At work today we have a few lads that are Gills... and they are absolutely over joyed with Gareth

That is now 16 games unbeaten, and last night tanked Chesterfield 4-1

To a man they are saying he has got them organised, all pulling in the same direction and working their socks off

OK it's Lg 2 and a lower standard than the championship... but the above should be the basics in any division...

So what happened here? Was it a matter of respect ? The players just didn't?

Really happy for Gareth, but it makes me wonder, what goes on with us sometimes

A few years ago just before he joined us the insurance guys we use here at work came in to meet us and one of their brothers played for Wycombe. He said that GH was by far the best man-motivator he had ever worked for.

I just think he works well at that level but just seemed out of his depth in higher divisions..

I'm pleased for him. This was his dream job and it was really tough seeing him go through what he went through here.

Agree with CCJ. He is a lower league manager, a very good one i would say. But the higher up the pyramid you go, you jeed more strings to your bow and he was sadly out of his depth at QPR. Wish him well at Gillingham.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

it was sad what happened to him here but he's not the only one to have struggled at QPR, good to see him doing well

It's quite similar to King Warnock..... unfortunately for him the Premiership was just a step too far and "needing to die fer three firkin points" doesn't sit well with Julio Geordio

Wish nothing but success for GA.
A lovely fella who is a Hoops man.

Cherish and enjoy life.... this ain't no dress rehearsal

What happened here was he walked into a vipers nest and sadly didn't have the tactical nous to get around that (something Marti did).

A mixture of things really, a big step up, trying to completely change style of play, players not suited to his style, players unhappy probably a bit of an undercurrent against him.

Pleased it is going so well, as he took a risk and some flak to leave Shrewsbury and take the job in Kent.

Just out of his depth - simple as. Happens in many different businesses, just not in public.Wish him well.

Really happy for him and it must be a great dressing room. Beat a good Chesterfield team 4-1 last night, but with 30% possession 😬. Style of play was always going to be the issue and hope gets a promotion this season.

I’ve got a Shrewsbury supporting friend who remembers him less fondly, but like with us, it might be more about the club than the man.

Reminds me of Roy Hodgson doing a brilliant job at Fulham and then really struggling at Liverpool. Hodgson was brilliant at putting together incredibly organised, disciplined and fit sides, getting them to over-achieve with everyone pulling in the same direction. Going to Liverpool, a club in flux at the time which had a host of bigger names and egos to contend with, and really struggled.

So pleased for him - He is a decent manager albeit at a lower level.

Unfortunately we had to many ego's and a poor dressing room when he came to us and perhaps tried to change things to quickly. I am still amazed that Marti managed to turn us around and keep us up.

Will never forget him trying to run of a broken leg for us against Luton.

Most teams play long ball in lower leagues which does not work in the Championship and the increase in class of players and manager.

It was never gonna work out for him here. That squad he took over was toxic.

Unfortunately he was out of his depth with us but glad he's doing well and his reputation is restored.

I just think half the players he took on here, had extremely high egos and they saw themselves above the likes of Ainsworth and many simply could not give a t*ss about the club.

I think they saw the haka and the guy on the touchlines dressed up like he was about to go clubbing...

They downed tools, faked injuries, etc ..

Clearly he has something if he has the players onside..

It's probably because the higher up the league you go the more spoilt bastard footballers there are. I'm very happy for Gareth!

Yeah I'd say this is about the size of it.

I would have loved to have played for a manager such a Gareth, but it was clear that the likes of Willock didn't want to (and he wasn't the only one).

Good on ya Gareth for coming back from the mess at our gaff

Have mentioned on here before but he lives locally to me and I see him around every now and then. He's always happy to have a chat - pub. gym, petrol station, whatever.
Saw him in a boozer about a week after he left us and he was very pragmatic, and recognised that the Rangers fans love him as a player/bloke, and that the managerial experience shouldn't tar his reputation with the fans.
I was gutted when he was appointed as our manager cos you could see exactly what would happen.
Really happy for him that it's working out at Gillingham. Top man (as he himself always says)

Glory hunter, me
