The manager can't explain it, apparently.

Anyone with any ideas?

Are there any other jobs people are doing where they get paid for a full shift while putting in the work for a quarter of the time (and no refunds)?

Frigging hell that Dembele is a master of it isn't he!? Comes on, looks like he's taking game by scruff of neck, even looked like he was demanding to take the penalty (get stuffed matey, bound to blaze it wide!) then roundabout 15mins into his stint he literally evaporates. AWOL. Gone. No sign of him. Thing is, this is rapidly looking like his M.O. for every game.
Now, bit unfair to dig him out today as they were all off the boil except RND but once Chair and Poku get fit I feel Dembele could find himself well down the pecking order.

I suppose it's a bit like the small number of posters who are all over every thread when we play badly or lose but are nowhere to be seen when we win.

What - like those tedious bores who clog up a perfectly reasonable thread by playing the man and not the ball rather than saying something interesting about it?

Strange match, totally agree played very well for 20mins and pretty poor for the rest. Just about worth a draw.

To answer my own thread/question, or rather not answer it, I'm flummoxed. Either way, this is at least the third time this has happened this season already. I don't know whether it's a lack of fitness, application, dedication, or something else. It would be nice if, just occasionally, the manager or an odd player had some light to shed on it.

Pro football must be about the worst value for money product out there.

SE as you have made the comparison, do you ever had a bad day at work? Days when you are feeling sluggish or mildly off colour or unwell. Times when you are not at 100%, not thinking clearly or lacking in inspiration?

Apart from all that, football as well as some other sports are different; You have an opponent who is doing everything they can to cause you problems to ruin and frustrate your performance. Then you have a referee who may be contributing to all this by stopping you several times, just when you start to do something positive and thereby handing the initiative back to your opponent. On top of all that you have a boisterous mob who cheer wildly for your opponent whilst berating and abusing you for being on their patch.

In short, it's not easy, nay, virtually impossible, to be excellent at all times.

We just have to keep doing the work to improve and get closer to it, more often.

Yeah, there are plenty of jobs in tech like that.

People have written books and blogs on the subject.

https://emaggiori.com/employed-in-tech-for-years-but-almost-never-worked/

Like every industry, there are hard workers too but a lot of people get by just turning up everyday, saying yes to their bosses, attending meetings, rarely making decisions and generally concentrating on a side gig instead.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

My first post !!

I was at the game. We struggled with their directness in the 1st half. They were only ever going to score from a set piece and we should have known that yet we switched off. Better from us in the 2nd half, but our forwards weren't on it either. A few good chances missed. Still, to get an away point at a ground we never do well at when we played like this... well, I'll take it.

It's Championship football, no team can be on it for 90 mins, every game, especially away. It's how you respond to it that defines the best sides. Roll on the next game.

I switch off at work all the time, I'm just not so exposed publicly for doing it.

I don’t think it’s just this season and it’s not just one player. We just have some extreme outliers at times.

Whilst Dembele might have won us the game, once he stopped - he really stopped. Especially tracking back - but he’s not the only one, and in mitigation we know that’s what he does and so does Julien by now. He’s a good sub for 15-20mins at the end of a game when you are chasing it.

One player aside - it’s also got a lot to do with who we are playing, their tactics our own consistency, fitness and basic bloody standards. If your teammate is in trouble you help out.

I also find the limited periods of playing well very annoying but it’s been going on for so long, I just assume it will happen again unless something more fundamental changes. I’m largely immune to it now - it’s why we nearly always end up mid-table, with a lingering fart, smelling of relegation in the car home.

Less talented teams with more consistency and better application across every game regularly tend to finish above us.

We should also be doing much better defensively for 90mins with a dedicated defence coach but he was watching the Golf and not at the game.

Having said all that -10 points from 12 is not a bad return and that augurs well for now. Whilst the consistency is a challenge, there’s more competency being applied with the playing resources we have. 7:1 will never leave the memory bank but we have reacted better than I think most expected.

I thought we were really good in that 20 minute spell though and should have been enough to win us the game

The way we played in that spell gives me a lot of hope for the rest of the seasn, when we are good we are a really good side to watch

Having taken 10 points from 12 I too demand to know why we aren't dominating every minute of every game. And who were those other players on the pitch, some of them didn't even appear to playing for QPR, ridiculous.

Sheff Wed had done their homework and stifled us. They got a lucky goal, and so did we.

Playing Bannon as a left-sided CB when in possession (but not when out of possession) of the ball was a masterstroke. Vale, who was on that side, was not wise to it and did not press him; he had free rein to pass it about, and with Bannon, we know that means Sheffield Wednesday are always in the game.

I have seen Bannon play a sweeper role in front of the back line before, but never that deep, it was clever as if the oppo team does not press all the time it allows Bannon to build from the back with balls over the top, which means if your defence is not watching, you get done.

Great play by the defence stopped that from happening, as they really tried to catch us out here.

We played well for 20 mins when we pressed them hard all the time and thats Sheff Wed weakness, which we only challenged for 20 mins, and then we dropped off and let em back in control of the game. Other managers will see that, and I expect them to get spanked every week now.

In addition, our passing was abysmal that day, strong five yard passes together was as bad as Wed who were the same.

It's hard to press all the time with Madsen not coming forward, hence Varane was subbed as he was on his own in the middle there. I suppose Madsen playing 6 is better than Madsen playing 8, but really there isn't much in it.

To put it in context, Bannon, who is older than Madsen, was able to get up and down the pitch time and again, sometimes starting from the left centre back position, if he can do it, then no other player in the Champ has an excuse not to. I am not even talking about skill level, just effort to get up and down the pitch.

zzzzzzzzzz

Think we are still finding our way, but importantly got back into the game and more importantly 4 games in a row unbeaten with 10 out of 12 points gained. Take us back to Coventry and Watford games where we were basically all over the place it looked worrying, the improvement is massive. Still feel our continued progress will be built on our home form and making LR a tough place to come for away teams.

As Chair loses that bit of pace needed to leave Defenders standing I'd love to see him evolve into that Bannan type of playmaker who can dominate games from deep, making him harder to shackle.
