Great result yesterday against Sunderland. Credit to the players, the staff, and especially the 1000 or so amazing fans who made the trip – that kind of support, in a game with nothing riding on it, speaks volumes.

I’ve been reflecting over my morning coffee and just wanted to share a few thoughts. I know not everyone will agree, but hopefully it comes across in the spirit it’s meant – as a long-time fan trying to see the full picture.

Marti deserves credit for keeping us up last season – he did the job he was brought in to do. But this season, we saw many of the same problems. We started with tactics that didn’t suit the squad – too passive, too deep, no real cutting edge. The players looked unsure of their roles and lacking confidence. When we eventually changed approach, results picked up – but it took too long, and the early damage was done.

From what I’ve heard, he wasn’t well-liked behind the scenes either. Stubborn, slow to adapt, quick to deflect when things went wrong – and very happy to take the praise when they didn’t. He’s clearly a good coach, but I don’t think he was ever truly the right fit for this club. I won’t miss the terrace songs.

On the other hand, I think Christian Nourry deserves more credit than he gets. He’s only 28, but age doesn’t define ability. He inherited a tough job – tight FFP limits, a small budget, and a club that’s been firefighting for years. And yet, recruitment has clearly improved. Not every signing will be an instant success, but all have contributed, and a few could add real long-term value – which is crucial for us as a selling club. They’ll take time to adapt, but there’s a shift in thinking, and that’s progress.

The Ben Williams situation clearly had an impact – he was offered a big opportunity abroad and took it, which is understandable. But the void it left in the football department was felt. That said, I’ve heard that’s now been addressed for next season, which is good news.

Of course, there’s a lot to do this summer. We need a head coach who suits the group, a more consistent playing style, and a couple of clever additions. But I genuinely feel more hopeful than I have in a while. There’s a bit of stability creeping in, and for once, it feels like we’re not just lurching from one short-term fix to the next.

One thing we do need to change though – the way we treat some of our players. Madsen’s taken stick all season, often when he’s done little wrong. Now it’s Dembele. It’s like we always need someone to have a go at. These lads are human. They need support, not abuse. Confidence matters.

Anyway, that’s just my view – take it or leave it. I’m not pretending everything’s perfect, but I do think there are a few more reasons for quiet optimism than people give credit for.

Thanks again to Clive – this board remains a brilliant space, even when we don’t all agree. Have a great summer everyone – and here’s to next season, hopefully with a new head coach who can take us forward on this mad old rollercoaster we all insist on riding.

So, where does the inside info come from?
What are the developments in the physio/sports science area?

I don't know if I need a summer break, but reading stuff like this makes me question my own sanity. I think the opposite of literally everything you say.

Apart from bizarrely, as a fan, appearing to rate some inexperienced behind-the-scenes guy above the most charismatic and inspiring manager we've had in a decade - to say that you won't miss the Marti song is perhaps strangely the most odd thing. It's a good song, it got us singing and I think whatever the merits or otherwise of Marti it did everyone a power of good to have us singing positive songs about QPR and the club for once rather than derogatory songs about other towns / fans etc. Something to rally behind, and I know it seems a trite thing to say, but I think that song had quite a lot of importance. And I say that having not liked it first time I heard it.

I will miss it, we will miss Marti and I fear once your man Nourry makes his next appointment you will discover why getting us to 15th with the deck of cards he had was actually some pretty fine work.

I'm sure you are not.

It's just so strange that at Loftus Road, in away ends, with friends, family...in the real world away from the faceless anonymity - you are more likely to find someone with John Terry on the back of their shirt then hear views claiming that Nourry is the man and Marti was the devil incarnate.

Like I said above, I need a break from all this. I have no idea what or who to believe any more, or even if I have any idea that what I think is correct.

Laughed when I read "There’s a bit of stability creeping in".

Sorry, Charlie, I agree with very little of what you've said. But that's ok too.

For someone with no connection to the club you have a remarkably detailed account of staff's experience, viewpoint and internal thoughts of Marti!

I'll agree with you on Dembele though. Scored a couple of cracking goals and a nice assist (plus what would have been assist of the season with outside of his boot to Ashby) recently but some seem keen to dig him out. Defensive side clearly needs work but his ability to produce quality is much needed around here.

Having no true connection to the club doesn’t stop remarkably detailed accounts of everything QPR related being posted as facts on here, especially if they are anti Nourry.

I’m all for a new or unifying song. We don’t have enough but It’s a shit song. Stereotypical and if Chelsea gave him a call he’s be down expressing his love for them in a flash.

Well of course, but it is quite hard to have a cerebral football song, you know. Plus if we could only sing about players and managers who wouldn't walk to a top Premier League club if asked, we would be singing about......erm no-one.

Sure Ned. I'm not planning to get in to the Marti V Nourry stuff particularly. That's been (and will be plenty more) done to death.

Just saying things like this -
"From what I’ve heard, he wasn’t well-liked behind the scenes either. Stubborn, slow to adapt, quick to deflect when things went wrong – and very happy to take the praise when they didn’t."
Would surely indicate that the poster has an inside link or two.

These players aren’t children. They’re men in their 20s. If they woefully underperform to the extent Madsen and Dembele have at times then it’s perfectly fine they’ll cop some flak at football matches. It’s great Madsen has shown some potential recently. It’s great Dembele has shown glimpses amongst the 90% soft as sht performances but we can still call it as it is without worrying about hurting their feelings. As a group of fans down the years we’ve been remarkably tolerant and accepting relative to the dross we’ve been served. That we finished comfortably clear of relegation is a damning indictment on the other teams rather than any achievement of the current manager/players. It’s mostly been pathetic, soft, weak and any other adjectives of your choice.

Whoever is managing whichever players are here in August has a hell of a job on.

Fair enough to call out poor performances — no one’s denying Madsen and Dembele have had some bad games. But constant scapegoating doesn’t help either. Confidence matters, even for professionals.

Criticism’s part of the game, but we’ve got a habit of turning frustration into abuse, and that doesn’t get more out of players. We all want better, but support plays a role too — especially in a squad this thin.

Whoever takes over has a big job, no doubt. Let’s not make it harder.

One thing I didn’t like about the Marti song was it said “hates effing Chelsea” instead of “effing hates Chelsea”. It sounded like he was being to forced to have intercourse with a lady named Chelsea and he really didn’t like doing it.

Other than that, I really liked the song. Better than any “current managers blue and white army” chant we usually have.

Fun peek behind the looking glass, the past 6-8 weeks people seen as pro-Cifuentes have been receiving PMs from new posters with almost identical wording to the original post, claiming that Cifuentes was hard work, a bit of a dick, actually not very good and disliked behind the scenes and that Nourry had the patience of a saint for putting up with him and deserved more love.

A nearly identical article appeared in that bastion of journalism The Hounslow Herald this week.

Now it *could* all be an enormous coincidence of course that this thread popped up right after a nice end of season win…..

I don't know what happened first hand in the away end yesterday, not much I suspect, but regardless of the PR campaign this has all turned out rather nice for Nourry, hasn't it? From his point of view, the potential flashpoint of the Burnley home game straight after Marti dropping the hints about being wanted, etc, gets watered down nicely by a 1230 ko and a 0-5 thumping. Then instead of a 7-0 rudderless drubbing we get an unexpected win at Sunderland. I don't think he could have scripted it much better (bit like if he happened to be dictating some of the first-time contributors' posts on here).

It could, agreed. Or it could be part of the ongoing PR war.

I think we have to give individual posters the benefit of the doubt, though.

The away end definitely had an end of season feel to it yesterday with balloons, beach balls, large inflatable penises (if that's the plural of penis) and even an inflatable doll.

No idea how it would have gone if we had lost heavily - I expect the good atmosphere in the away end was helped by the early goal and the players looking committed and up for it.

Yes, we have to, even though it all seems rather odd. We can't just have any differing views from a new poster as an automatic assumption they are a stooge, or all debate dies.

It is hard to behave though. What's that stupid phrase about if it looks like a duck?
