Madsen and Varane are not mobile and are easy to play around. They don't win many second balls. Varane can be sloppy and gets caught in possession to often. Madsen is always available when we are in possession, and can play a nice pass forward, so he does offer a little more. So I feel we need a more mobile and dynamic pairing with energy. |  | | |

To be fair to him, Madsen recycled it fine today, and has been playing well. He maybe wasn’t at his best, but he’s was fine and not the issue today.
Varane was very poor today, and has been poor for a while now, but he’s got away with it given how others around, ahead, and behind him, have been playing. He should be dropped, albeit we’ll all disagree about who replaces him.
All that said, he wasn’t why we failed to get any points today. That was down to the quality of our delivery into the box (crosses, set pieces, balls into feet). We had so much possession in and around the box, and our final ball was terrible repeatedly. |  | | |

Madsen continues to make me eat my words. Nowhere near his best game today but I saw him running around and using his body against Miwarl players….. I mean, did you notice Luongo at all before he went off? First 25 we totally dominated them.
Varanne will be a great player.
Poor game today granted. My only criticism of him is he doesn’t shoot on site enough and I do wish our players would have more pops at goal around the box.
Funny how that duo was good enough to get us to sixth but after one narrow, frustrating and (IMHO) unjust defeat they need canning. Okay, they ain’t Viera and Petit, but they’ll do for me and I’m Chairman of The Sam Field Appreciation Club

I don't think Varane will end up being a great player as he is extremely limited. I'm surprised the club didn't bank the £5m offer over the summer as I'm not sure he has any improvement left in him. I'd still have him over Sam Field any day mind.
Madsen? Love him. Technically the best player in the team and now working hard. If he gets injured there is no one in the squad who can pass forward in CM.

I believe that Varane will be dropped for the Swansea game, Field to replace him ahead of Hayden hopefully .......I think the Manager or whoever picks the team or decides is fit enough to start need to look at themselves for not selecting Saiko & Burrell & Mbengue to start yesterday. Think Vale & Frey will be left out as well and Morrison injured so will not play.
As for Madsen, wasn't on the ball enough yesterday, not as good as he has been but many of the players were slightly 'off' yesterday.

Varane for me is an average player at best and as said before in this thread gets caught too many times dithering about where to play the ball to. Too many bad decisions and too often needs to turn back, it was his mistake that almost led to a first goal for Millwall, and he had Nardi to thank for an outstanding save from Smallbone. A poor attempt at a headed clearance led to their second goal. If someone wants to pay £5million in January I’d snap their hand off. Field back as a defensive midfielder to accompany Madsen, who I thought controlled the game yesterday is a far better option with Hayden as a back up.
Overall though I thought we played well yesterday, with a bit more luck and a better final ball we would have won at a canter. Also given that we had players coming back from all corners of the globe didn’t help as once Burrell and Saito came on we stepped up a few gears and could/should have got a point as a minimum. Hopefully a full squad to select from for the Swansea and Derby games. | |
