Rest of the Championship thread 11:07 - Aug 10 with 251523 views | Hunterhoop | Toyed with this idea last season. Shall we have a thread to discuss, comment on, cover the rest of the league? A place to discuss other teams’ results, performances, financial implosions, etc? For example, last night, anyone catch either of the first two games? I didn’t. But somewhat surprised/worried Blackburn scored 4 given how they are meant to struggle. Was it Derby being utter sh*te? Sounds like Preston are continuing in the same vein of being incredibly dull. Clive, what do you think? Worth making a sticky? Might reduce the number of threads to manage.

Lots of players there who were needed to get them up but probably aren’t still up to this level. Deep pockets but how deep for this league? |
Surely they must be only allowed to spend what they earn under ffp rules.Unless the car park is suddenly worth £50 million?

Difficult to sympathise too much with anybody who makes Wayne Rooney their manager though. Fck me lads, were the clues not there? I'd be shtting it if I was Preston. Completely collapsed. Dreadful against us last week. Hull though, Portsmouth away, not the place you want to go for a result is it?

Such a huge relief not having to go through that. I’d be a wreck all week this week if it was us in Hull or Preston position. Not a game that is ever enjoyable to sit through.

If they had QPR last game, they may have had a chance of turning the GD around 😆. If Marti does leave I really wouldn't be too disappointed if we seeked out Miron Muslic as a replacement. Rest of the Championship thread on 13:10 - Apr 24 by TheChef | Is it fair to say that none of Ipswich Leicester and Southampton blew big bucks on players this season? So maybe they're adapting the yo yo approach, cash the money and hopefully come up with squads that can survive the Prem for a few seasons. |
No. Ipswich spent approaching £100m. But it wasn't enough. WTF.

Them and Birmingham will be under different rules though next season. It's a bit easier under the Salary Cost Management Protocol in L1 and L2 to spend your way to promotion with wealthy owners. Birmingham for example having come down from the Championship were allowed an extra 10% on their turnover spend on wages (70% when it's normally 60% of turnover). Transfer fee spending also isn't counted in the SCMP so you can do what they did with Stansfield spending £15m. Next year they're going to be like the rest of us allowing only a rolling £39m loss over three seasons.

I might be wrong about this but I think I read that the season in League 1 gets counted in the FFP calculation for the rolling 3 years so on that basis they are likely to breach straight away

Wrexham will be fine for FFP for now, they ‘only’ lost £2m last year. The whole thing is built on a house of cards however. Their wage bill in 22/23 in the Conference was £7m. In 23/24 in L2 it was £12m. This year in L1 it will be £15m+ already and next season they will be one of the divisions highest payers. They can afford it right now as they have the hype of the show and off the back of that United alone are paying more than £10m a season to sponsor the shirts. Their sponsorship revenue in L2 was higher than most of the championship already. However as 95+% of those following them now care only about the show and not the club as the players they’ve highly publicised get moved on (because they were playing below their level on mega wages and are now out of their depth) all it will take is a bad season of ratings for the hype to die, the show to be cancelled and the whole thing to collapse. Reynolds is the one with real money and he will be off like a shot the second it gets a tiny bit tricky. The question is just how high up they can get before it all falls apart.

What gets me is that allegedly Reynolds is worth $350m, whereas Ruben is worth $1.6bn. Yet it's us that will get restricted by FFP.

The Wrexham owners, through their celebrity status have managed to bring in money and sponsors to the club to help fund the spending. Being in the Championship nest season and only a step away from the Premier League, the interest generated and accompanying sponsorship is likely to increase. The celebrity status of the Wrexham owners trumps the wealth of Ruben because of the way the rules are written and their ability to attract big name, high value sponsors

Their ffp situation has nothing to do with Reynolds’ personal wealth. They’re fine because they are bring in plenty of sponsorship money off the back of the tv show and interest it’s created stateside. Ruben could theoretically quite easily bolster the clubs chances by having his mates via their Malaysian companies sponsor us for mega wonga. It won’t happen though as nobody in Malaysia gives two shits about QPR so there is no upside for his mates and business associates to leverage to make it something resembling worthwhile.

It probably will for Birmingham having gone down from the Champ and come straight back up.

Still, Oxford will likely be sht so there's that.

Hull have put themselves in this mess losing both home games to Luton and Derby. You can't afford to lose those 6 pointers in the final few games of the season. Same with Preston losing to us and Plymouth at home. In contrast Luton won at Hull and Derby and those big away wins will probably save them.

£15m potentially rising to £20m with add ons. Fulham must have been laughing for someone who'd played ten times (four starts) for them and who they probably nabbed for f*ck all from Exeter's academy. Sky Sports Wrexham definitely incoming next season.
