A lot of where we are comes down to ambition. We've made it very clear that we want to break even and the only way of doing that is to develop and sell players on.

Avoid relegation and balance the books...

That's it. That's where we are as a club.

So finishing 14th would be a decent accomplishment this season. Even more so if we sell a couple of players at the end of it.

And borne out by the frightening silence of his three colleagues when Julien dropped in the words 'Premier League' in response to a question aobut ambition at the FF. It was like he'd confessed to incest.

I'm expecting little from this season, and even then I'm sure the club will find a way of disappointing us.

I feel like we as QPR fans immediately expect the worst šŸ˜‚

I think there's a decent core here, but it needs filling out. I'm still now as down on Larkeche as most, and think that while he isn't an immediate improvement on Paal, he's got more potential. Yesterday he looked pretty good (despite being cooked for the goal, but I don't think we'd find a single Champ LB who'd have stood up to that turn of pace) and while his positioning is suspect it's coachable. I'm more worried about going in with Adamson as a RB backup because while he showed flashes of promise yesterday, it's a big step up from the A-League. I'd have preferred to have given him more time to bed in before throwing him into a full champ season.

The midfield is still too static but signs from Madsen are good. We need more depth and bite here though. We looked much better with Varane in the team yesterday, so hopefully he steps in against Preston. We need more though.

The Nardi / Walsh situation makes sense financially but feels tough on Nardi, who was good last season. If there was a club coming in for Nardi I'd have let him go rather than doing this to him, but in that instance we would have needed to keep Cooper.

We NEED a recognised striker, preferably a 9. Yesterday we saw again that we can't beat the press without someone who can hold the ball up. Frey is a must for this team which is worrying due to his history, so I hope the club have another signing up their sleeves. Was disappointed not to see Burrell yesterday.

All in all I'm not immediately panicking but we need some signings and I think anyone who expected us to suddenly be a top-half team is a little optimistic. I think it'll be another season from 15th-18th, depending on new signings. The core is starting to come together though, and I like a couple of the DS players starting to step in (Sutton especially).

O that'll work - with Frey's legendary hold-up play!

I'm not sure if we've got a forward line, or even a forward, who's fully fit for purpose, have we?

It'll be all right on the night, let's hope.

The teams he selects, the positions he plays some of the players, the tactics he uses, he smiles and jokes far too much and so on.

Too early to judge atm but it concerns me......nothing but a win will keep me onside against PNE.

I'm with you - Julien out! Even though he's just een! Far too many avuncular jokes at the FF. He makes the late Gerard Houllier look malignant.

Apart from that, I'll be starting the season as cheerily as ever.

Good point re Sints. I was a fairly athletic young man, played footie, ran everything from 100 yd sprints to cross country, involved in a myriad of other sports, and the only cramp I ever experienced was an American psychobilly band.

You went to see a single Cramp, rather than The Cramps?

I recall players used to get cramp playing in the FA Cup finals at Wembley, otherwise they were very rare. Loftus Rd is no Wembley.

Now I see why we throw cup matches - it is an anti-cramp precaution...genius.

Obsessive Cramp Syndrome and Preseason Deficit Disorder could be another excuse for team selection at Plymouth.

Also:

1) we left Michi on the bus, sir
2) the dog ate Celar
3) my Mum forgot to pack Burrell
4) the older, bigger kids took Kolli
5) I sent Alfie to you by email, must be in your Spam folder

Edit spelling - sorry Rayan’s Dad, too much cricket yesterday.

Frey's hold-up play has actually been fairly decent, he shows surprising control, and is capable of bringing in other players. We looked more capable with him as the target man last season in a 4-3-3 (Cifuentes's more pragmatic approach).

... And he's our top scorer. He isn't available enough and he looks unconventional, but he's reasonably effective.

That it won't be all the Head Coach's fault if we start off badly, he can only work with the players he has been given and the fitness issues are a big worry.

Have we learnt any of the lessons from last season, in spite of the fact some on here keep saying it's a rubbish division, it's not there's a lot of quality and we need a team that is robust and will stand up to the physicality.

Very strange not to get some minutes into Burrell yesterday.
Is he actually thinking of starting the midget army up front?

false 9 innit

just another football fad along with passing out from the back and high pressing that has passed our club by.

this squad is utterly incapable of any of that.

maybe that last sentence should have stopped before the "of".

Another long season of hoping that we are less sh1te than the oppo...

Can we go out yet?

What have (I) learnt?

It’s all Nourry’s fault
It’s all Ben Williams fault
No-one understands what De-Souza does
Goalkeeper isn’t as good as last season
We have a weak defence
We have a weak midfield
We have no attack
Manager is inexperienced for our league
Players are unfit
Old manager is a demi-God
We don’t do experienced left backs
Arsenal won’t buy Eze
We are building our youth team
Season starts Saturday
Beer prices are going down
We have no idea of the starting formation
We’ll end up lower half of the table
Looking forward to the season starting

What happened to start with yesterday was the 14 Carvalho was able to just go and stand in 40 yards of clear space in front of our defence where a normal team would have what we call a 'midfield'. He was just freely available to receive a forward pass 35 yards out from goal in every attack.

We countered this after a while be sending Larkeche charging infield from left back to engage him. So every time Brentford passed into Carvalho Larkeche would sprint in from left back to try and shut that down. That, however, then of course left a huge space at left back and with Dembele further ahead of him down that side Brentford were able to just do as they pleased.

If I was doing Preston's video analysis for next week I'd certainly be giving that a red hot crack.

Spot on.

We're definitely taking our time bringing people back from injury this season.

Frustrating though this is and fertile ground for some amateur stand up, it seems like a return to what we were doing two seasons ago in bringing people up to full fitness slowly. May be coincidence but we ended up with fewer long term injuries.

I dunno where we are this season and yes there are some worrying shortfalls in certain positions. But there are definite improvements too from where we started last season: Poku, a fully fit Chair, an experienced Varane, Mbengue over Fox, more pace in the squad etc.

And yes we're light on DMs but we were last season too. Colback was available for the first five matches but of those: we lost against WBA; he came on in the 52nd minute against Sheff Utd, got sent off in the 83rd minute for two yellow cards for dissent; was suspended; played in the win at Luton (who didn't beat them?); the draw at Sheff Wed in September then we didn't see him playing a full half of football until February 4th, just a few cameos in January. If our objective is to stay up this season and get experience for our youth/new players then we won't miss his contribution much, certainly in the first half of the season.

Goals is a perennial issue. Hopefully Poku and a fit Chair should provide more from our AMs/wings than we offered last season. Can't judge Burrell at all yet. Need to get Frey and Kolli fit and ideally bring a big, awkward CF in to annoy CBs.

Am I confident? No, this is the Championship innit. But a hell of a lot more confident than after losing 5-0 to Oxford Utd with no Jimmy Dunne starting the season the pre-season before last.

I didn't feel too annoyed as a result of that on Saturday to be honest. Maybe I should but it was so clearly a mismatch in most positions, it was more about improving fitness, avoiding injury (not sure) etc

I thought Morrison looked very good, apart from the goal. Dembele looked sharp, and Chair got a lot of further fitness into him which he'll need because he appears to be told to run all over the place.

I also liked what I saw of Adamson - yes he needs to not dive in, even against weaker opposition, but he's got plenty of energy and tenacity, and a bit of an idea about him in the final third.

Morgan struggled but will hopefully learn from it, and as Clive mentioned we seem now to be asking Larkeche to do all sorts of things, which just can't be sensible, so we'll see what happens there.

Support-wise there was far less of an uncomfortable edge than I thought there might have been, but maybe that tells its own story.

And no idea at all whey he wouldn't get Mbengue and Burrell on for 20 mins at least - am sure Julie has his reasons but beats me.

I think I’ve learnt that we’re skint and stuck in bottom third purgatory that is the Championship but increasingly have the punching power of a top third league one team.

Unless we can buy low, sell high, we can’t afford nice things and will forever be stuck around 16th

Interested to see what JS can do compared to Marti but bloody hell, not replacing the key areas of issue

Sorry if it sounds negative and also stating the obvious to most of you on here!

Hope we get a left back, striker, centre half and Hayden in. Imagine we’ll get 1 or 2 of those because that’s just where we are.

Tough gig for Julien.

Qpr may rue the day Cifuentes was not backed by the owners. At least we knew he could find a way to cope with a deficient squad.

On the other hand Stephan might be a genius who has struggled in the pre season games because Frey and Kolli have been largely unavailable, along with Varane in cm. If they are fit to play soon we might see some better football and results.

Although I am still not convinced with Larkeche and would prefer a more experienced full back signed . Also, if wages could be agreed, sign either Hayden (preferably) or Colback to add to the squad.

Well i cant say you can be so positive about a player who has made just a few appearances in the first team squad.

And most - not in competitive matches.

He has shown promise but its very very early days and more than likely would require a loan and regular football for him to long term show his undoubted promise.

We have all been over excited about Sinclair Armstrong and Rayan Kolli and yet neither has managed to move forwards to any degree.

What I would say regards Emerson Sutton from my position in South Africa Road stand - noticed Julien with his arms around him, whispering words of advice and encouragement - before he came on.

Could be one that the management see, as one that with encouragement, could do well, but sorry, he is far from the real deal, as yet.

Boring post by me, but with a sense of pragmatic realism !!!!!

In other words - I am a right miserable git until proven otherwise.... "Oh", is the outlook of a long term Rangers fan.....

I mean, in their defence, there's a month of window left. There'll be more signings. Difficult to judge what we look like before September 1. I hope it looks different to this.

Problem is we've got some very winnable games between now and then that ideally you wouldn't burn off working things out.

We’re at the start of yet another new era (hopefully one that sustains for at least 5 years), new manager and players just through the door and very little time to settle the whole thing down.

I don’t expect to hit the ground running, but do expect things to come together gradually and probably in line with more players becoming fit and available.

But in truth, who really knows what the hell we are going to get this season šŸ¤·šŸ¼
