Premier League Cup Final match thread 14:51 - May 13 with 24751 views | Esox_Lucius | Play the strongest team we possibly can or reward the players who have got the team this far? I know at this level it supposed to be all about the coaching and not the results but for a one off like this I am hoping it is the strongest team in an effort to win the cup, along the lines of... 1. Salomon 2. Putman 3. Esquerdinha 4. McDowell 5. Murphy 6. Bennie 7. Tuck 8. Morgan 9. Sutton 10. Kolli 11. Dillon Subs. Clark, Talla, Manufor, Petrie, Vaughan and others. I am not as familiar as many on here as it is normally to far to travel for their games so I only have around 5-6 games to base my team on. Please feel free to criticise/ replace/ tell me to never darken your door again etc.

Premier League Cup Final match thread on 23:05 - May 15 by Lblock | If he's proud of his mentoring of Paul Furlong (assuming he did) then yep, great, I'm with that. As has been noted - his tenure brought us nothing like this and nothing like the breakthroughs we're seeing now. I know Kolli gives him credit, and he was too young before, but I just can't equate the current success with my old mate Benny. Now Paul Furlong.... love that geezer and absolute props to him this evening |
Kolli, Sutton and Eze all gave 'your mate Benny' credit for being here. And they're just the ones we've heard from. He was in charge during Chair's development too, and others like Manning, Seny... Eze has already saved us once financially and may do so again this Summer. £30 million + that we would never have had without Ramsey here. Feel free to list all the great youth team achievements/development before he got here. It was a fu*king mess for a good couple of decades. It was time to move on but going out of our way to denigrate him when he has clearly made some big contributions is poor form. If the new regime are building and improving on it all then fan-fkin-tastic. Anyway, what a great night. Really hope to see some of these boys contributing in the years to come. Hopefully some these players push on and get a chance in some pre season friendlies. Impressed with Morgan and Tuck in the middle. Both full backs were good and the centre backs solid. Dillion worked his socks off for the team. Haven't read all the posts but wondered why Kolli wasn't available.

Premier League Cup Final match thread on 23:39 - May 15 with 1901 views | MrSheen | Great fun and games from an unusual perch next to the away dugout in the west Paddock. What hasn’t been mentioned yet is that Tuck seemed to dislocate his shoulder celebrating the second goal. It took a while putting it back, and his refusal to take a step off the pitch annoyed the ref but infuriated the Jason Roy look-alike among the dozen or so Brentford coaches. There followed at lot of abuse of “Little Man” and some comments back about what a tinpot club we are - presumably he doesn’t remember their days in Division 3. Sombrero Peter even got ejected I think for taking the piss too hard, but after someone threw a towel at him at 3-1, he slunk off to the tunnel. [Post edited 16 May 0:26]

I thought Kolli didn't look 100% in the semis and was subbed at half-time. He was running but seemed to be avoiding running flat out. Wondering if he had a slight strain and needed to protect it?
Premier League Cup Final match thread on 23:42 - May 15 with 1882 views | Hunterhoop | Not much to add to everyone else’s words. It was a hugely enjoyable evening. There was only one football team out there and that was us. Paul Furlong should be proud of what he has achieved. Brentford were simply bigger boys playing long ball stuff. I would like to say something about Murphy, the captain, though. He is small, I doubt he’ll make it at our level (I doubt most of them will unfortunately due to size), but I though he showed an excellent first touch (like Tuck, who is superb on the ball), great awareness, great composure for his goal, and a superb mentality. His first corner he kicked the ground well before the ball, hurt himself and saw it land on the bounce at the near post. People in the stands laughed. He finished the night with a goal, an assist, and the captain lifting the trophy. That shows incredible mental strength. That boy has the right minerals. He may not make it with us, but I can see him being a lovely player for a lucky club in League 2 in the next few years. Others take the limelight but he shouldn’t go under appreciated. Big night, and he turned up.

I wondered what had happened to Tuck . I wasnt sure if he was ill or something until I saw them doing something to his shoulder blade . I did also wonder how many coaches Brentford had . The longer the game went on , the more appeared on the touchline . I thought it was only a matter of time before that big eared gum chewing hobbit who looks after the first team appeared down there . Not sure some of them covered themselves in glory either tonight [Post edited 15 May 23:51]

Fair play also to Putnam (?) for dealing with Brentford’s only real threat on their left wing. I kept expecting him to flop down for a penalty, but he played his part and let those in the centre play theirs.

Yes, I thought Putman was excellent tonight. Brentford's main plan seemed to be to hoof it up their left towards the big no7 but Putman didn't give him any joy , certainly in the 1st half.

Dislocation celebrating the second from my seat. Refused to go off having lost Bennie. Brentford coaches whined about him not leaving the pitch so they could start with a man advantage. You’re supposed to be coaching young players, you glory/bonus hunting shitbags.

Yes, there was a fair amount of housery on both sides but theirs seem to project from their bench which is poor really. As you say it’s ultimately about development. I also think there was pressure on them , the coaching staff , to beat us and beat us well tonight and they fell well short . [Post edited 15 May 23:57]

Completely agree. Very impressed with Putnam. His understanding of his body shape and his positioning meant even though he was outgunned physically he rarely let a cross into the box, and that was with little protection from Petrie. He did a great job.

Premier League Cup Final match thread on 22:31 - May 15 by HammersmithR | What a great night in the Bush. We played really well. It was a pretty open game but we could easily have got another 2 or 3. Then had a couple of decent chances as well. They were physical and looked a lot bigger but we played all the football. Was very impressed with Wilkie, Tuck, the Brazilian and Morgan but they all played their part. The future looks bright. Poor support from Brentford. Shows the difference between us and them. No way would they have had this level of support at their place. Some of their players / coaching staff were properly rattled by our support. Anyway, the 3rd goal allowed them to sneak out from their big day out to get the 237 back to Twickenham. |
The majority of their fanbase is plastic. They probably had no idea this game was happening.

Brentford fans blaming… 1) The fact this squad played a game to extra-time on Monday - plausible 2) Exceptionally bouncy pitch, not up to GTech standards - wah wah wah.

Great post 1bobbyhazell in response to the boneheaded post that clearly took great delight in denigrating/speaking ill of Ramsey's achievements in also bringing younger players through during his tenure. The evidence, by way of examples that you have provided, is incontrovertible, yet someone sees it fit to pour scorn on said person. All rather sad, in light of what the youngsters achieved tonight To that list, you can add Salamon, Putman and Tuck who have been at this club from very young. Previous players would include the much-maligned Lumley (200+ professional games) and Os Kakay (involved in nearly 100 games for us). It remains to be seen if any of the players, Kolli excepted, involved tonight will make as many appearances as the last two that I have listed: majority being at Championship level. I wish them all the best as they try to forge a career in the game. [Post edited 16 May 8:40]

Basically said we were happy to play the back line in the second half…..clearly must have missed us playing them off the park and Sutton scaring the bejesus out of them and the number of times we went forward and the times we tried but were fouled. They’re basically telling their fans they were unlucky when they weren’t. |

Halliwell on the bench is himself a decent keeper from the little I've seen of him too, so makes sense to get Salamon out for the year. |

They're very good observations on Murphy, Hunter. He's had a stand out season in many ways and has always played to a high level in the games I've seen. But I agree with you, he probably won't make the step up at QPR and we could even see his departure this summer given the new expectations on the youngsters. There shouldn't be many who played in the final who won't be around next season. It's clear that the club is seeing higher-quality youngsters coming through now and is also attracting better players to the DS like Alex Wilkie, Esquerdinha, and Cian Dillon now. We should expect a few to filter through to the senior squad in time.
