As they have already started, we need a thread. Suspect most of these will be wrong/clickbait sites, but lets store them in one place.

A no 9 is an out and out striker, Shirley? If not, what number does he wear?

A 9 is usually a bigger CF who can hold the ball up and bring players in (e.g. Frey during the half-season that he's fit), where Kelman seemed to be more of a ST who could be in and around the box and score goals but who wasn't going to work as a target man. I'm also not sure what one would call that nunber-wise these days (10 normally, but isn't a 10 now an AM like Chair? I don't know).

It's part of why I think we struggle with Celar, since he looks more like a box poacher than a hold-up man. We keep asking him to hold up the ball as our out ball and he doesn't seem suited to it. Burrell might be able to do that by pace instead (i.e. balls over the top rather than for him to hold up) but that remains to be seen.

So much simpler back in the day;
1 -GK
2-RB
3-LB
4 - Holding Midfielder
5 & 6 - CB's
7 - Ball player
8 - Attacking Midfielder
9 - 'Big' CF
10 - 'Little' CF
11- Winger
12 - unused sub

I agree! The current shorthand using numbers to distinguish specific roles does my head in. Why does it only apply to certain positions? I cannot recall a reference to a 2, 3, 4, 5, 7 or 11? So can a midfield player only be playing a 6, 8 or 10 role?
Is a 'false 9' really a 6, 8 or 10?.
A false 9 used to be a deep lying centre forward, I think made famous by Don Revie when he played for Manchester City? I think it was based on the Hungary team of that era?
There seems to be an insatiable appetite to make the simple complex.

Kelman had 12 months left on his contract and was clear he wasn't going to renew and wanted out. He was an asset declining in value, and we made a pragmatic decision to sell before his value further decreased. There's also the fact that everyone's view on Kelman was negatively tainted from poor appearances in the past (albeit with a very limited sample size).

If we signed Kone, we'd be getting a player who wants to be here and will be under a "multi-year contract", who's value is likely to increase.

Also, new blood. More signings.

I don’t disagree that we had to sell Kelman if he wasn’t going to renew. But it worries me a bit that either we couldn’t /wouldn’t pay him enough to persuade him to renew or he was so unhappy at QPR that he wouldn’t stay for any money. I find it difficult to believe that Charlton offered him an unmatchable wage deal.
Or of course perhaps QPR felt Kelman didn’t fit the game model and we needed to get a different kind of striker. I personally feel that is a pretty bold decision for a team with no striker getting into double figure goals (and currently it seems no fit and available striker at all)
Or perhaps it is all about accounting. Transfer fee received mostly taken as profit in year 1 and transfer fee paid spread over the contract length.
All leaves me feeling a bit uneasy, but if we scrape a flukey 1-0 over Preston on Saturday I will be happy again!

im the same issue we have is we dont have one who can actually play more than one game a month due to various fitness issues and lets be honest he wouldnt be a downgrade on what we presently have scoring wise

I was thinking along the sa,e lines a few days ago. Birmingham have signed other strikers and even though they sold May, Dykes is still only about 4th or 5th choice there.

I would consider resigning Dykes if this deal for Ba is not finalised soon. QPR cannot go into the last week of August with the current set of forwards. They went I to last season with just 3 senior squad strikers and Dykes was one of those. Lessons must hav2 been learnt from that almost disastrous situation.

I don’t really understand the excitement on here about Kone. Are people suggesting that we should take the money we got for selling League One’s top scorer (21 goals in 24/25 of which 1 was a penalty) and spend all that and more on League One’s 6th from top scorer (18 goals of which 4 were penalties)? If so, that seems irrational to me. Or am I missing something?

I understand your concern, but the main reason Kelman was sold was because he had 1 year left on his desk and he refused to sign an extension.

If they fo spend his fee on Kone I think k it could turn out to be a good deal if he can score more than the paltry sum of goals that Frey, Kolli, Celar and Lloyd managed between them last season.

My Twitter using friend is insistent that we're going to reveal a left back today (rumoured to be Lowe) and that we're in the running against Leicester for Koné.

I can't see that anywhere else but he's certain 😅

Any update on this please ??

You could also question why we sent a player out on loan knowing that he only had a year to go when he returned.

Might have been an idea to extend before sending him on loan to cover the bases and then we’d have either got more money or he could have stayed and probably would have started on Saturday.

Now we face the possibility of starting the first game of the season without a striker. At best, it’ll be a striker that hasn’t had much of a preseason or a completely new striker that didn’t even get 15mins last weekend. Failing that, it’s Bennie or the XXS squad.

Those possessed by devils, try and keep them under control a bit, can't you ?

Not heard anything more. I asked him earlier but he never got back to me, so I'm thinking it's nonsense tbh. Did suggest the kilo of salt.

Club countdown seems to be for the season start, though I didn't know the club even had a WhatsApp setup.

This Kone lad could be interesting, but I’m a bit wary… 18 months ago he was in the 9th tier Essex Senior League. We all develop at different rates, but that’s a huge step up, I’d expect him to still be raw AF.

That said, he looks like a unit who knows where the goal is.

As sad as it probably is to admit, the circumstances around him being in the country make me much more wary than the standard he had played at.

If we’d have extended and the loan went badly you’d be moaning as to why we’d extended the contract of a bloke who’d never scored for us and was even useless in League 1.
Damned if you do, damned if you don’t!
Best all round he left and we made a decent fee on him.

I don’t think an extension of younger players on relatively low wages for one year is ever going to be that big an issue, especially if we believe that their future value is higher than it is today. This is after all one of the reasons we would loan someone out - to develop them. Especially at this age.

I think the player would come back more willing to play for the club and the club would benefit from that. It’s a win-win unless you think the loan won’t develop the player, so why send them out in the first place.

I do agree with you, had we extended an older player. That’s a very different situation and something we are starting to correct - hopefully.

(He says, just as the Colback extension is probably being inked….)

I also agree that we have probably made the best, bad decision on the situation with Kelman, given the circumstances we face. I just hope we learn a lesson from the situation and avoid it in future.

This isn’t a process though a process would be build a half decent squad capable of surviving maybe even reaching 15th not going into the new season with , the same strikers we had last year which were all either injured or not very good and some times both. No left back again . Weaker central midfield than we have had in years , oh and the back up is a bunch of untried kids who by the time they leave will be lucky to have a combined appeared total of 100 between them

Oh and a manger who won the cup in 2019 but since the. Has been let’s say average .

That’s not a process it’s doing what we have done but with more social media and praying g one is any good and who we might sell for profit in the coming years . Issue is which division will we be in by the time they are deemed to be the next big thing ?

These numbers are only given so kids can buy up the entire squads shirts for extortionate prices.

Lets start a trend to bring back number 13. Superstitions aren't really a thing, surely...

666 - Diakite should have been in tbe past and perhaps Mbuenge could be given the mantle here !!!

Ray Jones is forever assigned to his old number...

But apparently if 69 is used for any players under the age of consent, the FA / EFL will penalise the club for inappropriate behaviour and quite rightly so too !!!!

Although, really we should never assign a number 9 to any player as its been ten years since Austin mk 1, and ever since no one has resembled a number 9. A dying breed, no doubt !!!

Well the process bit was a little tongue in cheek and I was only really trying to engineer an opportunity for a silly pun. Lighten the mood as the relentless negativity can be a bit much sometimes.

So that went well then 🙄

Have to agree Cate, the relentless drive for a “glass half empty” is strange (or maybe a sign of the modern times where bad news is the only good news - or some will defend it as realism) and we haven’t even played a handful of league games yet. Ahh well.

Just a couple of days to go and we will start to see the direction we are heading. Still hopeful of a couple of loans to plug our known gaps. Looking forward to seeing how our new signings grow into the team. Come on u Rrrrrrssss.

Agreed. Need a couple of signings / loans and to get our first team fit. Bit worrying that our squad is quite small and a lot of players don't appear to be fit, but the squad also has plenty of promise in players like Poku, Adamson and Burrell.

We won't know until the season really gets going, but I'm not getting too 'realistic' until at least 10 games in.
