Quarshie also made a very strong case for himself last night.

But we know how these things work.

Jack Stephens will have to play.

Does make one wonder how morale is in the camp.

Agree and this is where we see how much Still can do and if he is in charge

One thing the Ginger Monotoned Man has to do is find a settled defensive 3/4/5 whatever formation he decides on and stick with it.
Chopping and changing weekly is no good.

And surely after D Downes last 2 games Ross Stewart has to start on Saturday.

All eyes on the team news at 13:45 on Saturday.
Has Ralph’s bingo machine reappeared with the squad numbers in ready to roll?
Or will the manager finally show us HIS preferred team?

We thought that we had the answers, It was the questions we had wrong.

Will Still made 9 changes from the team on Saturday, to give others a chance to stake a claim for starting. Nearly all of last nights team made a difference and put in a good shift.

It would be really disappointing if Still ignores this and reverts back to the players that have been very average or still playing 'Rusty ball' so far this season. It would also raise the question why so many changes if he has no intention of playing any of those that played well last night, other than to give them a rest ?

Ross Stewart's reputation grows in every game he doesn't play in, purely by virtue of him not being Downs or Archer.

I think all of the defence that started last night should start on Saturday including McCarthy (despite his mistake).
That looked the most committed & organised back line we've had for a while.

All 4 of these players started against Norwich away in the cup when we won 3 nil . Our best performance of the season against an admittedly weakened Norwich team.

Sorry...take out Mads from that team and replace with Jelert.

Agreed.

Jelert looks a lot more solid than Roerslev.

You could play Fellows in front of him and not need Fellows to do too much defensive work, whereas Roerslev is a liability defensively, and Fellows would spend half his time having to cover for him.

Does make you wonder why we let Bree go and spunked £5 million on Roerslev.

I note Bree set up Charlton's winner at Bramall Lane on Saturday.

The only goal he scored in 2½ years has reached almost mythical proportions now. As for the long-term injuries which severely restrict any attempts to run or jump on those fragile, matchstick legs of his, they've all magically disappeared.

A lot of praise for Quarshie generally but I still worry about his distribution and awareness of his surroundings
Yes he was solid when attacked and probably better that THB, but dare I say he could also be partially blamed for that first goal?
Yes Mac made a blatant error but Q was completely unaware of Chiesa up his arris to nip in front which is not the first time that has happened

Absolutely.
If Stephens is back in there for the next game, we'll know Still is not in charge.
It went a bit quiet regarding Stephens, but last night showed what defence should look like, Stephens has been getting away with it for far too long.
Quarshie looked composed and strong as did Wood.
Please no more Stephens or THB.

I think on balance, I would take Quarshie's distribution issues if he can actually defend.

Those goals we conceded at Hull on Saturday, I would like to think at least two of them wouldn't have happened if he was playing.

His long throw could yet come in handy as well.

It was noticeable at the Fans' Forum (which Still missed, in fairness) that Spors seemed to take on an almost creepily personal responsibility for the decision to give Stephens the new 3-year contract.

I would however be surprised if Still was being told who to pick.

I can see us reverting again on Saturday to a 3-man CB line-up which includes Stephens. Whether that is being done just to accommodate him only Still will know. But 30,000 others will have a pretty good idea.....

Sorry but Stephens hasn’t let us down so far this season yet still all this hatred towards him

THB has been dreadful, and was most of last season yet seems immune from criticism

This is true,I would prefer Jack not to play, but it is THB who had been shockingly bad for about a year now. All 3 last night plus Jellert looked way better than any previous combinations.

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

The most worrying thing for me is that we see a performance like that and we see Wood, Jelert etc, playing much better than the people in our usual starting XI...so why have we played that starting XI so often? I feel it is unlikely these players just all of a sudden became good overnight. So, is Still playing mates, or is it possible he is under orders to play certain people? Either way it does not bode well.

I think Slack Jack being Club & Team Captain is that he assists & has a say in the team selection, hence he's always going to be first name on the team sheet.
There can be no other reason why every Manager we've had selects him when he's guilty of so many errors.
Come on WS be brave, freshen things up & give Wood & Edwards a run of games to prove themselves.

THB is the wild card here. I think the expectation of him leaving informed the purchase of Quarshie and Stephens extended contract as a club rather than first team captain. I suspect both THB and Stephens are very positive, strong personalities in training and bring Still support from last year's group. But their game confidence is totally shot after three completely different managerial approaches, all of which failed miserably. If Still is to succeed in cutting out the losing mentality and general fragility he needs to leave out THB, Stephens, Downes, Aribo, and maybe Manning, Archer and Armstrong until we start to win again. Easier said than done but he now has alternatives who could do well if given a run of games to improve.

It's not hatred, it's just so obvious after the Liverpool game how much quicker and improved the defence is without him, he's still playing for his best mate Stubborn Boy.

The defence has been a problem since the days of Fonte and Van Dyke.
A solid and stable defensive pairing, with good back ups and a goalie that takes charge of his area.
Those are the fundamental from which the team is built.
If you don’t concede you don’t lose. Looking forward to the day.
Combine that with creative and forward looking midfielders along with hungry, mobile and predatory strikers.
Now that would be something to savour, by crikey .
I hope the SR big shits read this forum, they could learn a lot.
