Presume there is no reason he can't still come on loan though?

And that as they say was that. We gave it a really good go.

I asked a question. Do you know the answer?

The right decision as it looks like Southampton were holding out for big money as they had no financial need to sell him this window. If he doesn’t play much the rest of the year then we can strike a much better deal in January.

The answer is only emergency loans are allowed outside a transfer window and Edwards would not qualify as one.

Four months is a long time in football and by the time the next window opens we might have got a deal struck with Southampton.

We might need a keeper by then, improved offers could arrive for Varane, we might have picked up a few more injuries in one position, the club might receive offers for Madsen, who at 6ft 4ins tall, is head and shoulders above most of our squad.

But what if there's something strange in the neighbourhood. Who ya gonna call? Ron Edwards!

Agree

Feels a little bit like Arsenal trying to sign a striker to keep the fans happy for several years. Lots of speculation, some low offers but no one through the door until this year - and now he looks a little off the pace.

Cross fingers for Jan but as mentioned above, maybe we will have other priorities by then and the existing signings will have settled in/down (yes, Mbonkers - that’s you).

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Obviously I wanted Edwards but splashing endless cash on him would have made me somewhat uncomfortable that Nourry was just playing Football Manager. This looks sensible to me; we appear to have made a decent offer, but won't be hold to ransom.

Agree. I love him, but wouldn't have wanted to see us get caught up in that Sunderland Will Grigg situation.

Well if they continue to not play him in the league, his value is only going one way.

Part of me is quite glad he hasn't signed. Became a bit tedious going with my daughter who was far more interested in swooning over sexy Ronnie than anything else going on on the pitch. Now we'll see what she's made of.

Have to say that the cynic in me hints that the whole episode maybe was orchestrated by our CEO and his PR operation all along. In other words, get fans on board on back of heartening win by apparently showing intent on Edwards but also apparently demonstrating an example of financial discipline absent in recent times.

This might be a tad harsh - but it occurred to me.

With Nourry's track record, it has to be considered as a possibility.

We'll find out in time.

One thing that saddens me about this, is what it means for the distance between Southampton and us.

The gap between Premiership and Championship has always been huge but now it feels like the top two or three in the Championship are also well beyond our reach.

I'm no Nourry fan, but I think once you start thinking this way there is literally nothing he can do that is right, and that can't be healthy? On the face of it, all seems sensible. Fernandes would have carried on bidding until getting his man. Nothing wrong with being in for Edwards, but it has to be a workable price.

If we don't trust him at the moment, then I think that's understandable.

In time, we will, I hope.

In this instance, the only reason that I think it might be true is because Dave Mc says it is.
