goodbye to another one of us, RIP Dad 14:00 - Jul 15 with 4676 views | westberksr | having reached a very unexpected age of 88 I said goodbye to my dad, Martin Reed, this morning. by the time he couldn't get up to the upper loft a few years ago, at the age of 82, he'd been going to Rangers for over 70 years. Born and bred in Hayes with family in Acton he was a regular at both QPR and Hayes all of his life; even going to games at Hayes with neighbours in later years when we were playing away. I'd offered to switch to a lower seat but he decided it was a bit too much anyway. for the last 20 odd years we sat in Upper Loft JU, with Dad moaning at people standing up once his legs didn't get him up quick enough! We did countless away days together and i have so many happy memories of going up and down the country, just the 2 of us. This all culminated in the play off final and having finally seeing us win a final in his company ticked the final box for me; I never expected him to last this long as even then his health wasn't great. we got to the stage that i'd buy his season ticket every year as a combined birthday, fathers day and Xmas as he genuinely wanted for nothing else apart form that and his sky sports subs! I worked on the basis that it's his fault i support this club and if i was going to watch this rubbish i was going to make him endure it too! although a lifelong R he never pressured me into supporting us, but as i'm 57 now and grew up at the time of Gerry, Stan & co it wasn't a hard decision. he was one of the kindest and most gentle people you could wish to meet. Never had a bad word to say about anyone and also had a sense of comfort with his lot. As long as my mum was happy, so was he. Spent endless years ferrying me around to any football i played and then taking my to HQ when work permitted and always had time to keep me company with whatever pointless away game i decided to drag him to. Later on my travelling in to HQ always meant a stop off in Hayes to pick him up, lunch in the cafe in Bloemfontein Road and a couple of bets in William Hill. His inability to pronounce foreign players names was an endless source of amusement to me; Chris Kiwomya being 1 that stood out like a scene from the Fast Show and the Unpronounceables sketch. I can say without any doubt that i've not only lost my Dad today, but my best mate too. RIP Dad xx

goodbye to another one of us, RIP Dad on 17:51 - Jul 15 by Lblock | Was so sorry to hear this news earlier today Stu and just expressing heartfelt condolences again from myself and B I know from our conversations it’s been tough these last months but your old fella was a true fighter to the end….. clearly where that gnarly centre back got into you. Thoughts with you, your Mum, brother and rest of family. Keep your chin up and your eyes ahead — I’m always about if needed (PS - thank God you weren’t dragging your Dad along to gigs….. you’d have finished him off years ago!!!) goodbye to another one of us, RIP Dad on 20:28 - Jul 15 by 100percent | Sorry to hear this Stu. Loved having you and your dad sitting in front to us in JU Upper, having a mutual moan about the tepid football, lack of legroom and mid table supremacy. He was a great man, with our acquired taste at heart. Will see you when once we get back to losing at home.... Condolences from la famiglia Wilkins... X |
thanks Ivor yep, he loved our little spot in front of you guys. Part of the reason for not moving was he knew i chatted to people around us and didn't want to disrupt that. Also didn't want to take the chance of getting soaked in the Paddocks either! see you in August

We all have those Rangers moments when we think, "why do we bother?"...this is about as good a reminder as you can get as to why. This really is what it's all about. He will still be with you at every game, all that history together embedded in your souls. Sending love and strength to you & yours.

We're all doing fine, Dave Is on a different level at work now he's living In stock broker Sevenoaks and Is currently on holiday In Mauritius with Mrs Dave and our two Granddaughters, my other lad sold his place In Lambourne and followed us up to Wantage. It's a struggle now to get to QPR at my age, my other lad drove us last time but he has his own business to run so It's difficult to get to LR now, not Impossible of course but difficult. I'm just thinking, everytime I drove to a game with you we lost every game Spuds at home, WBA away, Scunthorpe away. Once again Stu God bless your old Dad, I'm glad to have met him.
| My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic. |
