Charlie Kelman’s Leyton Orient 12:00 - Feb 8 with 62456 views | DannyPaddox | Up against Man City in the FFS that was offside FA Cup. I prepare to stand corrected but I think Charlie is still our player but as I take as much interest in modern football players contracts and transfers as I do in mobile phone contracts I could be wrong. Either way seems like a good lad and having a decent season with a club I like so up the O’s! Up against a central defender today in Ruben Dias who’s worth approx £75 mil … would love to see Charlie meg him. [Post edited 8 Feb 12:07]

Charlie Kelman’s Leyton Orient on 02:36 - Apr 2 with 1673 views | Match82 | Certainly seems like Charlie deserves a shot in this league for us next year. But if it doesn't work it paints us into a bit of a corner. You have to assume we'll need to give him 5-10 games minimum to prove his worth (gave Celar more than that) at which point, especially having Celar and potentially Frey still here, are we scrambling again to try and bring in another forward when we're well into the season and options are limited? Or, you bring another forward into the club in the summer and Kelman is potentially 3rd or 4th choice and won't get a run out. I guess the bright side is that we'll have the whole summer to look at him in training before deciding to roll with him or not.

Charlie Kelman’s Leyton Orient on 18:13 - Apr 1 by Superhoops2808 | I am at a loss when it comes to people saying we missing Steve Cook? Much of our points this season came when he was out injured - And we have only won twice since he came back into the side. Field I agree, but I am sorry the loss of Cook is not the reason behind our recent lack of form. |
The player I thought we missed most against Stoke was our fighting midget Saito. He has caused opposition defences especially their right side huge problems of late AND he is decent defensively on our left side where we had big problems without him at Stoke. Unfortunately we'll miss him for at least the next 2 games. Yang looked good going forward when he came on that side, but we shouldn't be giving him the ball when under pressure in our back third of the pitch.

Charlie Kelman’s Leyton Orient on 21:45 - Apr 1 by Hunterhoop | Cook has, himself, not been playing at the same level for after his injury. However, the point both I and Clive have tried to make is that Cook and Field add value outside their personal performance. They instill the standards in this team in terms of positional discipline, work rate, physicality. They aren’t perfect. They have the odd bad game. Field’s passing is mediocre and Cook’s legs are going. But watch how they interact with their teammates during games. They are constantly talking to teammates and pointing where people need to be. They organise everyone around them because they read the game, especially when we don’t have the ball, so much better than everyone else in the squad. You spend half the game without the ball so these leaders, organisers and standard setters are critical. Without them, everyone just coasts. |
Brilliant post - couldn't agree more. And the fact is with Cook (and Field) when the chips are down, a long way up North - such as at Burnley this season...he's the one you can totally rely on to be giving it everything. Having seen so many flaky centre halves over the years, my personal opinion is that he has been one of our more reliable, top drawer centre backs I have seen in many years.

Good point. Really Paal should have been sent off for that god awful free kick which led to the Saito incident!

Yet some want Cook no more. Crikey, he's only 33, same age as Van Dijk. Just like Liverpool in the case of the latter, we'd also be crazy in not retaining Cook beyond this season. "Age" aside, he's still our best defender and whilst he may be susceptible to injuries, he's still way more durable than Clarke-Salter. Add his significant premier league experience to his leadership qualities and on-field commitment, we can ill-afford to lose him, as is being demonstrably shown in his current absence. I can't remember who it was - maybe Super Ray - who said if you ever get injured past a certain age people think "your legs have gone". He's had a bad foot injury, he needs to get over it, and he will. He is only 33, nothing these days. Good luck finding as good a replacement next year for those that want him gone.

I'd say he's the most highly paid for a reason and that reason is noted above. Him and Field bring so much unseen influence to this brittle bunch of pansies it is unreal. He's Captain for a reason. I'd be offering him another two years with bonuses for certain attainments; or, a year with another year should he make x number of appearances. (Avoid the glossary "pay when play" at all costs)

At his age, a 1 year contract, perhaps with an extra year option on the club side? ought to be sufficient. But, it depends on the wages. I can't justify him being the highest paid at 34. So, he will have to take a substantial cut from the level previously alleged. It could still be higher than the majority of Championship CBs.

Super post this Hunter. At points over the last 3 years I've wondered to myself what the hell is it about QPR that makes 5/10+ losing runs so eminently achievable or somewhat routine. We did it under Beale, Critchley, Ainsworth and we've done it under Cifuentes too. We just seem to be so susceptible to losing all confidence and form and struggle to break out of those ruts. Given the playing squad and style had changed drastically over those periods it suggests it's rather something in the DNA of our club rather than simply tactical deficiencies, coaches decisions or poor quality squads. Reading your post highlights it's probably been a severe lack of on-pitch leadership at times that trigger those runs. Back in the Beale / Critchley days the closest things we had to leaders were Balogun and Field. Field had only just turned 24 when that C Beale pitched up, only 6 months or so older than Charlie Kelman now. Looking back at that season we really struggled for leaders. Whatever you think of the likes of Dunne and Dickie, I don't think they were the right types to marshal a poor team that was running on empty in terms of confidence. Field and Cook feel pivotal to our results in more ways than what they're able to do with the ball at their feet. They set standards and structure and hold players accountable. I guess Colback was meant to be another of those but I'm not sure he's anywhere near as effective. We need more of those types. It's not just an age / experience thing, it's natural leaders. Senior pros. Similarly I guess it's exactly why Warnock signed Hill and Derry as soon as he got here. Does that stuff show up in algorithmic scouting databases? I hope so as we're already perilously fragile and if we think it's simple to replace Cook with a young, technical centre half that shows well in productivity stats I think we could take a huge step backwards.
