Players who you thought would be brilliant but ended up being bang average !!! 11:10 - May 11 with 6887 views | numptydumpty | Will start with a recent one. Sinclair Armstrong. I thought in his first few games, I predicted Sinclair Armstrong had the potential to be a top top player and felt it was all within himself to achieve this. Definitely had hopes and probably like many to start with, he reminded me of Sir Les. Very wrong on that one. Another recent player for me was Rob Dickie I think at the start of one of his seasons, he banged in two or three twenty five yard goals, as well as being everywhere in defence. He has, for me been more successful than Sinclair, but seems his level is a decent but not outstanding championship central defender. He is going to have a tough time coming up, after his foul seems to have knocked Bristol out of the playoffs also. Clearly Ronnie Edwards has shown brilliance and massive potential. Be interesting to see how he improves. It's never a given, but I doubt he will end up fitting into this particular category. Anyone have others over the many years of following Rangers that spring to mind... [Post edited 11 May 11:11]

Players who you thought would be brilliant but ended up being bang average !!! on 09:40 - May 12 with 1500 views | PastCaringNW2 | I drank the John Hollins Kool Aid back in 96 when relegation was followed a couple of afternoons later by the reserves winning the Combination League with a win at Loftus Road against Brighton IIRC. Mark Graham was the new Beckenbauer, Paul Bruce the new Beckham etc etc. Charles and Mahoney-Johnson our very own "smash and grab" duo. New deals all around then! Willing the hype to be real goes with the territory at times but you'd have been waiting a long time for either of those first two predictions to come true. I can't remember a single thing about Mark Graham. Paul Bruce definitely had his day where it all came together in the first team but on reflection it probably was just the one day. For the cadre of players (that included that unicorn of unicorns, Steve Slade) who were supposedly challenging Hateley, Gallen and Dichio for places in the team that optimism lasted as long as a clutch of wholly anonymous performances in a miserable home defeat to Port Vale in a half empty stadium. So much for a golden age then but I hung on to the idea that we had greatness in the wings for far longer than was sensible. The two I thought deserved a lot more time and a better shot were Trevor Challis and Matty Lockwood but the Houston / Rioch combo didn't seem to have much interest in developing youth unless we had over-paid Arsenal to get it. IIRC Holloway took both of them to Bristol Rovers so he must have seen something he liked. [Post edited 12 May 9:43]

I never felt that he imposed himself on the game while playing for us. He's had a decent career, though, winning the Copa del Rey with Valencia and the Europa League with Villarreal.

Definitely had a great career - he captained that Villarreal team for a long time too and played for Spain - but he was awful for us! The only good thing about him during his time in Hoops was the song - we've got the best midfield in the world! Good shout. I was at the Swindon game when he scored and then injured his knee and, as I recall, that was that - end of QPR career. Such a shame as he had started to look very promising.

Disagree Parejo was awful Was 18 in a foreign country playing in a mush mash squad that Bruatore and Paladini had flung together You could see the kid had something about him but he was often so ahead of the other players in terms of passing the runs didn’t come and it looked like it was a terrible ball He was in no way a bad player

The only on-pitch thing I can remember about him now was a booking for a foul by the SAR touchline where he essentially stamped on an opponent and it wasn't even deliberate, just absurdly clumsy as he attempted to stop and turn.

Lockwood and Challis went on to have very good careers with Orient and Bristol Rovers respectively. I played in the same Rangers youth team as Mark Graham (among others mentioned) and he was a really good attacking left winger . But watching him struggle at left back every week for the 1st team was painful.

I thought coming from Arsenal he may be able to defend well, or be good at the offside trap, or head the ball out well- or failing that trap a football and pass it to one of our players- alas he could do none of these things 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

And Adam Miller - not homegrown, but we signed him young from non-league.

Wes Daly was in my class at school. That was a surreal one. Especially when Dad would say "On Monday, tell him he's shit", yeah he's well hard Dad, I'll probably skip that

Mine span the eons of time Ron Springett.... remember my uncle saying what a great keeper he was, and wow be great to have him back... watched him thought what was my uncle smoking Gus Ceasar again though wow, we already have an England keeper, how good must this guy be... sadly disillusioned very quickly Poor old Joe Lumley... that kick at Villa seemed to destroy him, which was a shame, but it still led to disappointment

That was the last time we had an Academy team playing at the highest level - Gerry disbanded it completely a couple of years later, of course - that I looked at and thought contained some handy players. Burgess on the right hand side, McFlynn and Cochrane in the middle, Walshe wide left had a wicked cross on him, Pacquette up front, Murphy left back and Bull in goal. Good team, very well coached by Warren Neill. The fact that none of them played above League 1 really emphasises how big the jump is from U18 to adult football.
