With the football season coming to a close in a months time, some here will turn their attention to the smell of freshly mown grass and long days sat in the hot sunny weather watching the great game of cricket.

As a member of Kent Cricket Club, I got to enjoy my first match of the season against Somerset at Canterbury over the last few days. Unfortunately, as is always the way starting the season this early, the first day was lost to rain. In fact nearly all the games were affected by rain, some without a ball even being bowled.

But I did manage to get to see 2 centurions at Canterbury yesterday and a very enjoyable day of cricket (even if I did get sun burned head - Yes I know should have taken a cap).

Did anyone else get to see cricket over the last few days? I know we have several Middlesex supporters who no doubt enjoyed the 'runfest' at Lords (over 1300 runs I believe)

Having finally recovered from last night, what a mental one that was. Cannot believe I am thanking Surrey but boy did they get the job done especially Sam Curran.

First up, Kent had to do the job on Essex, and with almost 70 scored by Essex in the powerplay I was very nervous. But bowlers did well and reeled it back (including the bliss of seeing Jordan Cox trudge off for just 6 - Sorry mate, remind me why you left Kent) restricting Essex to 172.

Muyeye (future England player) and Finch put an amazing partnership of 114 for the 2nd wicket and after 17 overs we just needed a couple of runs. Thanks to Steve Snater we won when he bowled a NB so it was a strange finish to the match.

We were about 15 minutes ahead of the Sussex v Surrey game and so unsure if we had qualified because if Sussex won they went through on NRR. At one point they needed 13 an over so we were hopeful. Kent put the stream on our big scoreboard and nearly every Kent supporter stayed behind to watch the climax of that game.

Normally reliable Chris Jordan was going at 15 an over and Sussex were cruising. Then along came Sam Curran and he was just amazing taking 4 wickets on the night. Fortunately Jordan reeled it in at the last over and Sussex needed 13. They only managed 5 thanks to Jordan and the whole of the Spitfire ground went mad. So big thank you to Surrey who after all these years did the neighbours a favour. Cant tell me that T20 is not entertaining over The Hundred.

So off to Old Trafford in September (Scheduling is mad) and booked my hotel today

Point of interest, we finished with the same amount of wins and losses in the group as last years champions Gloucestershire

James Coles will be England player. Amazing player. We were so unlucky. Gutted!

He had a lot to do and was motoring well. It was nice for us to see McAndrew stranded at the end. He made a very dodgy call at Canterbury and the fans did not forget.

I am going to Arundel in a few weeks for the T50 - Meant to be a lovely ground by all accounts

Arundel is a stunning ground

Many years ago I saw the game that used to always be the first game for tourist opposition.

So was the Duchess of Norfolk eleven against the Windies.

Remember Viv Richards, Gordon Greenidge and I cant remember which four West Indian quicks were playing.

Beautiful sunny day. Long queues for the ice cream and the beer tent.

Cheese and cucumber sandwiches aplenty.

Stunning ground within the valley overlooked by a picturesque forest and an imposing Castle.

A lovely village atmosphere too.

Well worth a visit.

Going back to the tests, I see Dukes are going to be looking at the balls to see if they can workout why they keep going soft so quickly.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cricket/articles/c1jw1gn11pdo

Maybe a rubdown with viagra might keep them from going soft early?

I'm at Merchant Taylor's this afternoon watching Middlesex v Northants - seen a bloke wearing a QPR half and half retro hoops shirt. Come on, which one of you is it?

He fits the demographic

Never thought I’d see Dawson back for England but it’s a welcome return for a couple of tests before the Ashes tour.

Controlled bowling and plenty of runs with the bat too. Much needed experience under pressure, provides a better overall balance compared to Bashir who can’t tie down his place for the county.

Wonder if it’s a more conservative (and shrewd) selection as we are now 2:1 ahead. Lower order runs have been a key differentiator so far in the series.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

It's a forced selection, rather than a conservative one because Bashir is injured. Otherwise he wouldn't be in the side because they are fancying Bashir to do well in Oz.

Dawson is the classic do-well-in-county-cricket wallah that gets better in the mind the longer he is out the side. I hope I am wrong but I fear he will go all round the park in Australia and his useful county runs will translate to a total of 10 against Hazelwood et al.

I must admit I can't see Bashir working out either, but like with Crawley and Archer, they have invested a lot of long-term thinking in this Ashes tour so they won't be changing.

Only just catching up with todays earlier events. How did bloody Pant get a 50 on one leg. Fair play to the guy.

Well done to Stokes for his bowling contribution

Gutted for Zak obviously but it was a loose shot off a spinner - Very sad but another great opening partnership for England with Duckett - Looks like Duckett will get his hundred. He is truly class

Edit: Next time, dont mention the century

Crawley gets so much stick so great to see him produce. There is an extraordinary stat that he averages, across his entire Test career, over 80 against bowling over 88mph or something. THAT is what he brings and why they want him in Oz. Don't see Sibley and Burns doing that, ever.

It was a great effort from Pant but I thought we went a little easy on him, to be honest. Imagine the Aussies in that situation? Literally every ball would have been at that foot. I couldn't believe we were offering him length balls, I know spirit of cricket and all that, but he didn't have to come out to bat. Although they have to sort out the substitute rule for obvious external injuries like that.

Root 20 runs away from jumping 2 places to go to 3rd in all time list of batters. He’s then about 100 away from Ponting in Number 2. What a player.

Be good for Root to get there whilst Punter is working for Sky in the comms box.

Maybe Gary Pratt can pop in when he gets there….

In my (very small) mind, there's a parallel board with a 30+ page thread on Gary Pratt, dominated by our own PuntR and Langer's Elbow....there's even a poll on whether subs should be allowed.

Be amazing if Stokes gets a century to add to his five wicket haul and we manage to clinch what would be an excellent series win.

The man is made of a substance not yet known to most human beings.

I thought his contributions in recent tests were minimal ie not really featuring as a bowler at all and his batting form was poor also.

This test he has put his body through the ringer.

Twice in batting he has been caught full on at pace in the 'NETHER" regions. Ouch. Funny yes but pretty fr*cking painful in the extreme.

His captaincy and adapting bazball has once more proven successful as they only using bazball when necessary.

Very encouraging test series so far. Really enjoying it.

Respectfully, Stokes' bowling effort in the last test served as ample evidence of his willingness to put his body and mind through the "ringer" by bowling nearly a third of the overs in India's second innings.

In fact, it has been an excellent team effort to date, with a very impressive opening partnership from Crawley and Duckett. It was a shame that neither managed to get to a deserved century, as the opener's lot is a tough one, but they laid the foundations for what now looks likely to become a significant lead and will, I believe, lead to a series clinching victory.
