Two possible reasons we're looking at wide men. Smyth has been offered a new contract but hasn't signed it. Poku's injury might be worse than expected.
With those LB and CM slots still vacant, we might be in for a busy final week of the window. |

The mantra is two spots for each position. We have 3 in those wide forward roles. That’s more than enough to cover injuries/contract disputes.

Exactly what I was going to say. With Larkeche out for the season we clearly need a LB (at least on loan), and while Edwards can play as a holding midfielder we really need a box-to-box guy. I see those as priorities ahead of strengthening the CB position, though I see the need to be replacing Cook. |

For the sake of argument, if Smyth is going and Poku's injury keeps him out of the side for months, who would we have left for the wide positions? Dembele, Kolli and Vale. Chair too but he should be in the middle of the 3.
Sutton is a prospect but isn't ready for the first team and needs a loan to progress. Bennie is the same, and we're unsure of his position anyway.
Given the above, bringing in a new wide player wouldn't be profligate. |  | | |

Us old farts on here need to get with the program, or more apt, get with the project.
This club is a full on shop.
It’s not about building a squad to challenge (or even survive), it’s not about blending players together as a motivated unit, it’s not about cup runs (was it ever) or even entertainment.
This project is about buying for £X, showcasing and selling for £Y with the resultant £Z hopefully being profits on the scale of an Eze every few years.
You got half a dozen wingers? So what man, the algorithm says they’ll be in demand in two years and that’s where the beans are at.
It’s not always true that “you don’t win nothing with kids” but I’ll wager you a lump that you get relegated from this level easily using novices and not having a well balanced physical squad. |  |

But with where he's at in his career I'm pretty sure he'd want a regular starting berth.

Extraordinary. That, I did not expect. I can't deny I'm really excited by this.
I wonder what the deal is? I'm almost certain we wouldn't pay more than £2.5 million up front - but may be offering up to £5 million with add ons based on things like getting promoted etc.
I hope we've kept at least £3 million of the Eze money to spend on centre mid and at least one full back.
Be great if we could use some of it to pay Max Lowe's wages and get him in a free at LB.
Centre mid also badly needs an energetic ball player.
Saito + Centre Mid + Full Back and we could be cooking.
