Did Madsen get minutes? where is he at? very curious to see if he can continue where he left off end of last season.

He came on with a few others with about 20 minutes to play. He played the long ball forward to Bennie who laid it off to Pearman for our 2nd goal.

He was awful. Every touch and pass went to the opposition. Miles off it, although he has been sidelined with injury. Not sure what excuses the rest of them can muster.

Larkeche and Adamson skinned all afternoon. Midfield non existent with no protection or forward momentum with the possible exception of Dembele. Completely outplayed by a team that looked organised and composed. Need to ditch the kids for the last two friendlies and get what’s left of the first team out on the pitch together.

Read nothing into the game especially how shocking we were in the opening 15.

HOWEVER, not being able to name a single fit striker two weeks before the season sums the fragility of this squad up. It is pathetic as it was pathetic to think the four we had last season were anywhere near "adequate".

Am I overreacting? Possibly, But we are playing almost all of the Dev Squad and they do not have a 9 who is match ready. Five strikers in the entire club, one wants to leave, two who are never fit or available, one who has to go on loan and one who can generously be called mediocre and is scared of his own shadow.

The full backs are alarming, but at least we have bodies there although Larkeche looks a downgrade on Paal, which I did not think was possible...

As ever 4 signings and 6 players to return from injuries short of a passable team...

A glum assessment, but hard to disagree with it - and I won't.

I don't think the squad is necessarily weaker than last season, and we have one or two promising incomers, but I don't think it's good enough, front to back. I'd be amazed if we outscore last season's mediocre 53. Frey won't get more than a handful, and, after that, where are they coming from?

Still, it's a process, right?

I guess I may as well do the manager's post-match interview for him and get my fabled disappointment in early. To go out on a crazy limb, I think it just might go something like this.

Julien: Hard-pressed smile. Gallic shoulder shrug.

Tyler: So, Julien, how do you sum that up?
Julien: I mean, evidemment, obviosleee, eet's not ze result we wanted. And zat's disaapointing for all of uz!
Tyler: You mention the result. So it's fair to say that affects everyone's mood even before the season's started?
Julien: I mean, I'm sorry for ze expression, but I don't care about ze reesult in pre-season. It's za process. Za process. As Morcheeba put it back in ze ninetees, 'it's all part of za process . . .' [turns on a geriatric Walkman]
Tyler: Sank you - I mean, thank you, that make things a lot clearer. To start with, we seemed to have difficulty playing the ball out from the back.
Julien: I mean, oui, sometimes we make some wrong choices. Short balls. Not long balls. Or long balls. Not short. And we have lots of young, young players. Tres, tres young. Some bebes who shit zer nappies.
Tyler: Also, we seem to lack creativity in midfield. Where was our playmaking?
Julien: Ahh, Monsieur Chair was in the nautee chair. He threw a rock at me getting on ze autobus and gave me a massive mal a la tete. Without 'im, zat is zat. Personne. C'est cela. As Monsieur Sartre once said, ze 'ell is ozer people. Surtout when you don't have any ozer people.
Tyler: And we don't have a striker . . .
Julien: Helas, zat problem is, how do you say, siecles old. From before when I wuz 'ere. Before any of us wuz 'ere. Before la vie was 'ere.
Tyler: So, apart from the fact we can't pass the ball out from the back, keep it in midfield, create anything, and can't score goals, it's all good?
Julien: Exactement. It's za process. Not za ree-sult. Not za performance. Not ziz 'looking after ze ballon'. Ze voyage, not za destination.
Tyler: So there you have, it, it's going to be a super dupa hoopsa season. I can't wait. And here's Andy Sinton. Andy, what do you make of it all?
Andy S: [makes long deflated noise like he's pushing out a massive jobby]
Tyler: Come on you Rs etc.
Muffled voices: Quelle horreur, Sacre Bleu etc. etc.

That’s harsh on Madsen. He hardly ever saw the ball but as mentioned above, provided the pass that lead to the second goal. He needs the ball to his feet but was never going to see it given the way we played today.

What was worrying was not so much individual performances as the fact that, as a team, we looked like we had no idea how to press, deal with their press, bring the ball forward or cope with their wingers.

Totally agree on both points. By contrast Cardiff looked really well drilled. And Madsen does at least always look up when he receives the ball, like he's looking for a big through ball. But he was on the pitch for that final 15 minutes where we basically didn't have the ball at any point except when doing the goal kick routine.

It feels like the big plus is Poku, so far (and there will be more so let’s not lose our minds in July). Him over Smyth out there a significant upgrade.

Edwards has gone but I like Mbengue stepping out with the ball so you could generously say that’s sort of like for like, with in theory JCS to come back (I know, we’ve all had a drink).

Everywhere else the team looks the same, or weaker.
Same collection of people who want to play ten, minus Saito, plus vale.
Same issues at full back, now minus Paal who hasn’t been replaced I’m sorry.
Same CM with the same problem every time we play in a two and every time we play it short into Firld, minus Colback who is important and with Varane mysteriously nowhere to be seen.
Same terrible (terrible) 4 strikers, one who has disappeared again, one permanently injured, one can’t find his own ars with both hands and one getting the loan he needed 2 years ago.

So, work to do.

Agree with this.

Two weeks to go, and no one can play up front. Shocking but fixable.
Possibly had to rest Celar as they didn't want an injury this early.

I still wonder why we did not play Madsen up front. I mean, this was the perfect game to try it out.
Richards crying off again was no surprise.

What we learned was that Sutton cannot play up front
Field needs someone else in the middle to help him out, DMC-wise. Dale is not the answer there.
Field was at fault for both goals, caught in possession for the first and not tracking Colwill for the second.
Adamson looked better at RB, but I suspect he could do a job at DMC instead.
Mbengue got caught out of position a few times, but looked okay, though. I am still not sure if he came up against a Frey-like player; would he win the 1-1 duels.
Cook still has it.
Morrison looked good and should be in the starting pair with Cook.
Akindileni looked decent too, looks like a good prospect.
Larkeche will be a struggle if he's our first choice LB.
Vale is a AMC or winger, he cannot play midfield on that performance. He just does not get stuck in enough to help out Field.
Poku had an average game for once, but seeing as he got no service hard to tell. Needs a number 9 to be a foil off.
Morgan is decent, good to have him in the squad.
Dembele plays better as number 10.
Madsen was still Madsen.

We still need a CF, LB and DMC in that order.
Buying that new CD today, means there is no chance of us ever buying Edwards even with mythical Eze money, as if there ever was anyway.

Colwill, for them, looked good again. If they don't get promoted next season, he will have one year left on his contract, and they will have to sell, but at L1 prices. Vultures will start to circle.

zzzzzzzzzz

Yeh, but you don't want them playing Friday, Wednesday, Saturday until it's necessary. Don't want any more injuries.

Yep understand but I just want to see our best players on the park getting familiar with each others movements, etc, etc......throwing 11 starters on the pitch doesn't do it for me. I know its a tough call for the Manager & his Team.

You need to look at Madsen's passing again because you are very wrong incorrect.....look at the ball he played for one of the goals!!!! Terrible. He also played several simple passes too.

Given how popular Marti was I dont think it will take much for fans at the ground to turn on Stephan/the Board if the season doesn't start well. I know I'll certainly be banging the Burn Nourry drum if his squad building again turns out to be utter shite.

Two players whom have left and continually 'slagged' for a variety of reasons by posters, namely Paal & Colback, are the two calm heads we need & sorely missed.

We also need to get off Madsens back & give him a chance to continue the good work he did at the back end of the last season

Ha ha, I mean when he is 'on the ball', he is calm, cool & collected as they say, keeps the ball instead of giving it away, uses the ball well........not when he is doing a 'ginger'.

Agree on Colback, but totally disagree on Ken Paal. Yes, he was a steady Eddy, but he couldn't defend, couldn't beat a man and could only land a cross one in every 20 attempts. Corners. Say no more.

I cannot believe that he is that difficult to replace.

Anyone who actually thinks that Larkeche is good enough for this lead needs a real good head rub. Esquidinha looks a better bet and there is no way on earth we could rely on a youngster like that to bang out 40 good games.
Adamson has energy, but also looks like he cannot defend.

Loans a plenty, not until the end of September when our run of "winnable" games will slowly start to run out.

We are a long, long way from being a passable team this season. How many pundits are hailing us as a dark horse, I'll never know - I am not sure that our horse could be any darker at this moment in time...

Get those fckrs fit and playing and I might start to see the light, but the team we are currently putting out is way, way off the required standard.

Can we go out yet?

Can anybody guess what our starting XI for PNE will be. Maybe Saturday will provide some more clues, but ATM, it's a mystery. It's not helped by a set of injuries on a par with last season.

Spotted both Varane and Kelman watching from the sidelines. If they’re staying, one would hope we see them on Saturday.

The player assessment period is now surely over. Time for the big boys to step up and get this show on the road.

Indeed.

Whoever thought it was okay to persist with the same four almost permanently injured forwards yet again this season should be run out of town.

This has all the makings of yet another shambolic season.

I think it’s pretty clear as of today that Esquardinha is the presumptive starting LB for the season with Larkeche getting a run over today to see if he can be a squad option.

Wouldn’t be surprised if we try and dip into the loan market for a LB and move Larkeche on before the end of the window.
