True enough / based on last week’s showing.

Sunderland Match Thread on 14:23 - May 3 by Gloucs_R | We've been a bit toothless upfront today. For all of the hard work that frey has contributed, we've not actually created many opportunities. Which has been the story of our season. |
We won against a playoff team away and were protecting an early lead.
Sunderland Match Thread on 14:37 - May 3 with 2596 views | HAYESBOY | Well done Rangers. Good win to pick people up. I would have preferred to see Esquerdinha come on for Colback instead of Fox who is probably off. Nitpicking maybe. Varane played really well. A little more quiet in the 2nd half. Edwards immense. Kolli great work rate and effort when on from half time. Makes me feel more positive for next season. Just need to keep the injuries down.

Sunderland Match Thread on 14:37 - May 3 with 2583 views | Burnleyhoop | Madsen: touch of a Rolls Royce, engine of a Morris Minor. Needs a good old fashioned pre-season of fitness work and bulking up. The loss of Edward’s and Dunne will be massive. Both fantastic today.

100%. Finishing 15th with Cardiff and Luton going down was little more than Carlsberg vibes back in November.
Sunderland Match Thread on 14:39 - May 3 with 2497 views | Malintabuk | I will take that after the week we have been through... which again I think highlights that the club is bigger than one individual be it a manager or a CEO/DoF. When push comes to shove it is the players that really matter Thought there was a lot of fight and spirit today. And some good performances. Frey though limited must be a nightmare to play against, and Madsen looked the best technical player on a pitch, which included a Bellingham Though MOTM for me was Varane.... but a real close call with Ashby who I thought looked really good Well can our summer of discontent be not as bad as it looks.
Sunderland Match Thread on 14:39 - May 3 with 2497 views | ted_hendrix | What's not to like? no last minute hiccups, going into the Summer with a win and a win away from home. The whole goddam planet knows we've got a lot of work to do behind the scenes so here's hoping we start working on that tomorrow. Thank you and good night.

Sunderland Match Thread on 14:45 - May 3 with 2271 views | derbyhoop | Dogged performance and an unexpected result. We finish in a very comfortable 15th, with the same points as last year. Re - an earlier post. Yes, there has been progress, although nothing to go overboard about. Young players have been introduced. Most of last Summer's recruits have a much better idea of what is needed. The downsides are the collapse in the Marti/Nourry relationship. And so many senior players out of contract. Will we be any better 25/26? Depends who is Head Coach and recruitment.

Sunderland Match Thread on 14:48 - May 3 with 2179 views | baz_qpr | Really good performance there. Interesting set up it seemed to be fluid between 3-4-3 and 4-3-3 with Colback stepping into midfield and Ashby playing very high wing back. Classy goal from Madsen, I would say Ashby's best performance he caused them a lot of trouble. At least one new Hammy injury though!

Sunderland Match Thread on 14:52 - May 3 with 2045 views | Welsh_Ranger | Great result and a brave performance with lots of players putting themselves about and showing effort and desire. Walsh looked a little shaky for me, some good saves later in the game and as people have noted a good kick on him. As someone mentioned, Frey played the whole match which he wasn't previously doing - is that because of a training thing or something else? I know its the last game of the season and as fans we can read things into certain situations but do you think maybe things had got stale with Marti and players weren't necessarily buying into training anymore and or his setup? Was he being too stubborn and trying to prove a point to CN by not playing a CF at times and other line-up abnormalities? Just intrigued

Yeah, twas me. Smells a bit off and I’m pretty sure many of the weird decisions made since February have been to make a point and/or force Nourry’s hand. Toxic in the end. I doubt we’ll ever find out but at least now the season is over, we can try and reboot from the mess. Whoever takes over as head coach is really going to have to work on their managing upwards skills or they won’t be around long.

Sunderland Match Thread on 15:04 - May 3 with 1782 views | aston_hoop | I think that was just Martí's team doing Martí's things but managed by Betsy and Calm. Came up against a desperately out of form Sunderland side and did the business against them. In Ronnie Edwards, I'm going to say we might actually have the only centre back in the league who can get anywhere near the level of Esteve and Egan-Riley at Burnley and that helps. I loved the performance of Varane today, when you come up against a team with Bellingham, Rigg and Neil who are all worth huge amounts and put in a performance like that, it should make other teams sit up and take notice. Consistency in his game and he goes for big money. Also Madsen really starting to fit his game into our play. Finally I think Frey makes a big difference, he occupies defenders and gives the rest of our attacking players far more space to play in. This system needs a proper number 9 and he is that

Sunderland Match Thread on 15:13 - May 3 with 1616 views | mart_Goblin | Well, we are a bonkers team and club aren’t we? How many accumulators must we f*ck up ever weekend ? 🤣 Firstly Sunderland were terrible and if they don’t buck their ideas up they have got no chance . But that aside we looked comfortable without really imposing ourselves on the game . No one knows if the players wanted to win for Marti or they felt like the chains were off a little but they did seem much more free to play . Might have something to do with opposition but it did appear that way , As someone alluded to earlier we have big holes to fill in Edwards and Dunne, both fantastic today . Morrison and Varane too . Cook & JCS to come in of course but I have no trust in the latter at the moment (his fitness not him as a bloke ). Walsh continues to impress . Madsen also . Faded again but had to be more combative and at times we got exposed, but he took his goal well and there continues to be green shoots. Ashby did well but still get the impression he does it when he wants to or when he’ll be noticed . He played well today but we can improve on him . As now been mentioned a couple of times, Frey can play a whole game this week but couldn’t start last ? A bit strange for me . I have my theories , but now isn’t the time. Strange that winning a dead rubber like that can mean so much , but it did . It means after an horrific week for our football club we can finish with a positive (hopefully 2 with the youngsters winning the cup at home to Brentford ). I think that’s the very least we all deserve .

What are we then? We've won one trophy in our entire history, a new trophy not every club took seriously and that was nearly sixty years ago. We were runners up once in the top division. In the last 25 years we've spent a total of three seasons in the top flight and the same in L1. We play in one of the smallest and oldest grounds in the division we've spent most of the last 50 years in. Delusions of grandeur don't have any practical benefit.

I like him as well, occupies CB's and puts in a shift. Shame we won't know if he's staying for a while; same with many of them! Kelman doing well again for LO. Now the dust has settled its going to be a waiting game to find out all the ins and outs - big summer me thinks!
