The remainder of his Toon contract will have been paid up to some extent; so it's not as if he's going to be short of a few bob. He won't realistically expect to continue earning comparable wages so he might be happy to get reasonable wages in lieu of getting more playing time.
However even if we were to bring him or Colbeck back are they fit?
Whatever preseason they've done, I doubt it would allow them to walk straight into any team and I suspect either would be a good few weeks off being ready. |
Ah right, hadn't realised his contract had been terminated early: agree that if Newcastle have paid him off, that makes things easier. At the same time, I've seen people saying that he was on £50k a week at Newcastle, of which Portsmouth paid £6k - if that's anywhere near accurate then surely it'd be too big a step down to what we could afford.
The point about fitness is a good one, but from memory he was pretty consistently available when he was here previously, wasn't he? Also doubt he'd be the sort to slack off too much, wouldn't be surprised if he was training somewhere even as a free agent. I guess we'll see, but even if he needed a few weeks to get fully up to speed I still think he'd do a job for us. |  | | |

I think it's definitely wages that'll be the issue. If he's willing to take 7-10k a week to play with us then that's alright, but we don't want to be handing out 15k+ a week to players with no resale value.

When you look at how much clubs were willing to pay to loan him, and there weren't many, plus he has some Newcastle money in his pocket I don't think he would be too expensive for his final years. Don't think 'The Project' will bother him much though. |  | | |

He is a natural leader and a calm presence so if his wages aren’t too high I think he’d be a good one to have around what’s now a fairly young team. Certainly helped us last time with his experience. |  |

I think he started well for us during the loan but didn't have much of an impact over the last 5 games, which kept us up. As said, solid experienced performer and definitely would add to the squad. | | | |
