Now WLS reporting the same

"After an 18-month stint at Strasbourg, who sacked him in 2023, he returned to Rennes, but left last November after a bad run of results."

I'm assuming "left last November after a bad run of results" fits our profile from the last 4 seasons?

Happy to give the lad a go but why not consider a manager with some actual experience in this division like Carrick or whoever with previous experience?

Never knowingly right.

I suspect his development CV would have been the biggest trait considering the Championship MO is to develop, sell and repeat.

Raphinha, Doue, Camavinga, Guirassy, Doku.

It's an impressive list including 2 of the T10 players in this years B D'or odds. Hopefully the right guy to mould the likes of Varane moving forward

He has been of course our number one target all along. Nourry was in fact going to appoint him last November after we played Stoke (I know this because my second cousin"s dog came from the same litter as Nourry's wife's doberman) Anyway a few of ye misguided fans kept chanting Marti's name despite winning only one game and playing shite, which made sacking him rather awkward. To make matters worse he then went and won a few games in December and January so we were stuck with him until the Sunderland game. But now we have finally got our man , Marti's garden is in ship shape so he can bugger off to Middlesbrough or wherever and all is well in the world. Top ten finish should be the least of our expectations

One win in seventeen games at Strasbourg, sounds about right.

It’s a real failure of the club that the Marti situation has got to this, he was the guy we needed IMO.

Stephan will be a strange one if true. On one hand I can see the potential, some good runs and a record of player development. On the other hand, wasn't a key criterion for the club experience of the many 3 game weeks we get in the Champ? 3 roles in Ligue 1 France is not going to help with that. Decision influenced maybe by Le Bris coming from Ligue 1 last year and getting promotion? (are our 28 year old French CEO and Sunderland's 28 year old French chairman close?)

I agree amigo. We'll likely never know the real truths behind all this; one rarely does.

However, you can not help but feel that QPR and more pointedly: the egos and frailties of some, the algorithm(s), and the general level of incompetence one has come to expect out of the QPR boardroom since the Rotund Malay bundled into town to fcuk everything up, have put us in our latest predicament.

I'd have an Estrella with Marti and through the depths of our brewing winter of discontent, always felt we should Keep Calm and Marti on. If it were up to me, the planet would not have been forced to warm up a notch because of these 43 pages debating Marti's replacement.

Apparently he plays a very similar style of football to what Marti does but seemingly is not wedded to the same formation week in and week out.

Assessing whether Julien Stéphan would be a good match for QPR involves looking at his coaching style and how it aligns with QPR's current squad, recent tactical history, and club ambitions.
Julien Stéphan's Coaching Style:
* Tactical Flexibility: Stéphan is known for being adaptable, using various formations (4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2, 3-4-3) and adjusting to his squad's strengths and opponents. This is a significant plus, as it means he's less likely to rigidly impose a system that doesn't fit the players.
* Intensity and Direct Attacking Play: His teams play with high intensity, focus on direct attacking, and utilize wing play to create offensive maneuvers. He emphasizes getting multiple players into the box for crosses and quick passing between lines.
* Solid Defensive Foundation & High Press: He believes in building from a strong defense, setting patterned traps, and applying pressure. He's also willing to employ a high press, especially when chasing a game.
* Calculated Risk-Taker: Stéphan isn't afraid to take calculated risks to win the ball in dangerous areas.
* Emphasis on Ball-Playing Centre-Backs: His systems often leverage good ball-playing center-backs for build-up play.
QPR's Context:
* Recent Tactical Shift: Under Martí Cifuentes, QPR transitioned from a more direct, long-ball approach under Gareth Ainsworth to a possession-based, high-pressing style. This shift was generally well-received and saw an improvement in results, as it seemed to suit the players better.
* Squad Strengths/Weaknesses (General): QPR typically has a mix of experienced Championship players and younger talent. Historically, they've had creative attacking midfielders (like Ilias Chair) and wingers, which could align with Stéphan's wing-play emphasis. Their defensive solidity can vary, and like many Championship clubs, they might face challenges with squad depth and injuries.
* Need for Consistency: QPR has experienced significant fluctuations in form and managerial changes in recent years. A manager who can provide stability and build a coherent long-term vision is crucial.
Potential Match Analysis:
* Alignment with Cifuentes' foundation: Stéphan's focus on possession, high press, and dynamic attacking play seems broadly compatible with the direction QPR has been moving under Cifuentes. This could mean less of a drastic tactical overhaul, allowing players to build on existing principles.
* Utilizing attacking talent: If QPR retains creative players and quick wingers, Stéphan's emphasis on wing play and committed attacking movements could be beneficial. He looks to get players into the box, which could lead to more goalscoring opportunities.
* Defensive Structure: His focus on a solid defensive foundation and patterned traps could help QPR become more defensively organized, which is often crucial for success in the Championship.
* Adaptability for Championship: The Championship is a demanding league requiring tactical flexibility. Stéphan's willingness to adjust formations and game plans would be a strong asset.
* Development of Players: Stéphan has experience developing young players at Rennes. If QPR has promising young talent, he could be a good fit for nurturing their potential.
Potential Challenges/Considerations:
* Championship Experience: Stéphan has primarily managed in Ligue 1. The Championship is physically demanding and unique, and adapting to its intensity and unpredictability can be a challenge for managers new to the league.
* Squad Recruitment: For Stéphan to fully implement his style, he would need the right players. QPR's ability to recruit players that fit his specific tactical needs (e.g., ball-playing center-backs, versatile attacking players) would be key.
* Financial Resources: QPR's financial situation might dictate the level of player Stéphan could attract, and he would need to be adept at working within those constraints.
Conclusion:
On paper, Julien Stéphan's coaching philosophy, with its emphasis on dynamic attacking play, tactical flexibility, and a strong defensive structure, appears to be a potentially good match for QPR. His style aligns with the recent positive tactical shifts at the club and could leverage their existing attacking talent. The main question mark would be his adaptation to the unique demands of the Championship, but his reputation as an adaptable and intelligent coach suggests he could be successful. It would ultimately depend on the specific squad he inherits and the resources available for recruitment.

Very interesting. Written at the peak of his career, mind. The Guardian piece is from when he was about to get sacked at Rennes (second stint) are leaving Strasbourg. So, things didn’t go well for him after this article.

What I found most interesting from this was his preference for 2 up top. That would be a major departure from our “game model”, but might just work Kelman and Celar in this league, with one of them playing with Frey. Could bring out the best in them.

He also sounds quite direct, which seems a little at odds with the game model and everything being done in the youth teams.

We arent blessed with pace so unless we recruit he wont have that option either.

Whatever happens, we hope for midtable, we dream of the play offs and, in reality, we we expect a relegation battle.

Isn't there a move toward more direct play in attack rather than Guardiola's positional play/build from the back? If so, we might find we're up to speed with the latest fad in football!

I like the sound of this guy. The guardian guy not so much.

The discussion there about movement off the ball in particular is something I'd love to see more of at Rangers, we often look incredibly static in possession

Edit. Mind you a lot of the criticism in the guardian piece seems to focus on recruitment not being coherent... Which won't necessarily be in his hands here... Not sure if that is encouraging or not tbh.
