I wonder how Dembele is feeling. The current forward line looks undroppable, with Chair and Poku to come back. It might be that he finds himself well down the pecking order.

Simply hasn't taken his chances/shown enough effort when given the opportunity and now i'm wondering where he fits in.

He'll feature loads this season. 46 games, we'll have injuries and loss of form from some players. He is a very good player. Only reason we didn't seem him today apparently was because Vale scored just before he was supposed to come on.

He will be needed. If we were one down he would have been on

I'd have Dembele ahead of Chair personally. But, competition for places is very welcome and I like the idea of no player being an automatic starter and having to earn their place by dint of playing well.

At the moment, we haven't played more than one league game a week. As the three game weeks come along, him, Chair, Poku, Frey and Kolli will be important.

I would disagree that he hasn't worked hard enough to earn a starting place. He was probably our stand out player in pre-season.Unfortunate that his injury coincided with Saito's arrival, who has been on fire since he came back - much better than last season
Dumbell will get plenty game time and is still an important player for us

Perhaps an ‘impact sub’ is a better role for him. Not one he’d want of course but he’s not terribly robust to say the least and doesn’t have an obvious place in the current formation. Probably has more worth when chasing a game and not having to think about defending too much.

This. Hopefully he is feeling like everyone is now, you have to play really well to keep your place, and take your chance when you get it.

Exactly: the players not in the first team know that they have a real challenge to get back in and if they do they will have to work very hard to stay there. Dembele needs to improve both his match fitness and his defensive contribution as both Vale and Saito are well ahead of him at the moment.

Every player in the squad will be needed at some point this season. He just needs to take his chance when he plays.

We have the first mythical 3 game week coming up, there will be lots of rotation and I am sure Dembele will play his part with possibly get a start.

Looking forward to seeing Chair back as well. The current side looks strong, but we need to look after them as well. I thought the Varanne sub was a good example.

I’ve been quite disappointed with Dembele, brilliant on his debut v Sheff U but I struggle to think of any performance since that could be described as any more than average, seem to have plenty of other options in his position at the moment.

I heard he went out on 68th minute today to warm up and pulled up with cramp; true?

I’m interested to see how he does when given his chance next week.
Shoe-lee-an has said definite changes due to three game week and expect him one.
He’s a threat when his attitude is right and, as people have said, the squad seem to know you gotta be on it or you’re gone.

Unfortunate today not to get on, along with some of the other subs, but really other than potentially putting Field on for Kone or Vale(moving Burell out wide, I couldn't see how or why he would sub anyone once we were one up, as the team had balance, shape, and organisation, and nobody looked out on their legs. Changing anything at that point would have been far riskier than the pay off.

Funny, I thought we looked well out of legs, Swiss.

We were hanging on there at the end, I thought, and physical and mental tiredness was really evident.

We shipped a few big chances late on.

It's a squad game, everyone will be needed in those 3 game weeks in winter.

Personally could see Dembele replacing either Saito or Vale for tactical or load management reasons.

The bigger worrier should be Chair. Not totally sure he fits in in a 442

Has done nothing in the past year to suggest he is made of the right stuff to play Championship football or higher.

Is injury prone, not physically strong enough, defensively not interested and his attitude stinks - see the shrug when Paal was screaming at him as the 3rd Burnley goal went in last April.

He won't get in this team, and I can't believe I'm about to say this, I'd have Smyth ahead of him.
Needs to up his workrate big time.

Aside from that how do you rate him?

Technically very highly!

Which is why he is so frustrating. He's on the bench now with Chair and Poku to return. He is not even going to be on the bench when they come back.

I was excited by Dembele's signing and felt he could become another Chair type of player. I still think he has the ability but I have growing doubts about how he applies his talents. He hasn't really clicked into place since his arrival and he often looks frustrated with himself. Something isn't right with him.

Dembele on 17:36 - Sep 21 with 757 viewsLeedsR

I definitely think he has the skill and ability. The question is how long it will take him to adapt to the rigours of the Championship given his injuries. As a rule, I think it takes a season or so for new players either coming up from a lower division, or a foreign league, to properly adjust before they properly get to grips with the pace/physicality etc. That’s assuming they can make the step up.

Take Madsen and to a lesser extent Saito. Yes they have different players around them now and that obviously makes a difference, but they are better now for having played a significant number of games in this league. Dembele will get there, but needs more games.

Of course there are exceptions - Kone seems to be taking to the Championship like a duck to water, but that’s why he’s an exception.

some might already be worried about securing a place on the bench when Chair/JCS/Poku are back which will hopefully raise standards and effort across the whole squad

Agree with the second part of your post, bit the first one is such a mad, mad take in my opinion. Dembele has got it going forward, but absolutely nothing facing the other way. Chair is slightly better going forward and infinitely better defensively. A straight choice between them two is no sort of choice at all.

Watching Arsenal v City at the moment and for all the world class flair on show, the workrate on show from both teams is outstanding to a man. This amount of effort with and without the ball should be the minimum baseline. I just do not see that with Dembele.

Lovely skills if we can get him out there as a free man, but I am just not sure we can play with a luxury.

May sound harsh; he is a good player, but needs to strengthen up and wise up defensively...

Can we go out yet?

I thought there was a sign of toughening up a bit, when he came on at Wrexham. One small step on the road to doing a Madsen.
