Players with great starts who then wobbled on 11:52 - Oct 6 with 1449 views | BrianMcCarthy | Brock. Unbelievably good start. We thought we'd hit gold on his debut at Upton Park and he played really well as we went top....but it just seemed to fade away slowly. He stopped imposing himself on games, looked a bit soft, a bit slow, a bit disinterested. When Jim Smith took him with him up to Newcastle, I think we were all a bit pleased. Or maybe relieved. Eighteen months after Upton Park. [Post edited 6 Oct 11:53]

Great call. That day at Upton Park I think we all knew we were looking at a special team but for me on that day Brock stood out even more than Parker and Mark Dennis because he pulled the strings that made the attack purr. Memory is hazy but I think he got injured just after the Liverpool defeat and in his absence we went into a bit of free fall in November (as per bleeding usual). I remember praying for his return but when it happened it was all a bit meh.

Pedant alert. Ledesma is from a place approximately 6,000 miles South-West of Portugal known as Argentina. And also, as said, it was Carlisle not Exeter. Knew who you meant tho.

The club releasing commemorative t-shirts after his hat-trick has to rate highly as one of the clingiest things they've ever done. And yes, I bought one. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

The 'word' doing the rounds was that Bruce Rioch had grabbed Spencer by the throat at Exeter FC after a friendly game. I couldn't work out his dip In performances, I thought he was an excellent player. When he scored for us at Elm Park against the fakes he came over to us fans behind the goal and declared that 'He was the Man'. There was also some Welsh bloke who played for us but ended up In prison, I thought he was good.

also scored two against Liverpool in that game where Trevor Francis wife raced down the directors box to kiss him. Was homesick for Scotland if I remember correctly.

Players with great starts who then wobbled on 16:02 - Oct 6 with 816 views | numptydumpty | Hope my memory is serving me right, but i seem to remember being very impressed initially by Mark Stein and he faded from the scene quite quickly. Was a decent player at times for me and underachieved.

Players with great starts who then wobbled on 16:05 - Oct 6 with 809 views | numptydumpty | Another wouldnt say he flew out the blocks but was very decent for a young one was Conor Masterson, who we seemingly banished, then was loaned out and then moved on. For me, was more decent than the opportunities that presented themselves to him.

I'd argue that 14 goals from 87 games for us was a decent return with Wardley. His time did tail off but at least he was able to move his own stuff out, as he worked as a removals man as well.

Players with great starts who then wobbled on 16:29 - Oct 6 with 761 views | slmrstid | I remember Jordan Cousins coming off the bench for his debut when we rifled Leeds 3-0 in a season opener and he looked amazing and...well...that was about as good as he ever got.
Players with great starts who then wobbled on 16:32 - Oct 6 with 754 views | Esox_Lucius | Jose Boswinga, came on as substitute in his 1st game and instantly demonstrated why he had won so much in the game. After a mostly undocumented bust up over being dropped by Redknapp and the club spin on the story, the fans turned on him with a vengeance, possibly due to the CFC connection, and his only memorable appearance after that was his last game vs Newcastle.

Players with great starts who then wobbled on 17:15 - Oct 6 with 707 views | CiderwithRsie | Now here's one dredged out of my mid-80s memory bank: little Mark Stein, signed at the start of the summer of 88 not long after Gary Bannister had moved on, and seemed to me a more or less like-for-like (nippy little bloke striker) replacement (though on checking, Stein wore no 10, not Banno's 9) 3 top-flight League goals in 5 starts (including one goal off the bench) plus one at the start of our League Cup run (yep, a real one, not sarcasm) by mid-October, it says here, then none in the next four games before being dropped while Ol' Man Francis started to run the show on the pitch. Just seemed to fade away after that and I sometimes forget he ever played for us.
