Refwatch - Truro City v Rochdale on 17:10 - Sep 13 by isitme | To get out of this league we will have to stack ugly wins at times. Would we have won that type of game last season? |
Indeed. We seem to be getting into a good habit of seeing games out. Steve Parkin’s teams were effective at getting leads and retaining them in a manner where there was little panic. Last week’s win was a lot like that.

Refwatch - Truro City v Rochdale on 17:15 - Sep 13 by jonahwhereru | Have we found our new Grant Holt? He couldn’t resist keeping the referee busy and while Mani isn’t a player who kicks opponents as much as Holt he just finds ways to get booked. Personally I was surprised he hadn’t been subbed by the time he was booked. But that is probably my Dale supporter living in Southend syndrome kicking in a full week ahead. But the lad should be professional enough to avoid a booking. Poor tbh. A team isn’t one player and there is now an opportunity for someone to step. Here is hoping. Still can’t weight to be back at Spotland next week. |
Not just a slim chance, then?

Becoming a bit of a habit.....play well first half but fail to put the game to bed well and truly then struggle as opposition latch on to our shortcomings. Are our subs too late? Or just in effective?

Which games apart from today have we failed to put to bed? In five of our seven wins we’ve scored in the second half. Last week we controlled the game and Braintree played really well, as they appear to have done today before a great comeback by York.

I'd say Altrincham, Sutton and Braintree, plus Truro ( don't see why they can't be included) where we were under a significant amount of pressure in the second half. Add to that the Brackley experiment and I understand why some feel we could go up a gear in the second half. Of course, the very important counter to that view is to point to the league table. We have done really well in winning games when not at our best so far....something we have struggled with recently.

Altrincham we scored a winner after the break and won a pretty even game. Sutton the same. Braintree was the opposition really stepping it up but the game was won. We haven’t played significantly worse in the second half of games, just differently - hence the Parkin comparison to last week and also at Wealdstone. Results indicate however we choose to manage games, it’s working so far as you say. We do need to start taking more chances though, Mani could and maybe should have double figures already. My worry is that the bigger challenges will require capitalising more. Though saying that, we were two goals up on Southend last time we played them…

I watched the Southend game at Wealdstone last week, after we beat the Stones comfortably the week before. They outplayed Southend and the 3-2 score flattered them with a late goal. We shouldn`t need to go into our shell against them. More of a worry is the usual absence of goals from midfield, 3 goals ,including 2 from McBride, who does seem to know where the net is, continues the dearth of midfield goals from last season. Surely East and Gilmour and Tobi A-R should be able to contribute something to the goals required for a team who has aspirations for promotion. With Mani missing, where has Hendo gone? 9 league goals from 9 starts last season.
Refwatch - Truro City v Rochdale on 15:26 - Sep 14 with 2736 views | NorthernDale | The game was poor and no disrespect to Truro, but they are a poor side, who we made them look good in the second half by our negative pass it backwards walking football. We looked disjointed and disorganised at times, and Manni's yellow card was disappointing, I don't know if the performance was due to the Dale flying down, if I correct on the Saturday or McNulty tactical decisions and preferred football style. At least it was a win and points on the board. With Manni missing, I would start with Hendo up front with Rodney, having said that McBride did okay when he came on. [Post edited 14 Sep 15:31]

If we can score 2 goals and be defensively mean then we have a recipe for success. 3 huge Saturdays coming up - Rat a tat tat... Southend / Carlisle / FGR.... We will know a lot more about our promotion credentials after these 3 x Saturdays. Dale have had a dream start to the season, Hoping the feel good factor ramps further come 8pm next Saturday night.

The big 5 in division seem to be making their moves now and I believe that we will need 100+ points to win the league so EVERY game is as important as the ones that we'll play against the big 5.

It's all to do with the tint of your glasses.....I have a different take on our play than you and the other "down-tickers" have, and I will stick with MY view not yours and the usual suspects. Levi for Mani an obvious swap Berkoe for Taryn a possible second based on troubles passim v Scott Morris. This is where BJ’s game management coping with opposition tactics will really be needed, given the way we lost in the playoffs to Southend, i think it’s good we are playing them first up of the big guns. This game won’t define our season but it is a good opportunity to show we are true contenders this season.

Great stats. The only game played between any of the 'Big 5' so far is Southend v York, (Assuming Scunthorpe aren't being counted), which is a strange quirk of the fixture list when we're at matchday 9.

Refwatch - Truro City v Rochdale on 00:16 - Sep 15 with 2062 views | Sandyman | I guess there is a feeling from last season that when we went up against the teams who threatened the play off / promotion places, we mostly bottled it. There was a lack of character when under that sort of pressure and "clout" was unfortunately used as an excuse which wasn't believed. We were weak in those contests and the finger pointed at the manager. We'll see over the next few games how the character / bottle / game management of what is a far better quality team as a whole holds up to such challenges. I hope our current fantastic start to the season (bar one aberration) proves we have the kahunas to succeed in games to come. Over to you, Jim.

Mani and Rodney were well controlled throughout. Tobi and Allarackia produced nothing worthwhile, the defence held out well particularly against the wind in the last half hour. Where was the passing game, esp in the first half? The only players passing forward were EEL and Whatmuff. Ryan East ??? When the subs came on-too late- they showed some life. Feel sorry for the travelling fans. But what the hell- 3 points I suppose. It did look a dubious goal from the angle I saw.

My thoughts entirely re the way Southend play using Scott-Morris. We all remember the shambolic defending down the left hand side when they last played at Spotland. To be fair to BJ I think he realised the ongoing weakness down that flank hence the signing of Pritchard. And in the absence of the latter Kevin Berkoe will be a welcome addition to the squad.

The 'Big 5' are us, FG, Carlisle, Southend and York imo. The games against those teams are huge but it's the points dropped against everyone else that could cost teams and Brackley aside we're doing well at not dropping points against those teams.

It definitely wasn't a dubious goal. If you've seen the angle from behind the goals the Truro defender clatters into his own keeper.

100% On the angle behind the goal you can see the defender actually drags Gordon down and then falls into his keeper on the way down. Gordon nods the empty ball into the empty net. I agree with the commentator that Gordon had a shout for a penalty if he hadn’t put it in.
