Amazed to see that the 2009 'Red Riding' Trilogy has just been slung up on Netflix of all places .
IMHO it ranks with 'Tinker, Tailor, ''True detective ' series 1 and 'the shadowline' as the greatest Television ever created by the hand of man.

I'm on series 3 of 'Das Boot' which I think has been mentioned before.
Excellent cast and acting though the series 2 plot is a bit far fetched however U-123 did sail up to New York in 1942 so...
Interesting note U-123 was scuttled then raised and entered french service and was decommisioned in 1959!
Goebbels from "Downfall" makes an appearance at the end of 2 and the intro for 3 has part of Goebbels speech (real one) I wonder if that was deliberate as the part is played by a different actor in 3.

Mrs Monkey and I watched that a few years ago.
It started really well, but eventually got really weird and uninteresting... high hopes when it started out though.
I've watched 1883 and am on series 2 of 1923 - really good watch... Dalton is excellent I reckon.

Twin Peaks you mean? If so yeah I totally get that. All the interesting cinematography and artistry is basically gone by that point (like I say, I think Lynch wasn't really involved for this stretch of series 2), and you're just left with a totally bonkers story line (and some just pointless stuff - what's the point of James' subplot where he's getting framed for murdering someone?), but some characters you've got invested in. I'm just gritting my teeth and ploughing through it at this point because i want to watch the third series. |  | | |

Solely based on your recommendation, I watched this despite Matthew Goode often sending me to sleep. I can only say, 'Well done, you'.
Goode was excellent, not his usual foppish role, and Dept Q likewise. Clearly a second series is left hanging.

Not sure if it's already on here but some of the episodes of The Bear on Disney + are genius. Especially Forks and Seven Fishes. Knocks spots off the overblown (IMVHO) The Joker as a study of the impact of mental health challenges. Like the best dramas all of the cast are important and eventually you hear all of the back stories. Not always tied up in a neat bow while still avoiding gratuitously negative storylines. |

I loved the Bear and also hated it.

Almost definitely mentioned earlier in this thread, but I recently managed to get COVID (in 2025!) and being bed/sofa ridden most of the week, decided to rewatch Gomorrah.
I am just at the end of season 2 and the last rewatch was long enough that I only vaguely remember what's coming.
Truly outstanding stuff, it really is incredible. I know subtitles aren't for everyone but it's easily the best foreign language series I've ever seen and probably top 5 all time for me. Molto bene. |  |

I'm not too sure about it (Alien Earth) after the first episode.
It looked wrong. Very clean, colourful and fake. The alien on the ship was the worst looking one from the whole franchise. And all that stuff with the synth kids felt like a lot of Westworld (the TV show) poncery.
And it doesn't make a whole lot of sense in the timeline as it's set two years before Alien.
But hopefully the second episode will be a bit better. |  |

2 episodes into Rivière-Perdue (Lost River) on Prime and I'm enjoying it. On the face of it, it's a fairly standard mystery/crime drama, but it has enough about it to make it very watchable, not least that it's set in the Pyrenees, so the backdrop is stunning. I also just like being immersed in France for an hour, it's almost like being on holiday!
I'm a fan of these kind of mysteries anyway and I wonder if there's a subtle reference to the excellent film Mystic River in the title. So far there are some similarities. The fact that one of the lead detectives is fine looking woman also helps... and as per this genre, there are tantalising threads of sexual desire/romance lurking beneath the surface. |  |

If you like French mystery/crime dramas try Black Spot on Netflix. Very dark and mysterious set in an isolated town in a forested area in deepest France. There are 3 series and the characters and acting are very good. Especially if you like being immersed in France for an hour. | | | |
