Madsen as a number 10? Nourry will want him in the team. Kelman playing off him, if he isnt sold. Otherwise it will be Celar

The QPR summer managers rumours thread on 08:51 - Jun 12 by dmm | Isn't there a move toward more direct play in attack rather than Guardiola's positional play/build from the back? If so, we might find we're up to speed with the latest fad in football! |
Agree. I have thought for some time there could be a return to 442, as all tactics and formations come in and out of fashion. It does have a problem when facing a 433 or 4231, in that you are always outnumbered in the middle of the pitch so teams playing 442 will have to be direct and bypass it. That may not be to everyone’s taste and nor does it align with the club game model. But if you have good piano carriers in central midfield, a good target man and a decent “little man” on the shoulder, and strong centre backs, you’ll probably be quite successful. It’ll suit Paul Smyth, less so Chair and Dembele, as they’ll need to be more disciplined in their positioning and tracking back.

The QPR summer managers rumours thread on 08:54 - Jun 12 by FDC | I like the sound of this guy. The guardian guy not so much. The discussion there about movement off the ball in particular is something I'd love to see more of at Rangers, we often look incredibly static in possession Edit. Mind you a lot of the criticism in the guardian piece seems to focus on recruitment not being coherent... Which won't necessarily be in his hands here... Not sure if that is encouraging or not tbh. The two pieces are a really good example of how you can make a positive and negative out of the same thing. The first one loves the way he's flexible and able to adapt his system and style depending on opposition and circumstance, the second says here he comes again with all his flip flopping about and constantly changing systems and styles.

I think when done well it’s the most exciting way to play but probably the riskiest when it goes wrong and nowadays relies on a level of athleticism we chronically lack. I guess in that formation Dembele would see himself as the little man striker but I’ve seen nothing yet to suggest he’s up to it. Bring back the WM formation and we’re really talking.

Ha well yeah Dembele will need to be a lot more disciplined out of possession! Can he do it though? Chair I think would get more joy playing behind the striker if the formation was more 4411. Equally if it's four across midfield then you could have Smyth/AN Other as the out and out winger with the other "winger" being more disciplined and supporting the central midfielders. Anyway let's see what happens in terms of recruitment. Assuming that M. Stephan is the man in charge.

There is too much emphasis on formations. At the end of the day football is about the quality of players you have. In our case we haven’t had a god enough squad (for sometime) with enough decent footballers both technical and physical. Marti showed the ability to squeeze more than the sum of the parts out of the squad he had. If the players aren’t up to it a good coach has to find a way to get the best out of what he has. Our recruitment has been rank bottom and yet here we are with another season looming and the squad is toilet stuff. If it’s going to work at R’s at least give the new guy a decent squad, keep them fit and give him a strong bench. None of that is likely to happen so it will be rinse and repeat next season. It’s all so obvious.

Anybody writing him off based on 1/2 news articles needs their head checked. Might be good might be bad, if anyone on here is a Ligue 1 expert and/or a Rennes fan then fair enough. Otherwise we have to just get behind him, and hope. It’s always been this way, Nourry or otherwise

Well, he's won the French Cup, and achieved qualification for the Europa and Champions League, so if he does all of that in his first three seasons here, I'll probably just about give him a pass...

There does seem to be a lack of genuine wingers. And as you say these wingers have to defend more. The reason I can’t see 442 coming back is because the 2 on the middle would get overrun by the other side. We’re definitely not a 442 side though given our lack of strikers and our wide men like to cut inside all the time (except Smyth). In fact Chair and Dembele are probably not really “wide men”.

Yeh we already have to pick three in midfield to stop us getting overrun in our existing system, so if we were to play like that we'd be needing new CMs. You also can't pick Dembele on the wing in a 4-4-2. Not without putting your full back in an early grave anyway. On the other side of it, a rare manager who likes to play two up front - could be big for Kelman.
