GCSE results day 09:51 - Aug 21 with 1515 viewsMonkey_Roots

I just wanted to say best of luck to any GCSE R's today.

I just found out that my daughter passed all of hers, so we're a very happy household this morning.

The last week has been like waiting for the final whistle when we knocked over the scum 1-0 (and Drogba got sent off :D)

Absolutely. I used to get up at 5.30 in preparation to go online to check how my students performed then go into school later. Very tense day for all involved.

My late father made me an offer as I went into year 11 - £50 for an A, £30 for a B.

He obviously hadn't paid any attention to my academic record, cos I got 1 A*, 7As & 2 Bs.

I got home, beaming and ready to buy every PS2 game under the sun

was a very stressful morning with my son
3 years ago he got zero on his Maths so hes had to work his backside off and ended up getting a 5 which is a C in old money. None of us could beleive it really, he was expecting to have to re take it

He passed his others as well and managed to get the A Levels he wanted after a stressful morning of teachers at 6th form putting us through torture as they were not sure one of his grades was good enough but eventually agreed to give him a chance, was like being on the X Factor

Am very proud of him, he had first year of high school basically as home schooling due to pandemic, he's had to have an operation for his clef lip and palate treatment and had to watch QPR for the last few years but he's got through it and has an opportunity to do what he wants to.

Hope everyone else got the grades they wanted and if not although it feels like the end of the world it really isn't, I failed mine first time and have ended up with a Uni degree and a decent job so if I can do it anyone can

Similar story in that my late dad promised me a racing bike if I got into grammar school. When I got in, he too had no recollection and gave me 50p instead.

Good luck to the young 'uns.

Similar thing but with quitting smoking
I came from a household of smokers apart from my mum
My dad (a doctor) had an aneurism and was told to quit smoking. I gave up there and then and told my 2 sisters I would give the £50 each if they would give up.

Both did and I was delighted to cough up(!)

My dad was in hospital it was a weekend when we were away to Coventry he told me not to stay at home and to go to the game

We lost 4-1 Don Givens scored it poured with rain and got drenched

None of us ever smoked again

captains fantastic

Thats great to hear Dave.

My daughter also got a 5 in Maths, although she told me it was a low B :D

Sounds like your little fella has been through a lot - I hope he starts getting things his way now.

We used to use "A,B,C" ratings at work for appraisals and the feedback was that there was not enough points in the scale. We would describe people as a "High C" to differentiate them from their peers.

We switched to number ratings "1->5" with 1 being the best, but no-one could get their head around it! ;p

"Is a 3 good?" that kind of business... ;D

49 years since I got my GCE results and still vividly recall getting a U grade in French.

For anyone in the same boat today, don’t panic, I circumnavigated the problem by speaking English in a very loud and aggressive tone whenever I’ve met a Frenchman and it’s served me well.

If id known that when i was eleven I could have bunked off five years of daily French lessons which served absolutely no purpose.

Hope that helps anyone who didn’t get the language results they’d hoped for.

47 years for me, also got a U in French, rest all B & C.
Actually now regret not taking the opportunity to learn French and Italian (best mate at school was Italian).
Did 1 year 6th Form and decided academia wasn’t for me so did a 5 year apprenticeship in Building Services Engineering (heating and plumbing!).
Good luck to all those getting their results it’s a stressful time.

Great thread.

I was 'top o' the class' in primary school. I 'underacheived' all through secondary school. I was 'lazy as sin' in college/nightschool.

Ten years later, I'd realised that none of those things were true.
It's far more complicated than that.

It may take the kids today a few days, weeks, months or even years to realise that it's more complicated than that.
They may stare at their results and may be tempted to feel that their worth is measured merely in letters and numbers.
They may dance, drink, cry, bawl, holler, scream and shriek, with joy, with relief, with pain, with confusion. Or they may not care a damn.

I wish them all well and hope they are all loved.
I hope they all rise tomorrow.
The sun will surely rise at some stage and it's ok if they rise a bit later than the sun.

As long as they do x

Back at the start of COVID (Feb 2020) my then 10 year old son was stuck at home with very little input from his primary school. We asked him if he would like to do some extra subjects just to keep him occupied. He loves Manga books and cartoons so asked if he could learn Japanese.

We found an online tutor and he has been doing an hour a week since. His first tutor was a grad student who he was with for four years. She is now living full time in Japan so we had to find another.

Second tutor suggested he was good enough to sit a GCSE which was a surprise to me! Anyway turns out second tutor was a bit rubbish and didn't really understand the GCSE syllabus so we got a third tutor a couple of months ago who was more up to speed. We soon realised that the exam was going to be much harder than we expected and there were huge bits of the course he had never covered.

Anyway after a couple of weeks of hard swatting he went ahead with the exam (mainly because we had paid for it). He was the only western heritage child sitting the exam. The exam was four different papers including spoken q&a.

He didn't think he did that well and was hopeful he may scrape a 3. Yesterday he got his result. He got a 6!!

I promised him that if he got better than a 5 I would take him out for the "best burger in London"..so we're out Saturday

My son got his results yesterday. 18 months ago he had two ungraded results in maths exams in a row, his other subjects were bottoming out as well and the general consensus was that he was lazy. I was really stunned by this and I more than suspect that he was suffering more than he let on about his parents divorcing which to say the least was very acrimonious. And I admit I had taken my eye off the ball with his schooling. Anyway, his big love is aviation and since being knee high to a grasshopper he has always wanted to be a pilot. So me and Josh reached an agreement which also included I’m out from his teachers which involved them advising me on his attitude and work each month. In return Josh would get a flying lesson each month.

His maths was just below a 5. In total in old money he would have had 6 C’s and 2 D’s. In one meeting with his science teacher earlier this year he told me he had never witnessed such a turnaround in a pupils work and attitude and that it was such a pleasure to witness!

And the flying? Josh has now accumulated 27 hours of flying, is now ready to go solo and is well on course to get his private pilots licence (PPL) by early next summer once he is 17. Then he will start on his journey to get his Air Transport Pilots Licence (ATPL), hopefully being picked up by an airline and if not, he will continue this journey through his flying school. Really proud of him. Well done my son!
