Are We Going Toulouse? Match Thread on 18:25 - Jul 18 by Esox_Lucius

Our future Barry Bannon?

He's carried us for the last 3-4 seasons despite the crap that gets posted on this board about him and I fully expect those hoping that Dembele or Vale or any one of the other pretenders will take his place will be rightfully disappointed.

He is Mr QPR and I hope he becomes that one club man we never hear of these days. A legend and the complete lynchpin of this team then, now and in the future.

Can we go out yet?

After watching this one ...

Walsh 6:
Did okay, good save in the second half. Not as good as Nardi.

Dunne 6:
Decent RB performance, what we needed after the 6-0 debacle.

Mbengue 7:
Decent in defence, I would like him tested against a big lump, as I am not sure about him in the air, but on the ground, he looked solid.

Akindelini 6:
Not bad, a little out of position, should have been punished when losing the ball, but a decent effort for a youngster.

Esquerdinha 6:
Looked good enough to come out of the DS as a sub for real matches. I still think we need an experienced LB.

Field 6:
Better than the last game, held up the oppo well.

Morgan 6:
Dropped deep, made himself available, decent performance.

Dembele 5:
Did okay and then got injured. Not really in the game enough while he was on. Should be played in the middle instead.

Chair 6:
Great running, dropped deep to help out (this must be a new tactic from the manager as Morgan did it as well). They doubled up on him a lot. So the oppo was aware of him.

Smyth 8:
Scored the first and got the pen. Terrorised them with his pace. And then ran back like a manic to help out the defence. Did all that in 55 mins!

Celar 5:
Poor hold-up play, only redeemed somewhat with a great penalty. We cannot rely on this guy.

Subs:
Poku 7:
This guy looks class, better at crossing than Dembele. Hes gonna be a revelation.

Sutton 6:
This kid is the real deal, no wonder we are looking to sell Kolli. Sutton is gonna be a star.

Bennie 5:
Better than the horror show of the last game, but did not do much. He won't make it; it's time to move him on.

Amadson 6:
He was more comfortable in CD than RB, but I still think he's a midfielder. Still need to see him tackle more.

Cook 6:
Didn't move around much, but looked solid. It was noticeable when he was on, that the oppo didn't get much out of us. Commanding presence still.

Larkeche 6:
Played quite well in attack, positioned well in defence. I would have liked to have seen him defend a bit more.

Pearman 6:
Looked quite useful in the middle, much better here than in a number 10 role. Sprayed the ball around well.

Tuck 5:
Better from him, looked more in the game. Still needs work.

Vale 6:
Some nice touches, nothing major.

Kelman 5:
Looked better than when I have seen him the past. Still unable to hold the ball up as needed.

Overall in the 2nd half we controlled the game and saw it out. I must assume this is the Toulouse second team as they seemed well off the pace.

I would like to see Chair, Dembele and Poku all together, with Dembele in the middle of the three to see what that's like.
We need Frey and another like him. Considering we did not have him today, the team did very well and looked much better. Dunne at RB is a must, and if he cannot play there, then Mbengue can cover if Morrison and Cook are in the middle. Good to have options. But we need a first-team LB and a number 9 who is fast as the season starts in only a few weeks.

EDB has not been mentioned, I assume he only just went on his holidays as the loan as only just ended. I notice there was no run out for Richards, as well as the club carefully avoids being sued for £1m for mismanaging his mental health. As I said, he will be a DS regular.

People dropping Field and / or Varane on the evidence of a pre season friendly is bonkers.

People promoting Tuck on the evidence of a nothing game which is a friendly knock about is a little MAD.

The boy has shown promise but proper championship football games do require experience and know how and also young players also need testing of how they respond to a hostile crowd.

Only then, can younger players regularly replace more experienced pros.

I think these friendlies show a lot of players showcasing their potential talents and hopefully with players such as Tuck, they can attract lower league clubs to take a punt on them as loan signings.

We beat Toulouse on an awful pitch but only a week ago, we got annihilated by a second tier Spanish team.

I know we as fans can get a little excited or a lot despondent but a sense of realism required, I feel.

Both Field and Varane are very important for ourselves. And the criticism of both not being forward thinking, who is to say they cannot be coached by the new man to do so, if required.

EDB was playing for Walsall this week.

Agree about Bennie, I haven't seen anything to suggest he's going to be good enough.

Celar is a waste of space.

Zan Celar, Celar
Whatever will be will be
He scored from a penalty
Zan Celar, Celar

That could be a song to sing (with a slight change for penalty) for Celar if he actually produces his Swiss League form.

I agree, it wasn't a good penalty though. I thought the idea of the stutter was to send the keeper in one direction and then shoot the other way.

I didn't see the match, just the highlights, but a big improvement on last week, Dunne at right back was a big change.

As for those advocating not selecting Varane or Field, the Championship is a physical league and one of those two will be needed and in some games, both.

I still want to see another centre forward signed, because we know Frey is prone to injury.

Agree 100% on Field and Varane. In ideal work you only need one in the eleven. But our ball retention in rest of side is so poor, that we need to players like this to win it back. We can still do well with these 2.

Are We Going Toulouse? Match Thread on 21:21 - Jul 18 by Wilkinswatercarrier

You can not play progressive front foot football with Field AND Varane in the same team. Last season showed it didn't work. Today, you saw how we could play.

Field and Varane are not our better players, they are destroyers, and good at it. To win games you need to score so we need the ball going forward not sideways and backwards. It will be one or the other. If they both play it will mean it's gone horribly wrong again.

I would say winning matches IS working. If you're too attacking you end up with Norwich City - shed load of goals but only one more point than us. Your theory isn't supported by the evidence of when we actually won matches. Definitely scope to open out play when other teams tire and abandon the ultra high press but if you're too open from the start you get ripped apart, teams just play through you.

That doesn't mean I advocate playing sideways and backwards all the time. But that's not just down to Varane and Field it's also down to not always having people who can hold the ball up, so playing safely and not always having an outlet. I think with Poku AND Smyth and a fit Chair we've got more of an outlet.

Chair loves QPR and I hope to see him spend the rest if his career at the club.

He has an excellent work rate, and apart from last season, a good fitness record.

He can score and create chances, so I would like him to adopt a more central role to play as a No.10 or drop deeper to bring the ball out of midfield on a regular basis.

I think that there are places in the Team for both (Field & Varane) of them playing together.......

As for last nights game.....I never saw it live but watched the highlights which tbh were pretty poor so I cannot comment on the performance of the players and I would not want to. BUT, I am very pleased with the result, the boys need to improve their confidence, not sure what sort of side Toulouse put out there (Was it a trial match for them, did they take it seriuosly, what was the Managers plans and so on). Looking at it purely from our side it was the result we needed, shocked at some of the Team selections but I do not know the coaches plans overall - for sure he wants to see the players, etc in a game situation but I was still shocked at the Team selection. Lot of comments about the pitch, from the poor highlights I thought it was not green but it was flat & even and not a bobbly pitch so no real objections from me.

Looking forward to seeing a better viewing of the next match against Cardiff which should be very interesting.

Why would you be shocked at the team selections? Pre season is always like this. Also Stephan is finding out about the players and how they can fit into his style of play so there's a bit more experimentation than usual.

The pitch was rough, slow and bobbly in places. At times players looked like they had a bit of a problem controlling the ball.

I’ve never thought out wide on the left was his best position, I like him more central in a freer role.

It of course depends on the other players available.

This is a properly mental post when Dunne tried to leave in January and Chair’s agent has been trying to get a move for him every window for the last 5 years…

Not sure that’s true about Chair. I’m sure the agent is keeping an eye out because that’s his job and an opportunity for income for him personally as well as his client.

Dunne was in the final year of a contract having only been offered a year previously and his stock had risen. He’d have been mental to not be looking elsewhere. The fact he saw out the season professionally unlike many players is a credit to him and ultimately he’s now here longish term and presumably on a salary he’s worth.

If there is any loyalty to a club among players and managers, it must be a very rare thing. Why should they be loyal? It's their livelihood and career, and in the case of players, a short career at that. They will be ambitious and want to play or manage at the highest level they can achieve. It would be very strange if that were not the case. Unless someone acts like Beale, a snide and a liar, there is nothing wrong with this.

The only loyalty in football is among club fans, and that's as it should be.

I got the impression from QPR+ that Toulouse had a strongish side out but were at an earlier stage in their pre-season, their season not starting until later. I also saw Donnum playing who is a full Norway International if not a regular starter. He used to play for my Norweguan Club Vålerenga, but looked much larger than I remember him like he was just back from the beach.

Playing sideways and back is very much down to Varane and Field. If you have an entire stadium shouting 'turn' at a player that implies that they don't and keep going backwards.

Looking forward to seeing Morgan, Tuck or Vale in that 8 role this season.

I doubt it's the entire stadium. It wasn't me, for instance. If you've tried a few passes early on and they don't stick and come bombing back over your head or you look up and there's no-one to pass to so you get caught in possession you're less likely to want to turn into trouble. I don't think our negative play at times was down to two players so I'd look for a whole team solution. But obviously you're entitled to your opinion.
