But if you sell Varane while he's in demand, and make a 4M profit - that the model. Obviously you hold onto Madsen and you hope the green shoots at the end of the season continue into next, that he becomes saleable in 12 months time - then you don't lose out on him financially. There are risks to this model, especially in the initial phases, because the quality of player is lesser/unknown. This risk is reduced as you can afford to spend a little more on better quality players as you go through phase two, three and so on, of the model.
Our problem is that we are still on phase one, which, as I said, is the riskiest element of the model. The reason for this is because we have refused to sell our best players at the peak of their value. Chair and Willock are the two most recent examples of this, but there have been numerous others; BOS, Austin (first time around) and so on. This problem is acerbated by us throwing money at players with no re-sale value every so often as we get a sniff of promotion.
I don't know (m)any fans who are happy to wallow in the Championship. But it has to be done properly and not dash off script the first time we win three games in a row. | | | |

How on earth would a player who cost us less than 400 k suddenly be worth 10M after an at best 'ok' season? This time next year he could just as easily be worth 400k again , or injured and unsaleable. When are we going to learn from our past mistakes? Those appearances for Sheff might have saved his career. Otherwise he could be yet another 21 year old with only a handful of professional games to his name. These young footballers need to play competitive league games.
This is another reason I hate Chelsea with their rack 'em and stack 'em attitude to kids.

Said the self same thing the other day.
This type of thing should almost be a footnote, not being treated as the club giving us the winning lottery numbers. There's so much between here and them making it, that we've really got nothing to see here, just yet.
Can't help thinking that most players are going to hold off until they know who the manager is. Which is down to Kim Jung/QPR...again! |  |
