Fair play to Stéphan for dropping Field. Field has been a big problem in our midfield. I know it's only two games since he's been left out but the difference is already quite dramatic.

Field has been an important player for us over the years and deserves more respect than that.

Last season every time Field didn't play we looked absolutely sunk.

We've won two games Vs promoted sides. Id rather win than lose, but bit early to be writing obituaries

His cover for our CBs has saved us many times. He is very good at that.

Field hasn't been the problem. Thinking we were Pep's Barcelona has been the problem. We've gone a bit more direct and stopped fu*king around with it at the back and that's what has led to better results. Its as simple as that. Sam still has a big part to play in this team in my opinion.

We won’t be playing league one upstarts every week and at some point, probably starting next week, we’ll need defensive central midfielders.

What you can say is we’ve moved on a lot if Field and Chair aren’t the first picks week in week out.

We did this with Dunne early last season and he won POTY.

As Robith says, too early.

Without Sam turning up week in week out we’d have gone down in his time here.
He’ll be back . Long season ahead.

Think it is very disrespectful from the OP.

Field has been a key player over three or four seasons now and has popped up with vital goals and brilliant defensive blocks over several seasons

The style today has meant others have been selected from the start and its worked for two matches, but yes they have both been against league one teams of last season amd it is only two games and not the four seasons that Field has been an extremely important cog in our machine.

Even today, he has performed a role with Hayden also to shore things up for the win.

Even if he is just a bench ootion for certain games, he will still inpact this season.

But saying he has been the big problem in the midfield. He has been our most consistent player here for seasons. Ridiculous to suggest this sir. Its more been the fact of players around him over the years that not been up to scratch.

Very harsh words indeed.

Don’t think anyone really gets dropped nowadays, squad rotation is such a key part of the modern game.
If it was the playoff final, he’d be in the team and deservedly so.

Ridiculous and disrespectful to one of our most consistent players over last 5 years.

The midfield was largely irrelevant ystd. Wrexham completely bypassed the midfield most of the game bu just playing long over and over again

While we weren’t as bad on our side, it was also much more direct with us playing balls behind to burrell

It was essentially their attacking players vs our back 4 and vice Versa

If madsen or varane had been very impactful I could’ve entertained the discussion- but you’ve just isolated one variable and claimed there’s a cause effect

I honestly think you could have reframed this displaying more respect for a man that has regularly put a shift in when countless others haven’t.

Agreed it's the change of style that has got us the results it's got nothing to do with Field who has been excellent for us over the last few seasons. Stephan picked Varane to play the 6 roll yesterday it could just as easily have been Sam's job, we've finally built something resembling a squad.

There's reasons why the club want Varane to play plenty of games this year, if he's playing well and the club are reasonably successful it will increase his profile and in turn his transfer value, he is presumably one of the players destined to be sold and sitting on the bench will not add value, sadly unless things change dramatically we are a selling club.

Sam Field has been a major factor in why we've avoided relegation over the last few seasons, he's been at times doing the job of two people when our midfield options have been very limited. Fortunately CN has learnt some lessons from last season and his previous Summers recruitment, we have recruited much better this Summer and it has given JS better options for selection and hopefully he will mix up the playing style because playing out from the back continually was like a death of a thousand cuts.

If you look at the squad now, it looks like we have two players for every position .
Look who didn’t start yesterday. Chair , Smith, Dembele , Hayden , Jake , Poku , Sam and Frey .
All these players can come in and do the same job as the players they’re replacing.
Now , I’m not saying these players are world beaters but it looks like we’ve finally got a decent squad for the first time in years. This isn’t a relegation squad but it’s capable of top ten .

This 100% Maybe we will be more proactive without Field in the middle of the park but he has been the mainstay of our midfield over the past few years

Posters should not under value the contribution that Field has made since he has been here.....he has been totally committed which is more than I can say for many.

Field still has a big part to play in this team of players.

I am with the replies on here referring to Sam Field's time at the club, but his pre-season and early season I am with the OP; he has been well off the pace and out of sorts, simply not himself.

There will be games where we need him, but maybe the change to a more "pragmatic" style bypassing the midfield gives a Madsen - Varane combo more of a chance. Time will tell, but taking him out has proven to be the right thing to do at this stage...

Can we go out yet?

He's played pretty much every game for us for the past three and a half seasons, couldn't blame him if he was a bit mentally fatigued and needed some time out of the starting XI.

Poll: And it's hi ho

Unfortunately for some the OP speaks the truth.

Regardless of how the game is played, either long ball or Guardiola ball, you still need a CM who can pass the fckin ball.
In the 90s, under Gerry, we were pretty direct with fast wingers and Les upfront, but you still needed a creative player which we had in Wilkins.
Today, I see similarities in how we have played in the past couple of games to that early 90s period, but we still need someone who can pass in CM.
Field has been dropped, Madsen is in, and I don't see Field playing as a starter that often.

I expect Dunne to be next as he looks to be really struggling under Stephan. I like Morgan at RB.

Poll: How is Nourry cooking so far ? 🤣

Unless JCS does come back and stay fit I won't be surprised to see Field slotting in at left sided CB.

TBF I think Field has looked really good when he's been asked to play at the back. I think the position suits him better!

Echo this. I see Kieran slowly being grown into that spot. That said he could also get Madsens spot.

Another thought, Field could get moved as a valuable player in someone else’s eyes. If he is to be behind Varane, Hayden, Nico, Morgan then he could help balance books.
