be part of it... the Dale train is leaving the station, its time to get on board.......

Gateshead looked bereft of any structure ,ideas or confidence.

Dale didn’t need to get out of third gear to overwhelm them for most of the game.

Rodney outstanding dropping deep at times to receive ball turn and ease past opposition players.

Rotation of squad so far so good.

The only downer for the night was Joe Pritchard's injury. Hopefully it was nothing too serious as the only thing that could possibly ruin our progress this season would be any injuries to key players and he certainly looks like a great signing so far.

It was a brilliant performance and it shows that if we play to our full potential, with the squad we have, we can dominate games in the same mould as Barnet did last season. In that we dominated Gateshead and put them on the back foot from the first to the last minute of the game. The crucial thing is that we have a good squad in both numbers and quality, this season, that allows us to rotate the team to a degree.

Yes, we will have bad games and poor results that is the nature of football, but after three games, the signs are very good for this season, because the recruitment this season as been excellent by the Dale over the summer.

It did appear that Barlow may have picked up a slight knock as well - hopefully nothing of serious concern for either player.

Last night’s performance was exceptional and, for me, the most gratifying aspect was the display from the midfield duo, who dictated proceedings with authority throughout the full 90 minutes. In contrast to the previous two league fixtures, where we were perhaps a little sluggish in the opening phases, the intensity and control in the centre of the park were evident from the outset this time, even when having the ball played into them from the back (something that gave folk kittens last season).

Tactically, we’re not straying too far from the blueprint of last season. The key difference lies in the enhanced quality of personnel within the squad, which is allowing us to execute those familiar patterns with greater precision and consistency.

The patient build-up play, including lateral and backward passing, definitely remains a feature of our style - something I don’t mind in the slightest when it serves to dictate the tempo and probe for openings. Almost every goal kick in the second half was played short, for example. With the improved calibre of players, particularly in the No.9 role, we’re now far better equipped to capitalise on those moments when they arise.

Looking ahead to Saturday, Brackley could represent our first real test against a side likely to adopt a more defensive, perhaps even “park the bus” approach - though I hope that doesn’t unfairly undersell them. It will be intriguing to see how we go about unlocking that kind of opposition.

Encouraging signs all round - here’s hoping the momentum continues.
