Just doesn’t work does it? So, what’s the answer?

Get rid of Madsen ASAP.

Him and Celar are shite.

The only way I see Madsen possibly working is in Chair's position and moving Chair out wide again, maybe dropping Dembele so we have a bit more height on the pitch. But even in doing all that to accommodate Madsen, I think he'd be a bit of a passenger and wouldn't justify it. The frustration is that we've seen glimpses at the end of last season of the player we hoped we'd signed, similar to Celar in those few games before his injury.

Or maybe he's an option in home games only where we can be a bit more open and he can play passes from a deeper role. He'd soon get targeted though I'm sure.

I suspect we need to move both Madsen and Celar on.

Poll: Who’s better?

Two big Nourry investments so questions will be asked if they get shipped out, which he won't like and I suspect will do everything within his power to ensure it doesn't happen.

However...

They are both still Shite

The pair of them gel together about as well as Erich Honecker and Spiro Agnew exchanging small talk while they wait for the final spin cycle at their local Laundromat.

I still think Field is a sound, footballer of passable remedial ability at this level , Madsen is about as visible at the sharp end of a game , when it matters, as thermal insulation foam in a wall cavity,

The only thing i can think off is pushing him further up the field playing off a main striker... who knows... the physicality of this brutal league engulfs him and casts him assunder to the four fackin winds like a piece of tissue.

poor sod.

Sam Field is not the problem. He wasn’t the problem when we were a play off hunting team under Warburton and he is not the problem now. BUT fcuk me, work on your finishing, lad!!

Field and Varane we are fine (see countless games last season). They were strong today. I think in they are a top 10 central midfield.

Add another genuine CM to it (see Morgan or Hayden) and remarkably we compete and win games. Like last year. Our entire good run was those three (Morgan, Field, Varane).

There are so many ways you can cut it, but Madsen should not start.

Just back , so much to say but if Madsen is in the line up , it’s not going to be our day , if you are a professional player up against him you must be thinking you are in for an easy day

I like Sam. I would have him in the side every week and twice on sundays.

His finishing is worse than lennie peters trying to hit double one with a ker-plunk stick but i appreciate him as rack and pinion of the side.

Would love to see Hayden back. Can't really expand on my post on madsen in the match thread. He's drowning.

I like Chair in the role he had until Dembele blew up (again). Field, Varane and him feels like a good balance. Should Varane go, which I still think is plausible and we don’t sign anyone it has to be Field-Morgan-Chair surely. He can’t possibly be starting NM at a real football team like Coventry in their own ground.

I struggle to believe we’d have got less out of any professional footballer than we got from our Nicolas today. The kids tell me he’s an ‘8’ or ‘10’, a baller etc. but he gave the ball away from 1/3 of his passes, didn’t tackle anyone, didn’t shoot, didn’t do anything frankly that someone as poor as Dixon-Bonner could have or one of the plethora of kids around the squad. He is just sort of there in the way Jenas was but without the occasional goals.

Mate, his finishing is sh*te, we all get it. Annoying as f*ck. I was there.

But if that’s what people think the problem is, they’re looking in the wrong place.

Madsen often looks as though he has the ability but sorely lacking “ gumption”
D'you think the club are putting him in the shop window ?

The trouble is Madsen cannot play in the 10 position / or any advanced midfield position because he is slow as a turtle and cannot therefore press. It’s not an option in a side that is meant to be high energy, high intensity pressing from the front. You need legs, stamina, and pace across the first 10 yards. He’s got none of that. Meaning he can only play in a flat midfield 3. And we don’t play that way…

The answer is Field and Varane as the two but Field as the 6. He is not an 8.

Madsen does no work,

Northern did his pieces at a game towards the end of last season watch him slope around the pitch hiding,

I watched him likewise today,

So many times one step to the right or left or forward or backwards and he would stepped out of his markers shadow and be in a position to take the ball,

So many times he just stood still so wasn't Ispace to receive a pass,

For a player we're meant to play through he's spend the whole game playing hide & seek,

Never seen a player more unsuited to the Championship.

Thing is, if you put field at 6, we don’t / can’t play out. Which is fine in an Ainsworth side, but doesn’t work in our club model. So he can only play 8, and he isn’t great at that role. His number 8 position will increasingly come under threat of competition, as Varane has taken the number 6 position. Suspect Morgan will be favoured at some point. Morgan and Varane is a promising partnership as suggested last season on the few occasions they paired up.

Varane and Field is and will be fine as a partnership for a club with our budget. Indeed, tweak the playing style to suit them and we’ll be very hard to beat.

Walk before we run. They played together for 40mins today, and we were the better team. With Madsen in there it was a shambles

Let’s focus on the big problems first!

I get all the anti Nourry sentiment, but there’s a guy overseeing our recruitment for the last 6/7/8(?) years who gets absolutely no ire nor seems to have any accountability. Andy Belk. Not saying he’s entirely to blame, but I find it odd that we’ve cycled through so many managers and 2 CEOs and he is completely Scot free from all chat.

Cushy position it seems

When I talk about 6 and 8, it doesn't have to be rigid to the point where Varane cannot come and get the ball. As long as Field keeps it simple with passes he is a 6. He should be the holding midfielder. IMO its Varane who should be the 8 and join in with the likes of Chair, Poku and Dembele. He is a much better technical footballer than Field. But they should always more importantly play as a two.

Madsen is arguably the worst player in the Championship and stealing a living. You can't beat teams at this level with only one professional standard midfielder in centre mid. It's that simple.

Answer is to drop Madsen and sell him at first opportunity. I'm sure he's lovely guy who wants to succeed at QPR, but it just isn't going to happen for him here and every game he starts our chances of winning drop massively

Bit early for the belk being put in the firing line again , id have though we would get to at least 6/7 defeats then his name will appear on the chopping block before the managers name is next in line ,
Remember he’s just being told what players to look for the rest is done by nourrry etc he’s just running the numbers not scouting players , do we still actually see players in the flesh ?

The thing is in recent times Belk if he has been with Nourry key for recruitment, then he has overseen the following.

Mbengue, Morrison, Akindileni, Esquerdinha, Varane, Vale, Poku, Dembele, Burrell and Kone.

All have potential or have already proved their worth.

Madsen, Celar and Santos have not worked out.

So for me, that's a good enough hit rate for a club of our means.

It's kind of frustrating that the two highest in terms of transfer costs, have shown to be the most underwhelming.

I would think both Madsen and Celar are being touted for clubs in middle or northern Europe, where they can start afresh and where their styles of play, can be more appreciated.

Hard to disagree with any of the above comments, but Medway and Hunter's are particularly on-point!

Yesterday, and while conscious of his full and frank pre-season interview, NM reminded me of the kid forced to play football at school who you notice he's actively avoiding the ball and you think, my God, what's he going to be like when it's rugby time?

This man is not one of a CM pairing. It's unfair to play him there for him, SF, and the team. However, when you look at how Morgan's got stuck in to playing out of position, then the real issue surfaces: NM is an avoider lacking the minerals to get stuck in and give it a go.

CN needs to suck it up and confront the algorithm! It's picked someone unsuited to the English game. It would be better for all concerned if NM moved on. Maybe a loan to allow him to regain whatever form and confidence he had that enticed us, and which might eventually attract a permanent move.

It happens. Shame, he seems a nice lad but shake hands and wish him the best, but do move him on asap.
