The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 13:45 - Jun 28 by JamesB1979 | On your last point, I think Mbengue can play that role too. Just based on what he said in his interview. But I wouldn’t mind have Colback on reduced wages as cover there. |
"But I wouldn’t mind have Colback on reduced wages as cover there." Others have said similar but I can't help thinking that that can't be a very attractive proposition for a player, unless they have an emotional attachment to a club, e.g. by dint of being a boyhood fan. The "We really want you to stay but please take a wage cut" discussion must be a very difficult one, especially when a player is in the twilight of their playing career. One for the glossary perhaps?

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 13:10 - Jun 29 by Northernr | As I said at the end of last season I’d tell him he’s got the first 15 games regardless and let’s see. The way our fixtures have fallen as well that could be a great opportunity for us and him. But I do get if he’s not willing to extend his contract you try get some money now. |
15 games and 0 goals for QPR is going to be substantially less lucrative than 15 games and 0 goals elsewhere.

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 14:32 - Jun 29 by Third_Division_South | If we know that he won’t extend his contract he’s got to be sold now. Currently, his stock is very high and we don’t really know if he’s on a Sheron/Washington hot streak. If he doesn’t commit and he has 15 games and he does well, we’ll just be building him up for a better club at the end of the season. |
Yeh I agree mate. | | | |

We shouldn't forget that with the WC coming up, a good season even in the Championship might see him come into reckoning for the US. So I think he'll be gunning for it from the off. The question comes back to whether his head's been turned and he wants away or he'll sign.

He looks to have bulked up so much he can’t do his trainers up! He needs to re-sign and get himself firing for us.

If we go 24 days without another signing, it won't bother me. 3 decent signings in 3 days isn't bad. Unless we've found a spare £5m to get somebody better than what we have.

.....and we agreed to extend his contract to enable the loan.
The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 10:59 - Jun 30 with 2916 views | BklynRanger | One thing I'm wondering is whether we have enough of the right players for Big Julie to play 2 in the middle, as the reports suggest. Experience from the last couple of seasons would suggest 'no' I think. Colback is old and may not come back anyway. Leaving Field and Varanne. On a good day that might work, but no backup and we'd still need more legs. I think we ran out of money for that this time last year (and/or allegedly chose Ashby over Hayden) and it had a negative impact for a lot of the season.
The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 11:21 - Jun 30 with 2820 views | Mirrorball | I agree that we maybe need some extra cover in central midfield but Morgan is another current option and, I think, Harvey Vale may be another option ... Plus the tough tackling Madsen, of course!

The rumours online would suggest we are looking at another midfielder which I agree is where the focus should be now. Any injuries or suspensions would have us pretty bare in this position. Morgan could fill in there but I always thought his best performances were higher up the pitch, same with Madsen really. Hopefully a more B2B type that can link the defence with our attack

I wouldn't want to see us use Vale in CM. He's played a handful of games in that position, mainly for the North Battersea youngsters, and that's it. Mbengue would probably be a better emergency CM but he's only played once in the position. I'm intrigued by what's happening, or not happening, with Alex Aoraha. He'll be 23 in a month's time so by Nourry's rule, he should have been shipped out. But nothing's been said about him. He's a DCM of course. In my view we need to recruit two new CMs - a 6 and an 8.

Absolutely crucial to sign one or two CM. There is no point making the signings we have so far, which have been good, if you can't pass forward and retain the ball in midfield. If a decent midfielder doesn't come in I can see another difficult watch, especially at home. Be interesting to see if Tuck is moved up, rather than going on loan, as they may use him and Morgan as backup.

The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 12:39 - Jun 30 with 2351 views | EalingHoop81 | I had understood back in January from this board (not ITK at all) that we retained a strong link with Isaac Hayden, despite his loan to Pompey. Assuming Colback is going and has generally only been fit/not suspended for 50% of games, wouldn’t bringing Hayden be the final part of the defensive midfield puzzle? 3 or 4 years younger than Colback, keen to play for us , great leadership and dressing room presence etc? I know he has a good contract at Newcastle, but his last two years have been loans where I expect neither club have paid much for them. Could possibly agree a deal with Newcastle and take a more moderate wage with us for a 2 year deal etc? Apologies if I have missed a recent discussion or if this is a Spackman!!

Last season Colback played 24 games to Hayden's 17. Personally, I'd prefer to move on from both of them and find someone else.
The QPR summer transfer rumours thread on 12:55 - Jun 30 with 2231 views | Hoopstar | I loved Hayden's loan spell but hard to see that he is the answer to needing an 8. Varane is in his most useful position and obviously a much better option for us with a high ceiling and bids already coming from the continent. I genuinely haven't a clue what midfielder we could target - intrigued to find out if we do bring someone in.

Where do you think Vale will end up playing? I'm intrigued by him because he seems to be a real utility player and I wonder if he will make one position his own or remain as cover for everywhere 😊

I don’t think that’s a fair comparison as he was stuck at Newcastle and not in their prem squad. His games were played in the loan at Pompey on 2025 only. Colback’s was over the course of a whole season.
