Great result yesterday against Sunderland. Credit to the players, the staff, and especially the 1000 or so amazing fans who made the trip – that kind of support, in a game with nothing riding on it, speaks volumes.
I’ve been reflecting over my morning coffee and just wanted to share a few thoughts. I know not everyone will agree, but hopefully it comes across in the spirit it’s meant – as a long-time fan trying to see the full picture.
Marti deserves credit for keeping us up last season – he did the job he was brought in to do. But this season, we saw many of the same problems. We started with tactics that didn’t suit the squad – too passive, too deep, no real cutting edge. The players looked unsure of their roles and lacking confidence. When we eventually changed approach, results picked up – but it took too long, and the early damage was done.
From what I’ve heard, he wasn’t well-liked behind the scenes either. Stubborn, slow to adapt, quick to deflect when things went wrong – and very happy to take the praise when they didn’t. He’s clearly a good coach, but I don’t think he was ever truly the right fit for this club. I won’t miss the terrace songs.
On the other hand, I think Christian Nourry deserves more credit than he gets. He’s only 28, but age doesn’t define ability. He inherited a tough job – tight FFP limits, a small budget, and a club that’s been firefighting for years. And yet, recruitment has clearly improved. Not every signing will be an instant success, but all have contributed, and a few could add real long-term value – which is crucial for us as a selling club. They’ll take time to adapt, but there’s a shift in thinking, and that’s progress.
The Ben Williams situation clearly had an impact – he was offered a big opportunity abroad and took it, which is understandable. But the void it left in the football department was felt. That said, I’ve heard that’s now been addressed for next season, which is good news.
Of course, there’s a lot to do this summer. We need a head coach who suits the group, a more consistent playing style, and a couple of clever additions. But I genuinely feel more hopeful than I have in a while. There’s a bit of stability creeping in, and for once, it feels like we’re not just lurching from one short-term fix to the next.
One thing we do need to change though – the way we treat some of our players. Madsen’s taken stick all season, often when he’s done little wrong. Now it’s Dembele. It’s like we always need someone to have a go at. These lads are human. They need support, not abuse. Confidence matters.
Anyway, that’s just my view – take it or leave it. I’m not pretending everything’s perfect, but I do think there are a few more reasons for quiet optimism than people give credit for.
Thanks again to Clive – this board remains a brilliant space, even when we don’t all agree. Have a great summer everyone – and here’s to next season, hopefully with a new head coach who can take us forward on this mad old rollercoaster we all insist on riding.

I said improved the squad, not completed it. Said with our budgets it will take time to get where we need to be.
Looking at the squad, my take is:
Madsen- Will get better, needs time. Varane- 800K. Improved and will get a good fee at some point. Celar- Took a while to adapt, found some form, injured. Better than what we had/ sold Nardi- Free and improvement Bennie- Free, One for the future Vale- Free, versitile i heard, watch this space Herverton- Never meant to be a starter, loaned out, will make a fee hopefully. Morrision- Good player, Improving, will get better Morgan- Free and will get better Esquadina- Free I think Saito- Loan, improved us Ronnie Edward- No question improved us. Yang- Not needed Ashby- Got better, but mixed Dembele- Injured but has promise. Anderson- Free and helped keep us up last season Frey- Free and low wages- Scored important goals. Injuries stopped in getting double figures

I'd also like to clarify why you've identified that Varanne was signed for 800K. I'm sure this was an undisclosed transfer fee. How and why do you know this? Also, what was the fee for Madsen? How do they compare? If Madsen was 800K+1 I reckon that's good business. If however Madsen was 4M+ it's not.
Let's be open, honest and above all, united in our love of the Hoop.

RE Varane I have seen that figure touted when he was signed. Not sure what the fee for Madsen was or Celar. But I also read that the sale of Dykes, Armstrong and the wages of other released players meant we could afford them sustainable I think.

The last set of accounts listed "post balance sheet events" as a net spend of £6m+ this summer just gone.
With £3m coming in for Dykes and Armstrong, that means this lot cost us £9m.
The club were very quick to get in touch before we did our write up of the accounts and say the outgoings were listed as a worst case scenario (all the signings meet all their clauses and we owe the maximum amount) while all the incomings were done assuming they never meet any of their clauses ever. A like-for-like comparison was more like £2.7m, apparently.
Still, if Charlie, who knows absolutely nothing and is just a fan who hangs around the club which was founded as Christchurch Rangers in 1882 and took up their current name after merging with St Judes Institute four years later, says Varane only counts for £800k of that. Then Celar and Madsen cost....

1. What do you think is the ambition for the board for next season? We have now had a decade of simply trying to stay up with no attempt to even have a cup run.
2. What’s going on with our stadium?
We are the only club in the whole Championship who within the last 20 years has not had a new stadium or had significant work on their current stadium. We continue to fall further and further behind other clubs in this area. Our ground has had no significant work in 40 years since we had seats added to the Loft.

Wait, this is so much fun. Being ridiculed for writing shorthand for Zamora and saying he scored in the 89 minute but you think I meant 1989. you just cant make this up. Well done.
But he didn’t score in the 89th minute did he? He scored in the 90th, in fact just 10 seconds before the end of the 90th minute! Perhaps your AI only picked up the 89?!

We met Richard Riley on the train coming back to London yesterday. He had been at Sunderland with his wife. He was very happy meeting fans. Didn’t even know what he looked like until yesterday! Definitely took from it he wants the best for QPR. Let’s see!
