The QPR summer managers rumours thread on 20:54 - May 31 by lassel

He was always leaving this summer which makes the attempt to win the PR battle by putting him on gardening leave even more stupid. Just pay him the modest settlement and move on with your lives…sure he may have hurt some ego’s but be the grown ups in the room.

Instead they’re offering to let him join another club compensation free to try and dig themselves out of a whole they created for themselves whilst he’s chilling in the background still being paid and going to be an awkward black cloud for as long as it takes to find a resolution.

So you’re saying we should have paid him off and so paid out 1 years comp and had zero chance of receiving any compensation? Or now we pay his salary but have a chance of getting some compensation or worst case we don’t have to pay him anything for breach of contract.

And the latest betting is Julien Stephan 1/2, Johannes Hoff Thorup 5/1, Tom Cleverley 6/1 and Onur Cinel now slipping down to 10/1.

It's all to play for punters.

He’s biased of course as he has a dog in the fight.

He’s been constantly saying that Cifuentes was pushing to leave last summer after giving us 6 months of his time. Decided to stay after no interest in him and signed a nice new contract.
Now as the season ends and some jobs he quite fancies come up he tarts himself around again and tries to outmanoeuvre the club so they don’t get paid any compensation.
And lassel thinks we should pay him money to leave 🤣

Read the Plymouth chairman’s article posted recently on this thread: their ex manager refused to return to the UK to force the club to give in to his demands to leave. Not sure why supporters show any loyalty to managers like this as they don’t show any loyalty to us.

With all the injuries Marti had to deal with it wasn`t really that easy to play exciting football Imo.

Sorry, but under MC the football was not good. Yes he kept us up, but it hasn't been an enjoyable watch, a couple of times yes, but overall its been poor.
He couldn't seem to get the balance right, it was either open up and get walloped or grind out results. Nothing in between.

Julien Stephen is supposed to be a 3-5-2 (and quite direct) man. Hardly fits the "game model"

The compensation angle only works if you believe that anyone is going to actually pay it, which the gardening leave stunt immediately killed as any interested club now knows it’s an untenable situation.

As said, they very quickly offered to let him go compensation free once they realised West Brom weren’t going to hire him as they knew they’d dug a hole halfway to China. They’re now stuck paying him (plus the new manager) until either his contract expires or he takes a new job, which he is in no rush to do.

Not sure how Id feel about having a manager called Julien

And AI’s take on Julien Stephan…

Julien Stéphan is a French football manager known for his tactical intelligence, focus on structure, and ability to develop young players. His most notable stints were with Stade Rennais (Rennes), where he won the 2019 Coupe de France, and RC Strasbourg, where he impressed initially before things declined in his second season.

Here’s a breakdown of his style and what QPR fans might expect if he were to be appointed:

⚽ Julien Stéphan’s Football Philosophy and Style

1. Tactical Structure & Flexibility
• Formation: Often favors a 4-2-3-1 or 3-5-2, but is tactically versatile depending on the opposition.
• Prioritizes compact defensive shape, with a well-organized mid-block.
• Likes his teams to be disciplined and hard to break down, with intelligent positional play.

2. Possession with Purpose
• Not obsessed with possession, but when his teams have the ball, they play with clear patterns.
• Focuses on quick vertical transitions, using the flanks and attacking midfielders to break lines.
• Can play on the counter when needed — pragmatic, not dogmatic.

3. Youth Development
• Known for trusting and developing young players (Eduardo Camavinga made his breakthrough under him at Rennes).
• If QPR wants to promote from within or develop talent, he’s an ideal fit.

4. High Standards and Attention to Detail
• Demands high levels of concentration and work ethic.
• Players have often spoken about how well-prepared his teams are, especially tactically.

🏟️ What Can QPR Fans Expect?

✅ Positives
• Organized team with a clear tactical identity.
• Development of younger players — ideal for a club with budgetary constraints.
• Can bring Cup pedigree and a more modern, continental approach.
• Could make QPR more competitive against better squads through intelligent game plans.

⚠️ Potential Concerns
• Not a manager known for expansive, swashbuckling football — it’s more calculated than exciting.
• His success depends heavily on buy-in from players and support from the board.
• His spell at Strasbourg ended poorly after a strong start — some questions about handling adversity and squad dynamics.

🔄 Comparison to Recent QPR Managers
• More tactically refined than Ainsworth, and less reliant on direct, physical football.
• Closer to Michael Beale’s philosophy, but with more tactical maturity and experience at higher levels.

🎯 In Summary

If Julien Stéphan joins QPR, fans can expect:
• A more structured, tactically sound team.
• Likely improved defensive organization and game management.
• A manager who can work within financial limits and develop young talent.
• Not necessarily fireworks every week, but a manager who brings discipline and a professional culture.

Let me know if you’d like a comparison with another candidate or a predicted lineup under his management.

I said they should’ve bitten their tongues, paid him the agreed upon settlement and shaken hands as adults. There would’ve been some angry fans online but it’s football and we are fickle as fans, the new shiny manager and signings would make us forget quickly.

Instead they tried to be clever and have dug an enormous hole where nobody is going to pay compensation, Cifuentes is happy to take the pay and wait for a job rather than being gone with a modest settlement and we face the ludicrous situation of the popular previous manager still in the background while the new manager tries to get on with it.

It’s a PR disaster and terrible value for money from the rather expensive PR consultants the club brought in to manage the leaving of Cifuentes.

If you go back and look at the decisions that led to this situation:

1) no one forced the club to improve Mr CIF’s contract.
2) no one forced the club to put Mr CIF in the garden.

Add to those, the lack of any solid succession plan that has become dependent on the decisions, hence all the speculation regarding the replacement.

The club and its representatives decided to make both decisions so ultimately, they (and as a result us) are the ones with the consequences.

As Lassel points out, no need for Mr CIF to do anything. It’s a decision the club needs to make yet again to pay off the contract and/or accept zero compensation is due.

Unless a better offer arrives, why would he leave when he’s being paid to relax at home. If he’s confident he’ll get another job, then he won’t be remotely stressed. There will inevitably be another high paid chair left for him when the music stops this summer.

No wonder he was smiling like a Cheshire Cat when the new contract was announced last year.

The mess and time pressure is all on QPR, with added financial pressure due to the lack of compensation now due to release Marti and the compensation likely due if we want a decent replacement with a release clause.

Great work everyone, especially the CEO who’s ultimately responsible for all the clubs decisions - that’s his job. You get the plaudits when things go well and the shit when they don’t.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

I’m not talking about PR or to be honest about whether Marti should have stayed or gone. I’m just saying from money point of view, your option is more expensive.

A club out size should be using the potential for progression as a selling point, not shooting itself in the foot over it.

I keep reading that legally we can’t employ a coach while Marti is still at the club (albeit on gardening leave). Can’t the club get round that semantically by employing someone and just giving them a new title, ‘chief assistant of turf operations’ or some such.

Turf Accountant?

I posted this on a different thread but relevant here I think. There are obvious and not obvious costs to putting MC on gardening leave.

It will be / has been a stupid and expensive endeavour however you feel about MC‘s behaviour.

- compensation fee we may have lost out on
- any compensation fee we‘d have to pay
- the people holding off renewing season tickets until the footballing issues are stable
- the revolution of new players and staff that comes with every managerial departure and arrival
- and if MC doesn’t depart soon possibly the extra salary of a second manager.

We could promote from within which would alleviate most of those issues.

Hold on are you saying they actually brought in PR consultants, not even singular but plural to handle it?! Is that solid info? If so it's mind boggling.
