England women’s team 21:58 - Jul 4 with 14582 views | stowmarketrange | Anyone else going to Zurich tomorrow night? We are sat behind one of the goals in section B11,and although I’ll be wearing an England shirt rather than a QPR one,I’ll be waving my QPR flag, especially if Chloe comes on. Come on England.

Of course you do. | | | |

England women’s team on 08:39 - Jul 19 by JamesB1979 | I like watching England women’s team and will watch their games. But, I watch female athletes, tennis players, the rugby side, gymnasts and I’m a bit in awe of way they perform and levels they reach. For example the power the tennis shots are hit and the accuracy, any of the gymnast routines and the hits in the rugby…….I don’t quite get so impressed with women’s football. That’s not comparing it to men’s, it’s just when I compare to other women’s sports. The goal keeping is still very poor and I don’t understand why as an example. Players like Bronze and James are some exceptions, with power and skill they have. But it’s a minority for me. |
I think that's an interesting and well-balanced comment for the debate - although what I would say is that there are far better female teams and players than this current England side and the form they are showing at the moment. I thought that Swedish striker was excellent, for example. It's a bit like the England women's cricket team right now. They are not playing well and if you were to watch them you may make the same comments about women's cricket and cricketers. But then if you watch the Aussie women cricketers, you can't (sadly) fail to be impressed by their skills, standards, fitness, athleticism.

I'd argue that in sports like tennis, gymnastics, track & field etc etc, there's been far less of a gender gap to bridge in terms of visibility on TV, access to top coaching, and role models for young girls to aspire to. 50 odd years ago, the likes of Olga Korbut, Nadia Comaneci, Chris Evert, Billie Jean King, Mary Peters, Renate Stecher etc etc were global icons...which inspired the greats who followed them. Women's football (and cricket, rugby) had nothing even remotely approaching that til literally the last decade or so...and even now, has to deal with way more negativity than those other (primarily individual) sports. It's a long, slow process - but having coached girls football for 20 years, it's a very welcome one - and much as Barton & co may not like it, the presence of female pundits, commentators etc (and yes, even letting them talk about the blokes playing) is a vital part of that package in making young female footballers feel energised enough to keep prodding that glass ceiling.

Yeah agree but that wasn’t really my point. I’m just giving my view on how I see it today. With the exposure the game gets now, it will improve and that’s a good thing.
England women’s team on 09:49 - Jul 19 with 840 views | ted_hendrix | I've watched snippets of Women's football, It's never done anything for me the bottom line being If England make the final whenever that Is I won't be watching It. I did watch the highlights against Sweden the other night and although It's got nothing to do with the football the commentator was absolutely dreadful, screaming at the top of her voice every time England had a shot or nearly had a shot, I cant put up with that. I've looked at Women's football on more than one occasion not to make a judgement but with the Intention of seeing what It's like, the result being a complete shrug of the shoulders.

Side issue here, but strong agree on the cricket. I bloody loved the Charlotte Edwards England women's team of the noughties. First got my attention by winning the Women's Ashes in 2005, went on to retain them twice, won the ODI World Cup and the T20 in 2009. On the men v women thing, Adam Gilchrist described Sarah Taylor as the best wicket keeper in the world, male or female, at the time and IIRC she did play for a few mens' sides. It's been very disappointing to watch the Aussies head over the hill out of sight. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

India too. Saw Smriti Mandana batting live a couple years ago. She was amazing but the leftie they've got now, Deepti Sharma, is different class. Women's cricket doesn't have quite as much raw pace with the ball and power with the bat but the concession is they bring the boundary ropes in a couple of metres. I suppose it's similar to Golf having different tee placements to allow for the same par score. Entertainment-wise, its really good.

When Danny Baker did his Radio Saturday morning one of the callers was a bloke who'd become an England International by playing for the Men's Netball Team. He said basically the standard was so low he got into the team due to turning up.

5 or 6 years ago, this (fat) bloke in an “England” hoodie was standing next to my daughter’s coach at an U14 game, cheering her team on etc, etc. After the game, one of the team asked the coach, “who was the bloke standing next to you?” and she said “He plays for the England men’s team”. When my daughter told me, I said, “What? That soppy looking fat bloke in the Sports Direct hoodie!?”. Fast forward to today and you’ve now got mixed teams, so my 5ft 9in daughter gets marked by a 6ft 6, 15 stone bloke. So you were s*** at Basketball, fine, but just play against other blokes, eh?

What about the cockless 4s in womens rowing who gets to investigate that to see if its legit . I think the conversation about womens/girls football depends on posters having daughters or granddaughters playing and having to sit through countless tournaments from the time they joined up until they finsh school. The standard varies so much its stunning but it becomes something bigger meeting the same families and watching the girls develop their skills and team spirit makes it so enjoyable .Of course the liquor devoured in the Motel 6 lobby really helps too .
