Season perspectives 08:07 - May 4 with 34008 viewscharlieB

Great result yesterday against Sunderland. Credit to the players, the staff, and especially the 1000 or so amazing fans who made the trip – that kind of support, in a game with nothing riding on it, speaks volumes.

I’ve been reflecting over my morning coffee and just wanted to share a few thoughts. I know not everyone will agree, but hopefully it comes across in the spirit it’s meant – as a long-time fan trying to see the full picture.

Marti deserves credit for keeping us up last season – he did the job he was brought in to do. But this season, we saw many of the same problems. We started with tactics that didn’t suit the squad – too passive, too deep, no real cutting edge. The players looked unsure of their roles and lacking confidence. When we eventually changed approach, results picked up – but it took too long, and the early damage was done.

From what I’ve heard, he wasn’t well-liked behind the scenes either. Stubborn, slow to adapt, quick to deflect when things went wrong – and very happy to take the praise when they didn’t. He’s clearly a good coach, but I don’t think he was ever truly the right fit for this club. I won’t miss the terrace songs.

On the other hand, I think Christian Nourry deserves more credit than he gets. He’s only 28, but age doesn’t define ability. He inherited a tough job – tight FFP limits, a small budget, and a club that’s been firefighting for years. And yet, recruitment has clearly improved. Not every signing will be an instant success, but all have contributed, and a few could add real long-term value – which is crucial for us as a selling club. They’ll take time to adapt, but there’s a shift in thinking, and that’s progress.

The Ben Williams situation clearly had an impact – he was offered a big opportunity abroad and took it, which is understandable. But the void it left in the football department was felt. That said, I’ve heard that’s now been addressed for next season, which is good news.

Of course, there’s a lot to do this summer. We need a head coach who suits the group, a more consistent playing style, and a couple of clever additions. But I genuinely feel more hopeful than I have in a while. There’s a bit of stability creeping in, and for once, it feels like we’re not just lurching from one short-term fix to the next.

One thing we do need to change though – the way we treat some of our players. Madsen’s taken stick all season, often when he’s done little wrong. Now it’s Dembele. It’s like we always need someone to have a go at. These lads are human. They need support, not abuse. Confidence matters.

Anyway, that’s just my view – take it or leave it. I’m not pretending everything’s perfect, but I do think there are a few more reasons for quiet optimism than people give credit for.

Thanks again to Clive – this board remains a brilliant space, even when we don’t all agree. Have a great summer everyone – and here’s to next season, hopefully with a new head coach who can take us forward on this mad old rollercoaster we all insist on riding.

I said improved the squad, not completed it. Said with our budgets it will take time to get where we need to be.

Looking at the squad, my take is:

Madsen- Will get better, needs time.
Varane- 800K. Improved and will get a good fee at some point.
Celar- Took a while to adapt, found some form, injured. Better than what we had/ sold
Nardi- Free and improvement
Bennie- Free, One for the future
Vale- Free, versitile i heard, watch this space
Herverton- Never meant to be a starter, loaned out, will make a fee hopefully.
Morrision- Good player, Improving, will get better
Morgan- Free and will get better
Esquadina- Free I think
Saito- Loan, improved us
Ronnie Edward- No question improved us.
Yang- Not needed
Ashby- Got better, but mixed
Dembele- Injured but has promise.
Anderson- Free and helped keep us up last season
Frey- Free and low wages- Scored important goals. Injuries stopped in getting double figures

I get Orwellian vibes when I read Nourry’s press releases.
It’s like they’re written in “Newspeak.”

A number of people have raised the question and he’s not answered.
Do we all need to ask the same question to him on this thread to post on it?
I don’t believe he has any inside knowledge just as I don’t believe the likes of lassel when he posts his intimate knowledge of all things Marti Cifuentes.

Dearie me, we weren't born yesterday. Does Lee Hoos know club resources are being used to peddle propaganda on a club forum that ultimately, accounts for an utterly miniscule portion of the fanbase?

To be honest I suspect we're not far from the nepo baby going after people that are publicly critical of him and trying to cancel their season tickets.

Wait, this is so much fun. Being ridiculed for writing shorthand for Zamora and saying he scored in the 89 minute but you think I meant 1989. you just cant make this up. Well done.

Thanks for your take. I do appreciate it.

The common theme seems to be improved, improving, getting better and having promise.

My confusion here is if the standard these guys are coming from is below the standard we currently operate at, we're basing our whole recruitment strategy on playing a division below us, right?

I read this entire thread while my Mrs watched the Prince Harry interview.

At one stage, she said, can you believe the deluded nonsense he’s coming out with? Does he think we’re that stupid?

I said, “I didn’t know you read LFW, Love”.

this thread is hilarious, but also very sad. I wasn't on any of the forums back in the day to witness the QBlock Pete stuff so only know it by legend. But from what I've read this sounds remarkably similar.

But BobbyZ in 89? Do us a f*ckin favour mate. What do they even hope to achieve with this BS?

I dont think so but with our budgets we have to shop for rough diamonds and not everyone will work out. Obviously we would all like them to be world beaters on the first season but realisitically it doest happen and they will take time to develop. Bigger budget would imprve things but we seem to have learnt our FFP lessons there and going the sustainable route.
