The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 18:00 - Jun 6 by PlanetHonneywood | Fella, we all know the development of talent has been woeful for decades. It doesn't need restating! My point: before we all get excited, then let's at least wait for something tangible. I'm all for following the development of players and praising the set-up when it delivers. Indeed, the DS win was the best £3 spent following the Rangers, but as I replied to another poster, signing kids for the DS shouldn't be 'front page' in my view; there's such a way to go between there and the First XI. I also asked the other bloke: Do other clubs make such a splash signing DS players? Maybe they do. As with the DS Cup win and a few players breaking into the starting XI, when there's something to shout about then, by all means: shout, shout, let it all out! |
Nourry can’t take credit for the DS Cup win. Most of those players have been here for 3 or 4 years. However, I really like the investment he’s putting into the DS squad and it’s exactly the direction I like to see from the DoF. He’s thinking long term first and foremost. I can really see this paying off in the next couple of years.

Most of the eleven have been here for 12 months. I think it’s a 6:5 split. The 6 signed under Norrie: Wilkie, McDowell, Morgan, Esqueridinha, Bennie, Dillon

My maths isn’t great, but 6 from 22 isn’t a 6:5 split!

Oh you mean the squad? I was looking at the 11 who started the final. I know that 2 of the 4 subs that came on were also signed in last 12 months. So 8:7. But ok if you look at 22 I doubt most had been signed in last 12 months.

What's really good is the mixture of players in the DS. We have 18/ 19-year-old guys who have been at the club for 10 years, such as Tuck, Kolli, Sutton, etc, who are breaking through. Then released Academy players like Morgan and McDowell being picked up. We have foreign players Bennie, Dillon and Esquerdinha. Finally players such as Wilke, Halliday, and O'Brien from elite youth teams being signed. A wide net means we have a better chance of catching some gems. Totally agree that in the next couple of years, we could see a real benefit of this approach. Mentally though I've already written off this coming season, I think the target is survival, but I keep saying 2026/27 is when we could dramatically improve as the DS lads are promoted and have adjusted to 1st team football.

The thing I keep reading about Stéphan is that he promotes development from DS to the first team, so that would seem to make sense at least if he is who we finally appoint.

I think any manager that comes in will have to agree to promote DS players. The way the club is being structured is all being geared to having a conveyor belt of youth players being given a chance. There is absolutely no point having a good DS if they don't get a chance in the 1st team. All the youngsters signing have all said the same thing 'a clear path to the 1st team' was a big reason for joining. Play them and we'll be able to sign even better youngsters who we can sell.

The club have been trying to push this approach for years. Didn't Les and Warburton fall out partly because Les wanted him to promote players from the development squad, but Warburton didn't think they were good enough. The approach succeeds or fails on the quality of the players in the development squad.

"A clear path to the first team" is the Comms team writing the statement for the youngsters in line with the corporate message. But it's still a good message.

Great points and possibly our future is homegrown with a mix of sensible purchases. I have always felt that that the building of the training facilities and promoting QPR to youngsters as a good step up to playing top level football will pay dividends.
The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 10:44 - Jun 9 with 2080 views | aston_hoop | We are being linked with Brighton right back Odel 'Chariots' Offiah. Was on loan at Blackpool last season where he was considered a stand out player in their team. 22 years old, fits the kind of model we'd be looking at I guess.

Blackpool was where Dembele was on loan at the season before last too. We must have some hook up with them. Strange if two seasons running we sign their standout player they had on loan. But he’s a full back, so I’m open to it! Our record with Brighton isn’t great, mind.

Yes his uncle is Martin. Out of contract at Brighton where he made his debut as sub replacing Taylor Richards.

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 11:44 - Jun 9 with 1874 views | Pdog | It seems we’ve got two clear funnels operating: A) Pick up 16-18 yr olds released from PL academies on free, develop in DS. Morgan, Mcdowell, Dyke, etc. B) Target British players who’ve excelled in a L1 loan from their high profile parent club, with a view to stepping into 1st team - usually involving a fee (Dembele, Morrison, Vale, this lad etc.)

Both of which I like a lot. You have to supplement it with some Championship pragmatism though - both experience wise, and physicality wise. It was the big mistake we made last summer. All 10 signings were the same profile and it didn't mould together into a team.

Totally. That’s where funnel C fell short: Scour the Eurotrash backwaters for a slightly maturer unknown and dropping a more serious wedge (wage/fee). High risk / High reward. For every Nardi or Varane, there’s a Celar, Madsen, Santos. As these are likely 1st teamers, if the balance is off or they dont settle, results suffer fast. This time round we need a better mix of attributes: experience, physicality, team fit etc. Not just punts with potential.

Fingers crossed. Looks a beast, who can play a bit, and should be in our price range. We are desperate for CBs.

Not going to defend the Santos signing, but it's a possibility that Celar was just about settling and showing some promise when he got injured and Madsen took even longer to settle. I'm prepared to cut them a little slack and see how they start the new season. I am a little more concerned about how Dembele fits in now, tbh.

I also remember when a rumour constituted at least a link or some powder puff tabloid piece. Now “it’s being linked” constitutes Jeff on X has said so
