Fire up the glossary for the “when fit” statement.
I’m on board with this and have liked Frey since game one when he moved off his marker in the box and scored. Obviously, the issue was/is availability but I think he does a decent job when on the pitch and he can score all sorts of goals.
There’s always murmuring about his lack of pace, (and I’m a big shouter for pace), but he gets about once a head of steam built up. He’s also got a great touch and a fair dose of skill as demonstrated with a bit of keepy up to get him away from defenders last season.
I think he’ll start v Oxford after getting the last 15 on Saturday vs Wednesday (hopefully not injured by Monday)

He stepped up last season when he was our only option and performed very well considering his abilities and limitations.
Perhaps the extra year, his salary is reduced, or even a pay as you play salary, but this means we could also sell him on, or loan if neccessary with option to recall if needed and he is there as cover if needs be perhaps as fourth option then.
Given our financial resources, it makes some sense.
Frey performed above his skill set last season and did a decent job.i think i can see the clubs logic, and despite our seeming success in recruiting strikers this season, its proven very difficult on a consistent basis.

However, buying low and selling for a huge fee (with clauses of course) is our model. So come the summer TW if we're looking at big bucks, then that's the game.
However, the key to this is early identification of the next Kone who's ready to step-up and step-in. Which is what it was always meant to be. Signed Sints for £350k, sold for £2.75m at the same time as buying Sinclair for £600k. Of course, it all started to go nipples north when we sold Sinclair for Dowie, Rowland, and training kit as opposed to an appropriate fee and having his replacement lined up.
Generate income, you can then buy-in better replacements, whom you have identified and lined up in advance, and you are more likely to become a Brentford or Brighton as opposed to a Crewe.
As for Frey, I wonder if there will be a big drop-off with age? Cook looks a shadow currently whereas some blokes you get a tune out of well into their 30s. |  |

The flaw is he then needs replacing and we’re pretty shoite at that.
I’m just wistful for the old days where you stumbled upon a couple of golden nuggets of players and then added to them, set up to make them your stars and, you know, actually tried to win a few things. Can we not dream of adding Handsome Ron, more legs centre mid, a monster keeper or other players to push us to the play offs or beyond?
I get that ambition doesn’t pay the bills but just what has it come to when success is judged by balance sheets?

We don’t sell Kone in January unless we get a ridiculously high offer and circa £10m is nowhere near that. With the expected large sell on clause for Wycombe we’d be lucky to clear a few million profit at that kind of price. |  | | |

I can only think that it might be both continuity and someone who can do a job for us.
Chances are Kone is going to be off in a year or even less, especially if he stays injury free. Finding another nugget like him will be a hard ask... so Frey will step in... not an exact replacement but can do a job for us
We know what we have in Frey... and I think this new up and at 'em approach will suit him more that tikka ticca.
If he is on film star wages then yes would seem a little strange, but if he is on reasonable wages, then it would seem good business

I expect we've spent a fair bit this summer so a new striker would be far more expensive than just renewing Frey's contract. Fine with him being an impact sub and cover for Kone, as others have said.
Furthermore, we have one of the youngest squads in the league so retaining Frey means we have some of that dressing room experience that we're starting to run a bit dry of. | | | |

Fair enough, he's certainly a good squad option. I've said previously that I don't believe we need to tying him down to anything longer than the extra year. In 12 months time, we'll know whether or not Alfie Lloyd or Rayan Kolli have got the chops for this and having Frey as squad player will get us to that point with (hopefully) the minimum of fuss as we know what he brings to the team.
I don't believe he's a long-term solution but he's certainly helpful. He'd be a nightmare for a tiring centreback to face as a second half substitute! And he wins his fair share of headers in both boxes. Injuries and fitness notwithstanding, he's a known quantity and low risk. |  |
