Things would be simpler if you took the need to interpret intent out of it.

Just make it:

'Any connection between the ball and the hand, wrist, or forearm is a foul. It does not matter if it deliberate or not'

Makes it consistently even then doesn't it.

Never been a fan of the idea of making any contact with the arm/hand a pen. Can imagine it could lead to situations where a player try's to deliberately smash it onto the hand of a defender just to get a pen. I do feel you need intent. That said, I always think it should be a penalty if a defender trys to control the ball and it bounces up and hits their arm. For me that's just poor play and while not their intention to handball, I'd give it. You'd only be exempt in my book if your hands are in a natural position and nothing you could realistically do to avoid contact with the ball.

I think if a player makes an attempt to block a shot, as what happened yesterday, even if the hands are down next to them, if it hits the arm and blocks the shot, it should be a pen. If the defender didn't deviate his body or make an attempt to block the ball and it hit him like it did - so basically couldn't get out the way - then it wouldn't be a pen in my book. Trying to block the shot is what warranted the penality.

I don’t know why they don’t design a shirt without arms and you just keep your arms inside the shirt itself.

Make the shirt elasticated enough to move the arms relatively freely and the player could justifiably ‘expand’ in situations like last night to protect your goal without conceding a penalty. Player goes round the keeper, you expand yourself on the goal line, player tries to run by you, you expand to block his path.

So many positives to an armless shirt and renders VAR and the ref useless.

The only potential downside I can see is if they make the keeper wear one as well.

With all the technology available, I don't know why football hasn't adopted outfits like they wear in Fencing. Have an electronic current going through the footballers' long-sleeve shirt sleeves, if the ball hits the arm/hand at a distance of say more than six inches from the testicular region, a flashing red alarm sounds and lo, a penalty is awarded.

Just finished my referee certification. 30 min tutorial on the handball laws. Penalty correct decision.

However referees being on top of this at my level a different ball game(pun intended)

They also showed clips of broadcasters running their mouths off about a decision and clearly don’t know the laws of the game. Pen all day long a good example.

You'd get players deliberately hitting an opponent in the hope it might catch part of the arm.

If the arm is by the side, it becomes how much of the ball hit the arm. We already have plenty of 'not enough for a penalty or 'the goalkeeper must be stronger' moments. We don't need more debates that take ages on VAR.

I think we should go back to deliberate handball.

'You'd get players deliberately hitting an opponent in the hope it might catch part of the arm'

I'd be happy with this to be honest. Would add a new dimension to the game. Can't see many scenarios where it would be successful for those trying it.

I think it was Norf who said it a while ago, other sports and codes are de regulating the rules to make it simpler for referees and fans.

Maybe not as extreme as what i'm suggesting, but there should be some rowing back.

It probably is right but you can be sure the same incident in a few weeks will not be given

Same as that Palace goal at the weekend, by letter of law correct but mutiple examples of the same incident given as a goal last season and will be again as the season goes on.

Thats part of what makes VAR so pointless, you can't ever get consistency because it's human beings with different intereptations boith reffing the game and doing VAR

I wish they'd just scrap it

You could take this armless shirt design a step further

I think the issue is a penalty is too harsh a punishment when it’s not clearly intentional. An indirect FK wouldn’t be always ideal either but think it’s a fairer result for the ‘crime’.

Any suggestions that things might be engineered for Leeds to get a nice home win so sky can gush over their amazing fans and show them singing I predict a riot are of course unfounded.

Leeds fans in the Don Revie Stand brandished a banner with the question: "Premier League, have you missed us?"

Really good point. A huge part of why we have so many debates about these decisions isn’t just because they’re inconsistent and confusing, but because they have such a huge influence on the outcome of a game. A yellow card or a free kick is often a pretty minimal punishment; a red card or penalty is massive. Cricket and tennis, even rugby to a certain extent, have fewer issues with VAR because their use of it is less about subjective interpretation, and because the decisions they reach are less likely to turn entire games on their head.

Not sure how you fix that - maybe some kind of sin bin, but I suspect that’d create more issues than it solves. What’s very clear though is that VAR, in the way it’s implemented, hasn’t made refereeing more consistent or less contentious: it’s doing the opposite. FIFA and the FA need to go back to the drawing board with the whole thing.

A penalty in so many instances is too much of a game changer.

That’s what needs to be addressed.

Thought it was wrong at the time and on one replay it definitely looks like it is while another suggests maybe not. Both Neville and Carragher adamant it was a pen which surprised me a bit so what do we know?

Well Carragher is a die hard red, so no surprise there and Neville would be screaming blue murder if given against Man Utd.

VAR is made for TV audiences with its inconsistent decisions.
Eze's free kick and now this nonsensical handball decision's on the opening weekend

Before VAR: TV sports shows had hours of airtime contesting ref's decisions.

Looks a pen to me although it wouldn't have been given years ago

I said it in 2014 (?) on Zamora Day. You win the play-off and you should be able to choose if you want to go up. I would have rather had another season in the Championship with a new manager than a Premier League season under Redknapp. Thats not hindsight btw. We should have been given the chance to pat Derby on the head and say off you go to the Promised Land. And pat Redknapp on the head and simply say off you go - don’t care where just make it far away.

What a bizarre idea! Why play competitive football at all in that case?

Anyone see the penalty Leeds got? on 15:48 - Aug 19 with 579 viewskensalriser

Not really sure what the big deal is here.

It's clearly a penalty according to the laws because it was deliberate, ie he knowingly moved towards the ball. It doesn't matter where his arm was and neither does it matter what might have happened in other games.

It must be August.

Clearly we all want to get back to the top table for the money it brings

However I see things like this and the Eze free kick decision via their stupid cameras and I think sod that.
It’s so boring and predictable when Sky are in town

Be great to win promotion
Take the money and run back to the crazy Championship

Agree with this all day long. No interest in the Premiershit whatsoever

The disallowed goal for Eze and Leeds penalty gave Sky something to talk about. Their Super Sunday games were boring with just the one goal scored by Arsenal on the goalline. Monday night football was also naff with just a late penalty bringing up just two goals in three games for Sky.

Agree on this, I read a lot of this thread before I saw the incident and on that basis I expected it to be a little more nuanced but he clearly moves towards the ball and did so arm first, even if it was by his side

The only complicating factor for me is that the ball deflects and then bounces up onto Tarkowski’s arm. I’m not sure how he could have avoided it but probably just bad luck.

Been saying this since it came in. All VAR has done is slightly altered the post-match chat in the pub from ref to VAR - but at great expense both in terms of funds and more importantly for the enjoyment of the game.

Fck VAR
