Others have said similar but I can't help thinking that that can't be a very attractive proposition for a player, unless they have an emotional attachment to a club, e.g. by dint of being a boyhood fan.
The "We really want you to stay but please take a wage cut" discussion must be a very difficult one, especially when a player is in the twilight of their playing career.

As I said at the end of last season I’d tell him he’s got the first 15 games regardless and let’s see. The way our fixtures have fallen as well that could be a great opportunity for us and him.
But I do get if he’s not willing to extend his contract you try get some money now. |

If we know that he won’t extend his contract he’s got to be sold now. Currently, his stock is very high and we don’t really know if he’s on a Sheron/Washington hot streak. If he doesn’t commit and he has 15 games and he does well, we’ll just be building him up for a better club at the end of the season. |

We shouldn't forget that with the WC coming up, a good season even in the Championship might see him come into reckoning for the US.

Experience from the last couple of seasons would suggest 'no' I think.
Colback is old and may not come back anyway. Leaving Field and Varanne. On a good day that might work, but no backup and we'd still need more legs.
I think we ran out of money for that this time last year (and/or allegedly chose Ashby over Hayden) and it had a negative impact for a lot of the season. |  | | |

I wouldn't want to see us use Vale in CM. He's played a handful of games in that position, mainly for the North Battersea youngsters, and that's it.
Mbengue would probably be a better emergency CM but he's only played once in the position.
I'm intrigued by what's happening, or not happening, with Alex Aoraha. He'll be 23 in a month's time so by Nourry's rule, he should have been shipped out. But nothing's been said about him. He's a DCM of course.

Absolutely crucial to sign one or two CM. There is no point making the signings we have so far, which have been good, if you can't pass forward and retain the ball in midfield.
If a decent midfielder doesn't come in I can see another difficult watch, especially at home.
Be interesting to see if Tuck is moved up, rather than going on loan, as they may use him and Morgan as backup. | |

Assuming Colback is going and has generally only been fit/not suspended for 50% of games, wouldn’t bringing Hayden be the final part of the defensive midfield puzzle? 3 or 4 years younger than Colback, keen to play for us , great leadership and dressing room presence etc?
I know he has a good contract at Newcastle, but his last two years have been loans where I expect neither club have paid much for them. Could possibly agree a deal with Newcastle and take a more moderate wage with us for a 2 year deal etc?

I loved Hayden's loan spell but hard to see that he is the answer to needing an 8. Varane is in his most useful position and obviously a much better option for us with a high ceiling and bids already coming from the continent.

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison as he was stuck at Newcastle and not in their prem squad. His games were played in the loan at Pompey on 2025 only. Colback’s was over the course of a whole season. | | | |
