When I first starting attending it was quite common to applaud an opposition goal - just a few quiet claps. Of course they were more sedate and decorous times. I'd be there wearing my cravat and a Piccadilly window in me eye.

Picadilly window.
I like that.

Mid 2000s, I think, Swansea are putting in one of those 'lucky to get nil' performances in the fizzy pop Cup, and we are coasting,
Kenny Jackett had always been popular at QPR, so with as much sympathy as irony, we begin 'ole'-ing every time Swansea manage a successful pass.
Bored and frustrated Swansea fans catch on and start to return the gesture for the rather more competent Hoops interplay.
These cup games are rarely well-attended, but two sets of fans lustily cheering on each others' teams is certainly something you don't see every day....
Can anyone else confirm my recollection...?

When Roy Wegerle scored that outrageous goal at Leeds there was a lot of applause from the home fans, and rightly so.
From my own point of view I remember applauding an excellent goal by David Platt for Villa at LR. That's probably the only time I remember doing it though.
A beautiful strike that one.

Remember quite a few people applauding Rotherham's goal when we beat them 5-1 under Holloway - cracking strike, odd reaction to a goal that brought it back to 1-1 but they were so awful otherwise felt like the overriding feeling for everyone was we'd go onto win regardless
I remember my dad and I applauding a sensational Brian Robson goal against us by Man U at Loftus Road many years ago. I also remember the bloke behind us giving us an earful for doing so. But a brilliant goal is a brilliant goal.
I also remember all 4 sides of Elland Road applauding that Wegerle goal. It was surreal but kind of brilliant as it was just two sets of football fans admiring an incredible goal.

Blackpool took a lap of honour at our place after the second replay in 1990.
Always had a soft spot for Blackpool after that epic tie; notably more attacking than Arsenal in the previous round.
He didn't score, but I remember being massively impressed with Alan Wright and vaguely followed his later career.
One thing I really miss is quite liking occasional opposition players and being pleased if they got an England cap and were therefore in "my" team for at least that match. I've now lost all interest in any Premier League players and assume they're all overpaid dicks unless they are ex-Rs.

There's quite a lot of applause from behind the goal for both of Gareth Ainsworth's goals at Rushden & Diamonds all those years back.
As well as the goalie Billy Turley screaming at his centre back Barry Hunter after the first, which as Ian Holloway rightly pointed out is hilarious, what did he expect him to do?!
your right. a good few clapped behind that goal..... especially his first goal...
Thought at the time, he was total class. Probably under achieved given his talent.
I wasnt at the Leeds away game when Wegerle scored. But could tell many Leeds fans were applauding. High praise indeed from their ever so friendly fan base !!

Yes did applaud Platt too.

I'm not sure he did underachieve, Numpty?
I see your point in one way, especially when it comes to Italy, but...not sure...
I'd love if 'It Was What It Was' did a podcast on Platt's time in Italy. Four years, one Coppa, one Uefa is serious going, but Bari was a strange move for a player that talented. Maybe a year wasted. And Juve might have been an overreach in the second season. But he was a roaring success at Sampa.
27 goals in 62 caps, 180 goals in 550 games, that's a great record.
Though he was a great reader of the game, moved really well, had fine technique, he wasn't incredibly fast, he wasn't tall, and he fought his way from rejection by Man U and the Fourth Division to a superb, consistent, elite level....I think there's a case to be made that (maybe a poor career choice or two apart) Platt got the very most out of his circumstances and talents.

Fair enough Brian.
When i said under achieving, i felt he had the potential to be world class, and he was a rung or two below that, for me.
Wasnt one for the limelight, so the likes of Gascoigne took all the headlines and Platt just went about his merry way.
The goal for England against Belgium in last minute of extra time in the knock out stages of the world cup, had more to do with Platts swivel and turn and hit over his shoulder into the roof of the net, than the delivery from Gascoigne. A defining moment for David Platt, though, no doubt.

That's also the only opposition goal I ever clapped. I was sitting in the upper loft and had an excellent view of it. I seem to recall he bowed to the fans.

Good call!
I'd forgotten that, he bowed to The Loft after he was applauded, I think.

Yep it was a night game I think and the whole stadium applauded that excellent Platt goal, including me.

That Cole Hatrick always sticks in my memory. I think it was his first when they got a free kick and the ball went in to the lower loft where I used to sit all those years ago.
Some kid had the ball and would not throw it back in when Cole came to collect the ball. The kid balanced it on the wall until Cole got to him then he threw the ball over Cole’s head back on to the pitch. Cole stood there and clapped him sarcastically and the lower loft tore in to Cole. I genuinely thought at that moment, we will pay for that - and 1min later Cole smashes the free kick in to the back of the net and then scores 3.
