In Advanced Talks With Edwards on 22:33 - Aug 27 with 4065 views | numptydumpty | I think if we got Edwards in, he also would be a very decent option at centre mid which we do need another option. I really cant understand why Saints seem to not rate him at all but i hope this happens. Big few days ahead

In Advanced Talks With Edwards on 22:48 - Aug 27 with 3848 views | EalingHoop81 | As exciting as this is, it makes me nervous on what we are doing financially, albeit the loan with permanent option does give us the chance to assess at the end of the year. I think this and Saito is the Eze money done and whilst it’s very positive, we’ll really need for a few of these players to be saleable assets in the coming 2-3 years, I.e. not do what we did with Dykes, Dickie, Dieng etc, but rather Kelman and Armstrong but to a bigger extent with turning these guys for £5m+ fees. Whilst I can think of 10-12 players that could have significant upside and profit, it feels we are panicking a bit spending potentially £9m since Sunday with decent wages as well, because Watford and Coventry were big wake up calls.

In Advanced Talks With Edwards on 18:35 - Aug 27 by 1JD | But why is that a fly in the ointment here? In other words you are suggesting there is a problem of some kind we have to overcome. There is no problem as far as I can see, since Pboro have zero say in any transfer from Saints. Profit sell on or otherwise. They’ll get what they are given, and may get nothing. Like us with Armstrong, potentially. |
Simple mathematics. If Southampton want their money back they are going to have to sell at £6m because they will only get half that.£6m is a big fly for us.

I’m still firmly on the side that this is all bolox. However I wonder if money were to be raised towards buying Edwards by resurrecting the reported offers for Varane in pre season. £5m was banded about and I think Edwards would be a massive upgrade on Varane in midfield.

I’m not aware of any deal negotiated in the modern game that is based on the total sale price. No one signs that clause in this day and age, been tracking transfers for some years, and that clause appears nowhere other that in fan pub talk.

Aside from Gk :( Feels like a huge gamble is being played though, 100% faith in the plan. Have to be able to get promoted or sell a player or two next summer to keep it going. Could be that Chair has been sold for decent money as well.

Definitely the thing they got most wrong, our best GK is playing League 1 football for some reason | | | | Login to get fewer ads

I'm afraid they haven't though. I'm boring myself, but they haven't sorted the CM area. Hayden is not a ball playing 6 or a box to box 8 that we desperately need. Some have said Edwards (if it's true) could play CM. He can't as he'd have to take Varanes place. Varane is clearly the big sale so he has to play, and improve, for his value to go up to increase his value for next summer.

Was thinking about that too. But we got Burrell deal done pretty quiet, so deals can be done without too much media coverage. Well, we know it in a few days

Varane was bought because the statistical modelling they use had him as a 99% Hayden match. So there's also that. I'm pleased Hayden's here. He'll help solve one problem - we're weak as pis and too easy to play through. But, like you say, he's not going to progress the ball out of midfield.

Maybe, just maybe, we’ve decided that the existing game model is not right and we’re going to change it, be a little more direct, and play from the oppo’s half, not our own box? Outside of RND (absolute necessity for any formation), if you take a step back, it does feel like we’re making signings, or trying to make signings that are ones fans want/have called for (because they’ve seen them play for us) rather than with a strategic view to fix the issues with our squad suiting this game model.

So I think Chair wants to play that role, before he was injured he started coming deeper to collect the ball. He was looking so fit before the curse hit him in training ( I am assuming that is the truth btw). He has all the attributes and despite some comments on here in the past he does come back and tackle. Re Edwards, I’ll eat my hat if he comes

Well if it took a 7-1 defeat to sharpen minds on this bloody game model then perhaps it was worth it. I notice we binned off the sodding goal kick routine at 5-0.

If we're going to spunk £6m it should be on a midfielder. I love Edwards but that is a lot of money. My mate who called Kone (bang on) and Max Lowe ( ) swears blind that we're about to sign Edwards, but haven't seen anything anywhere else.

Well I love Edwards and would love him here. But it's clear as day the midfield is the area we need major surgery, and has been all summer. I've been saying for months Lewis O'Brien would have transformed us, he goes to Wrexham and then we get Eze money. Frustrating. But it's that profile of player we need.

Since we've missed O'Brien, is there someone else like him that we could find? I guess that's the million dollar question... [Post edited 28 Aug 8:19]

We didn't have the Eze money then! Maybe Ruben has intervened and said spend up to FFP limits. Btw I don't believe any of this is anything more than speculation. [Post edited 28 Aug 11:47]

True. It just all seems a bit weird at the moment. I guess a 7-1 defeat will wake you up to yourself.
