Genuinely don't understand how the outcome was a drop ball? What did the ref stop the game for if it wasn't a foul? There was no head injury involved? The only reason to stop would be if he thought Pearson was badly injured, which presumably could only happen if Mbengue had played him and not the ball. Baffling bit of refereeing.
Probably a yellow but could easily be a red. I got the impression that everyone at the game kind of groaned and held their breath when it happened? He's definitely getting sent off at least once this season.

Is one of them tackles that looks like normal football contact in real time but looks like GBH when analysed frame-by-frame. I do like idea of ref doing nothing if they're not sure - too many refs use the decibel level of the player's scream as their yardstick nowadays instead of assessing what they saw.

I thought the ref got it spot on. 50/50 challenge, studs not raised the ball was there to be won. Ben Pearsons reaction was over the top and he tried to get Mbengue sent off. Fair play to the ref, he was close to the action and seemed to reassure Jimmy Dunne straight away of the outcome.

Some definite nervousness from Tyler and Cookie on comms who I think both initially felt that it might be a red but a yellow was probably the more sensible option. Seemed to go on for ages before the drop ball was finally given
I didn't think it was a red card, and probably not a foul. The build up was the worry, as it was the heavy first touch and lunge to amend, so he was a little out of control and could have been deemed to be a little reckless, but the connection was actually with the ball and not studs up, so I didn't think it was a foul, and any punishment would have been a little harsh. I would have probably accepted a yellow, just because to the nature of the tackle and the other players reaction.. but think looking at the replays the ref was probably spot on.

I think the keeper was caught by his own defenders foot. Interesting to see it again, didn't think Burrell made any contact. I think there was a slight fowl a few seconds earlier by Burrell, which the ref let go.

It was the definition of a 50/50 both players went in hard both connected solidly with the ball and inevitably one caught the other in momentum, the freeze frame photo looks awful, but does not tell the story. Ref was absolutely right to stop the game as it could have been a bad injury.

Got to say I thought the ref was useless most of the day. Mbengue booked for no worse than a 50/50 challenge at almost exactly the same spot in our half as Koki was haviong his hirt torn off earlier. Stop play for an incidentb wheee we are in possession because their goalie and defender lie down holding their heads and jump up nthe minute the free is awarded. Might have spotted that would be the case if he'd been watching the incident. Dunne's booking. Burrell's booking. Three additional minutes in the first half that had to be closer to ten. Spent most of the day wandering about like he was happy to be there.
Useless.

Is it me, or was Steve Cook with the coaches rather than the players today? Sure he was shadowing Kevin Betsy on the bench. Maybe doing his badges or something.
The game got quite testy at times and I was impressed how we stood up to the physical challenge of the game and the players handled it well when the Stoke players tried to wind them up. Their number 9 was handled well by Mbengue and he got taken off as he was getting wound up. Good to see us the match the more physical sides.

I thought he was out of control and he did catch him, at that point it's a gamble whether the ref decides on a red or yellow normally, so was surprised at no booking at all but won't argue.
Assume the fact he gave a free kick means they can't do any retrospective action?

Steve Cook commented that kind of reaction was part of Stoke's DNA and had been for years. He's not altogether objective of course, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I thought it was wild, but just felt it wasn't intentional (who knows?) A yellow, maybe, as studs were down?
But Pearson's tackle afterwards that he got booked for was a a red. Absolutely lethal challenge.
The way I judge these things - rightly or wrongly - is 'what if that happened if I was playing?'. I'd have wanted Pearson off, 100%. Mbengue...not so sure....

Their keeper was pathetic, faking an injury to try to get our lad sent off. Funny how Stoke had NO ‘injuries’ after we scored though……
