Dembele 15:02 - Oct 2 with 2270 viewsdmm

What do we do with Dembele? I was excited when he came but now, not so much. We know he's got talent but we also know he has real weaknesses. He's not been helped by his stop/start time at QPR so far, partly through injury but also through a lack of form. And I can't help feel he's not a happy lad right now.

He's only 22 and needs games to develop. If we're to see him realise his potential, we'll have to give him a run in the side sooner or later. Either that or move him on.

At the time we got him and Saito, and that first cameo, I thought we had 2 special players on our hands, and if pushed I was more impressed with Dembele. But I think signing him so early was possibly the wrong move, especially now we have Poku to come back. Vale, Saito, Chair, Poku, Smyth and even Rayan, he does seem vulnerable.

You do wonder if the money we spent on Dembele could have gone towards that ball playing centre mid we're crying out for. A positive is, he does still show glimpses of exciting ability, so there is something there, and he's young, so can certainly improve.

Is he strong enough to be a door stop?

He is certainly no worse than Smyth!

Frustrating isn't he.
He comes on as a sub, and with the 15 minutes he has, usually does enough to make you think he is worth a start.
He gets given a start, might give us 10 minutes but then disappears.
He then gets dropped for the next game but looks good as a sub again
Rinse and repeat.
Even his brother looked better than him last night and he's supposed to be the crap one

Retrain him as a goalkeeper?

At the moment I would have him as an impact sub. Up against defenders who are fresh, he will struggle. He isn't strong enough most of the time to get passed them. However, get him up against a fullback who has been in a game for 60 minutes and Dembele's speed and quick feet will cause problems.

Saito whilst not as quick makes up for it by being a tough little so and so and he has very quick football brain and is very busy. Buzzing all over the place trying to make things happen.

Probably just needs a rebrand, someone say he's 'good around the dressing room' or something and he'll be forgiven any errors.

He's a quality player, he's young, he can do things others can't and hopefully he'll get plenty of opportunities to show that this season.

Had a bad injury. Needs time. Needs a confidence boost but overall I think he'll be fine.

Never knowingly right.

We were right to take a punt on bringing in Dembele last season, but maybe he is just really an impact off the bench player for the last 3rd of a match. Players like Saito, Vale and possibly Pokku when he gets fit is likely to be ahead in the pecking order.

Jesus christ... why do we have to jump.on our players like this?

We could be positive about him. Encourage him. There were some good moments yesterday. Ive ssen an awful lot worse that hasnt created a specific thread calling them out.

Why stop now, just when I'm hating it

I'm not sure it's going to work with Dembele here, he has moments in games and can see why they signed him and he does have potential but just not sure how you get him in the team regularly

Watch his lack of effort off the ball and this is why he's getting criticism.

I do think Stephan and team will be watching this and working on how to get it into his game. I remember BOS in his earlier days losing the ball, sitting down and having a picnic on his own. After a while he was tearing back and putting in tackles. Now he's a wingback. I'm not saying Dembele will be a wingback but I am sure this coaching team will show him what he's not doing so well and get more out of him off the ball.

Never knowingly right.

I think he can be worked with,.and wondered if part of the reason he was moved to the right last night was so Julie could supportively get in his ear. He'd started fine and then had a bad 10 minutes.

But if the lapses in concentration, decision making etc can be sorted I think he can create things that a lot of other players can't. Even last night he did a couple of shimmies and 2 or 3 balls that changed things, but the rest has to all come together, which is obviously the question.

Hopefully he gets switched on and confident with us before too long, and gives JS a selection headache at least with Poku and Chair coming back.

He played some delightful balls, seeing the highlights, but clearly needs to have his game developed and has some stiff competition.

tons of silky ability, but naive decision making. when the high risk tricks don't come off in the attacking third then i can take that. When it happens in our defensive half, i can't.

With the 2 holding midfielders last night and 2 forwards happy to run back, I did wonder if he had leave to stay up yesterday, as the only one likely to spring a break.
He had a couple of good moments.

Were those couple of good moments a cross / shot and one bit of foot to foot skill to breakaway from two players into a central position? If so then that’s slim pickings.

I said last season I didn’t get the fella.
Saw him live making his debut v Plymouth and thought “we’ve got one here” but sadly since then he’s done the square root of fcuk all most of the time.

Do hope he clicks into gear but just can’t see it.
(It can’t be that he’s brittle as you don’t get rave reviews in League One if you can’t withstand a few hefty hits)

He is.

Smyth is limited, but he is canny winning lots of free kicks and understands the word "defending".

Dembele can be fantastic, but he is far too lightweight and loses the ball in dangerous positions far, far too often.

To the OP, he is 22 and was touted as one the world's greatest talents 5 or 6 years ago. I think that he is worth persevering with. But right now its up to him to bulk up the Illias Chair way - similar stature, but Chair will not get bullied off the ball and knows how to track back and defend.

Can we go out yet?

Yeah, he's a talent but not a starter, and he needs to show a lot more.

His best position is AMC, then RW and then LW.

Really, he's an AMC, so when Poku is back, it could get exciting.

I found a lot of the comments on this thread a little disappointing to be honest. It adds a lot of weight to the 'there must always be a scapegoat' theory.

He's 22 and has bags of ability. He has shown flashes of that ability but hasn't managed to turn it into consistent nor all round performances yet. That's about all there is to say about Dembele.

When Chris Willock arrived he took quite some time to click into what he eventually became before the injury. Not this long granted, but he was also exposed to way more minutes than Demebele has. Last year Madsen looked like the worst midfielder I've ever seen in a QPR shirt. He appears to be COMPLETELY turning that around this season. I found myself on Weds pretty desperate for him to come on when we needed a goal. What he's so far managed to do this season is really quite a remarkable turnaround.

So we KNOW people take time to adapt and click etc.

We've employed a coach with a demonstrable reputation for developing players. That's clearly what the club is trying to do. So just be patient and let JS develop him. If he can do it with Madsen, turning Dembele into an asset should almost be a formality.

I'm glad he's here and think he'll turn into an important player for us.
