It was, however, I'm a great believer that if you are having to loan players in, then there is something wrong with your 1st team squad and DS squad. The Mbengue signing helps rectify that.

Essentially, yes, correct. But I think most teams in our budget range in the Championship would probably require a loan if CB1 (Steve Cook), CB2 (Jake Clarke-Salter) and CB4 (Liam Morrison) all got injured at the same time as CB3 (Jimmy Dunne) is needed at right back/going to Sheff Utd. You can't really afford to carry first team standard centre backs at fifth and sixth choice on our sort of wage bill. In fact we were pretty fortunate to have somebody as experienced as Morgan Fox effectively as that fifth choice. Parachute payment clubs might be able to cope with losing four centre backs at once, but not at our level. Portsmouth, similar sort of bracket to us I expect, had to go get Rob Atkinson on loan. I very much doubt Preston's fifth choice centre back is up to much. QPR were a bit unlucky there. If Cook, JCS and Morrison are all injured at the end of December again then they'll probably be getting a loan again Mbengue or not because Fox is gone. Where it's really unforgiveable is shit CF1 Lyndon Dykes gets injured and you have to go get Christ Martin. I'll forgive them Edwards, and not just cos he's dreamy.

On the contrary, does the Edwards loan signing not show how it should and can be done? The possibility of getting players above our grade for far cheaper? I understand when you're a middling team you would want your own players to get the gametime, but would anyone have thought before 10/11 we would win the league? I like to think Walker, Tommy Smith, Routledge and Miller all played huge roles in that [Post edited 4 Jul 14:13]

Yeh he got injured almost immediately after moving. The two big headline Premier League loans last January were him and Danns and they both got crocked before the month was out. Hull Daily Mail report it's not just the Barry fee, and it's not the first time - you wouldn't just get slapped with a three window ban if this was the first time and a bit of an admin error. Rumours been going round the city of late payments to local suppliers at the stadium. It always starts like that - the local florist or the St John's Ambulance don't get paid, oh don't worry about it, admin error, nothing to see here.

I don't know if it's still true but there was an infamous 'stat' for a long time that every single club in the UK that had entered administration did so owing money to St John's Ambulance, who then had to get in line for their 10p in the pound while "all football debts must be settled in full". | | | | Login to get fewer ads

No one would do any transfer business with any team on that basis.
Rest of the Championship thread 25/26 on 15:02 - Jul 4 with 811 views | simmo | To add to the loan discussions, the other issue that's come about in recent years is PL teams being able to get huge amounts of financial comp for loaning their stars. It used to be that clubs in the Championship could take an academy star from the PL that could genuinely elevate the team, in exchange for a small wage contriution and giving that player some proper football experience. Bamford, Harvey Barnes, Mount, Taarabt, Guehi, Wilson, Ake, Reece James, Martinez, Gallagher, etc. Any one of those would cost millions to borrow now. At the same time PL academy numbers have swollen, which means the only loans that are affordable for non parachute clubs are 20 something academy veterans with minimal pro appearances that will probably never be PL standard. If you want the needle movers, you have to cover wages and pay a loan fee, which means Sheff U pay £3-5m to get Rak Saki to come off their bench, and we get Ashby because we have a mate on the Newcastle board. It's a shame PL teams aren't more strategic with their placement of young talent, sending them to places to maximise their development rather than whoever will pay the most. Would make the Championship more competitive too.

Nourry very clearly said he didn't like loans unless they were with a view to a permanent deal. Hopefully this season, with the squad more balanced, the loans that come in do have the permanent option. I think last seasons, bar Saito, were done in blind panic. Though Yang was a weird one. |
At the risk of dredging up a boring topic, Nourry has said many things that have less than a ships passing in the night relationship with the truth. They’ll take loans if good ones are offered to them because they want/need success asap. A man who pays a PR company to write copy calling him ‘the Lionel Messi of football backrooms’ cannot afford a third season in a row of 16th and below finishes in the championship…

I wish you'd been there to tell the Board not to buy Richards or loan in Laird, Roberts and Iroebugnan. i wonder what loan fees we paid for the latter three or wages for Richards.
