As Clive's often said - if these players were injury-free or had 2 legs, they wouldn't be at QPR

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 12:56 - Jun 30 by Mirrorball | Where do you think Vale will end up playing? I'm intrigued by him because he seems to be a real utility player and I wonder if he will make one position his own or remain as cover for everywhere 😊 |
I think he'll be an option in the wide left position and possibly as a 10. He has players ahead of him, of course, but he's a young prospect who'll need to battle his way into the team. He does seem to be something of a utility player, which can be useful for the squad as the season progresses, but might also be a hindrance to the player himself as he may find nailing down a regular playing spot difficult.

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 13:08 - Jun 30 by EalingHoop81 | I don’t think that’s a fair comparison as he was stuck at Newcastle and not in their prem squad. His games were played in the loan at Pompey on 2025 only. Colback’s was over the course of a whole season. |
This, and it was noticeable that when Hayden turned up Pompy started to improve. Remember, he also carried Dozzell, which is always a big ask. Of the 17 he played from Jan onwards, he only lost 5 of those. And in the last 6 of those 7, they only lost once, and he only came on for the last 6 minutes of that. It's clear Pompey owe their survival to many factors, but one of them will be getting Hayden in on loan. IF we can loan Hayden for a season, then that would be a decent loan.

They've just sold Olaofe to Charlton for £1.5m so presume they're reinvesting some of that.

Have fairly high hopes for Vale. Quite a good list to be part of. Men's Academy Player of the Year: 2024: Alfie Gilchrist 2023: Lewis Hall 2022: Harvey Vale 2021: Tino Livramento 2020: Billy Gilmour 2019: Conor Gallagher 2018: Reece James 2017: Mason Mount 2016: Fikayo Tomori 2015: Dominic Solanke

I've seen that list before -- that's some fairly decent company to be keeping. I find it hilarious though that almost all of that list had to go elsewhere to further their careers and make a very good assent to international honours. Gallagher would probably still be there if it was his choice but even he had to go to Palace to establish himself. Clearly James still there and very much established but again his an outlier. I never realised Livramento was there - that's proper funny that one. [Post edited 2 Jul 15:38]

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 13:18 - Jun 29 by JamesB1979 | That’s what I’d do too. Firstly because he’s earnt it but also, (without a sale or Eze money), not sure I want us spending much more this summer. But if we go with that option, can we get another striker in? You’re basically saying Kelman is 1 and Frey is 2, Celar 3. And Kohli in reserve. |
No way is Celar in over Kolli, I'd put him behind Cian Dillon even. Almost total lack of effort in most of the games he played and rumours he wanted to go back to Europe. No thanks.

To be fair Dozzell looked like a different player at Pompy. I did not expect that!

From what I can see he started 12 of 22 games. And it looks like he started more at the start of his loan than later. He was good in our game, no doubt. But I didn’t watch any other pompey games, so I’ve no idea. I thought one of our podcasts (maybe with Clive) said that Pompey fans were saying that Dozzell was doing much better than Hayden…..so not exactly Hayden carrying Dozzell. [Post edited 3 Jul 8:28]

My in laws are Pompey season tickets holders. I told them Hayden would keep them up. I think it was a slow start as he was nowhere near match fit. I don’t think they are big fans of Dozell but you are correct, he was not being carried by Hayden and was being picked ahead of him at a point. But I think he improved as the match fitness improved….but I don’t think it was anywhere near as positive a loan as we had last year. Equally, without Colback, our midfield two of Varane and Field have no cover other than the new CB. In a more advanced position we have Madson, Morgan, Vale, Chair or Dembele depending on the formation. Both Varane and Field will pick up suspensions and I don’t fancy many of the forward midfielders as part of a central 2 etc. Tuck needs another loan I would guess. So, experience, good in the dressing room, leadership and a known quantity was what had swayed my view. Obviously I know nothing about potential financials. I know others have highlighted LB being vital….I actually think another CM is probably the most important…….you don’t win many games of football when you get overrun in midfield etc. As Brian Clough once said, if you are conceding goals at one end and not scoring at the other…..your problem is midfield…..

100% agree. We need a Colback or a replacement for Colback. I think Mbengue is meant to be abke to play that holding role (as you say) but we do need some cover there. I’m guessing but as no announcement on Colback, he’s been offered a deal and is considering options. Otherwise, why no mention that he’s left?

I agree and would go further to say we need 2 CMs: a 6 and an 8. Can you imagine how transformative a forward passing, box to box CM would be?

As already said, it would take one of history’s biggest ever walkbacks for Hayden to come here. He absolutely despises Nourry and publicly criticised him. He also celebrated Pompeys goals against us like he’d just won the World Cup, Champions League & Okympics all rolled into one. Nourry is the thinnest skinned person who ever lived, it would need Hayden in the centre circle before the first game publicly apologising and leading the crowd in a round of ‘one Christian Nourry’ to ever get him back. It’s possible of course, but he would have to have literally zero options left to consider it.
