Madsen and Varane 21:39 - Oct 18 with 4064 views | stainrods_elbow | Not good enough today, and not likely to be good enough this season. I would sell Varane in January, while Madsen for me, small renaissance notwithstanding, is a squad player at best. Discuss.

Madsen and Varane on 21:58 - Oct 18 with 2587 views | rangersroar | Madsen and Varane are not mobile and are easy to play around. They don't win many second balls. Varane can be sloppy and gets caught in possession to often. Madsen is always available when we are in possession, and can play a nice pass forward, so he does offer a little more. So I feel we need a more mobile and dynamic pairing with energy.
Madsen and Varane on 22:13 - Oct 18 with 2517 views | JamesB1979 | Really like Varane. Think he’s got loads of potential and when he’s on it, we are a different side. Today was a day when we needed him to step up and he didn’t. And we lost. He needs a break from the first team.
Madsen and Varane on 22:15 - Oct 18 with 2500 views | Hunterhoop | To be fair to him, Madsen recycled it fine today, and has been playing well. He maybe wasn’t at his best, but he’s was fine and not the issue today. Varane was very poor today, and has been poor for a while now, but he’s got away with it given how others around, ahead, and behind him, have been playing. He should be dropped, albeit we’ll all disagree about who replaces him. All that said, he wasn’t why we failed to get any points today. That was down to the quality of our delivery into the box (crosses, set pieces, balls into feet). We had so much possession in and around the box, and our final ball was terrible repeatedly.

Why does he need a break? He needs to just play better next game.

If he’s out of the side, I hope he shows some fight to get back in. You can’t stay in side after that performance

I was going to say it's a moot point, but that's not quite the right phrase. I guess the question is, if a player is struggling do you drop him and he fights for his place or hope he plays his way back to form ? That's why JS is a football manager and I was a pox doctor's clerk. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Sorry, James, it was the 'needs a break' comment I was questioning. He doesn't. He just needs to play better. That's what coaches are for. I'm not yet convinced that we have a squad that can cover for players who need a break.

Madsen and Varane on 22:46 - Oct 18 with 2306 views | Lblock | Quite a successful fishing expedition so far. For me, totally farcical statement that’s being “asked” Madsen continues to make me eat my words. Nowhere near his best game today but I saw him running around and using his body against Miwarl players….. I mean, did you notice Luongo at all before he went off? First 25 we totally dominated them. Varanne will be a great player. Poor game today granted. My only criticism of him is he doesn’t shoot on site enough and I do wish our players would have more pops at goal around the box. Funny how that duo was good enough to get us to sixth but after one narrow, frustrating and (IMHO) unjust defeat they need canning. Okay, they ain’t Viera and Petit, but they’ll do for me and I’m Chairman of The Sam Field Appreciation Club Bites!!!

He does. But he needs a kick up the backside. So, dropping him might do that.

I don't think Varane will end up being a great player as he is extremely limited. I'm surprised the club didn't bank the £5m offer over the summer as I'm not sure he has any improvement left in him. I'd still have him over Sam Field any day mind. Madsen? Love him. Technically the best player in the team and now working hard. If he gets injured there is no one in the squad who can pass forward in CM. A decent CM pairing for this season.

Madsen and Varane on 07:29 - Oct 19 with 1778 views | Wegerles_Stairs | Varane is a strange one as he has the tools to dominate matches but then plays like he did yesterday. Is he being told to turn back every time he gets the ball? I'd love to see him playing with his head up and looking forward when he gets the ball in a non-dangerous position. It's fair comment to mention Field who is out in the cold now and certainly couldn't have done less than Varane yesterday.

We have Field and Hayden: one of those should replace Varane on Wednesday. Similarly I would expect Vale to lose his place on Wednesday as well. We have the strongest squad we’ve had for years: if you play badly you should expect to drop out the team and another player gets the chance to impress.

Exactly. I think Hayden for Varane. Keep Madsen. Then Burrell, Saito and maybe even Poku to start. At the back Mbengue and Esqerdinha to come in.
Madsen and Varane on 08:30 - Oct 19 with 1587 views | gazza1 | I believe that Varane will be dropped for the Swansea game, Field to replace him ahead of Hayden hopefully .......I think the Manager or whoever picks the team or decides is fit enough to start need to look at themselves for not selecting Saiko & Burrell & Mbengue to start yesterday. Think Vale & Frey will be left out as well and Morrison injured so will not play. As for Madsen, wasn't on the ball enough yesterday, not as good as he has been but many of the players were slightly 'off' yesterday. Saying that I think we did enough to get. something from the game but you cannot give the opposition two goals start......and I thought Nardi was not at fault for the first goal, poor defending by several defensive players.
Madsen and Varane on 08:44 - Oct 19 with 1526 views | stevec | Varane had a poor game but we lost because we wasted 60 minutes with Frey up top, a goalkeeping error of some magnitude and slow centre backs.
Madsen and Varane on 08:53 - Oct 19 with 1499 views | DWQPR | Varane for me is an average player at best and as said before in this thread gets caught too many times dithering about where to play the ball to. Too many bad decisions and too often needs to turn back, it was his mistake that almost led to a first goal for Millwall, and he had Nardi to thank for an outstanding save from Smallbone. A poor attempt at a headed clearance led to their second goal. If someone wants to pay £5million in January I’d snap their hand off. Field back as a defensive midfielder to accompany Madsen, who I thought controlled the game yesterday is a far better option with Hayden as a back up. Overall though I thought we played well yesterday, with a bit more luck and a better final ball we would have won at a canter. Also given that we had players coming back from all corners of the globe didn’t help as once Burrell and Saito came on we stepped up a few gears and could/should have got a point as a minimum. Hopefully a full squad to select from for the Swansea and Derby games.

Proper sloppy defending, I am very undecided if the keeper should have done better but I am 100% sure three, at least, defending players should have done a lot, lot better.

Thankfully it's not only me, Varane flatters to deceive and I keep thinking he's being selected in front of Field and Hayden to hopefully increase his transfer value. Well it's not working we should have taken the money in the Summer, both Field and Hayden can do a better job as a defensive midfield player.
Madsen and Varane on 09:22 - Oct 19 with 1370 views | Paddyhoops | Madsen was fine yesterday. Won tackles and headers which last year he never did. I think he’s been one our best players . Varane not so much. Gave the ball away a lot but he’ll improve . Alex Niell openly admitted they probably got away with that win yesterday so I’ll take that as compliment.

He is being selected ahead of Field & Hayden because neither Field or Hayden have been playing well.....hence Varane is selected and he is, perhaps, the future.
