Anyone paying £5M for Saito needs their head checking. I’d be okay if he came back for under £1M, but anything more is an absolute waste of money. He’d be on the bench (unless Poku is out for months)

If we’ve got that sort of money a full back and a box to box midfielder should be the priority

Won’t someone think of all those shirt sales in the Far East??

If he can stay fit Hayden is a good replacement for Colback.
He's a tough DMC, takes up all the correct positions and tackles so hard that other players try and pass around him rather than through him. Great to have when defending an attack, really fills in the spaces. If he's not asking the earth then a 2+1 option on our side would be worth doing.
It seems he likes the club and the players, and he also speaks like an intelligent person (so un-footballer-like).
If Saito is £5m then there is no chance, crackers talk that is. We don't need him anyway. We have Smyth, Kolli and Sutton on the left to replace Dembele, who will move over to the right to replace Poku. Or Dembele stays on the left and Smyth runs the right. Not to mention Chair can also play on the left of course.
If, we have that sort of money, we should be putting in a cheeky bid of the same amount for Edwards as that's a position we ned bolstering.
Did I read Max Lowe of Sheff Wed has put his 2 weeks notice in and becomes a free agent tomorrow? Plays Left-back you say?

It said on Max Lowe's Wikipedia that he put in his notice, so if he becomes a free agent I'd love for us to have a look at him. Obvs my twitter-using mate reckoned we were linked with him back when he put the notice in, so I hope there's some truth in that, though it could be that we're looking at Norrington-Davies because we've already been outbid for Lowe's services...

Not a splurge because I think he's worth it (based on what we know so far) but it was still a lot against our very limited FFP headroom (with the addons).

Apparently, according to the locals, Max Lowe is going to stay anyway. Probably means no one wanted to pay the fictional silly money Sheff Wed were or may pay him.
Really, he should move on, maybe for less money, but at least it's real money and also possibly a more extended contract. Otherwise, he risks losing everything if the club shuts down or he is relegated with them and it shuts down.
But no one said Footballers were smart.

It's an interesting position to be in. A theoretical £30k a week wage at Sheffield Wed that you might or might not eventually get paid vs a legitimate £15k wage elsewhere from an actually solvent club.
(Numbers completely made up, I have no idea what Lowe is on)
I have to say I'd be disappointed if we signed Hayden. He'd do a job but can we not do better and sign a young upcoming midfielder, and preferably that box to player we've all be asking for?

I dunno, part of me agrees with you - it would certainly fit the Nourry brief, but the other part of me thinks it would be a sound and pragmatic signing - he's very good, and he gives you that peace of mind - we tried before we've buyed (I know, I know).
LB is the biggest concern now, but I think DMF isn't far behind, and this signing, I think, would tick a few boxes.

Well O’Brien would have been superb but I don’t think we’d have budget for that unless we sold someone. Especially now we’ve bought Kone. I think we are net 2m down this summer from transfers. O’Brien was 5m? Plus some steep wages, we can’t afford that. Maybe if we sold Varane? My view is gradual change, get in Hayden as some experienced cover to sh.ithouse some results during the season, bring a bit of nouse to unexperienced side and then next season sell some players and go for that box to box. We do need cover for that defensive midfield type.

That would be ideal but we've let Colback and Fox go, Cook is almost certainly in his last year and Nardi may be sold.
We are left with an extremely young squad and we could do with an old head or two.

I think Hayden would be great for the role of covering and mentoring Varane. An upcoming box to box player would be perfect but guess we can't get everything we want this window. Interesting we haven't gone into the loan market yet, feel like Collyer who went to WBA would've been decent.

Despite being a good player who fitted in well at QPR during his loan, my fear with Hayden is that he's injury recorde and age goes against him.Given that he's had no major injury in the last season and and a half, I fear he's due one.
Sorry to be be pessimistic about resigning him as I think he is a good footballer and decent fella but imho he's too high risk given our current injuries.

Same, but I don't think it's wrong to make the occasional pragmatic signing if the fee is low enough (free is perfect) and the wages are low enough too. Hayden will add an experienced head in the dressing room.
If we get an Eze sale then we might be able to shop around for more young midfielders but I'm not sure we'll be able to get a box-to-box midfielder (especially not a one with some sort of problem) on our current budget.

Or, he is over his injury woes and not recovering from a long lay off.

Make of it what you will:
Thanks for that. Came across as very understanding of the dilemma the club faced when Cannons contract was terminated. And, quite complimentary of Nourry.

That's our problem - all our signings are 'up and coming '. We need a few old heads in there

Would love to see Hayden come back. He's a quality player, came across really well during his loan spell, was decent for Portsmouth last season, and would surely do a solid job here on a two-year contract. Even if he's 30, that's still a full five years younger than Colback.
The big question would be wages. Nobody's getting a fee for him at this point in his career, so whatever we spend on him would be dead money. He's coming off a big Premier League contract, and won't have Newcastle part-subsidising things any more. Do we really want to risk another Johansen situation?
My guess is he'll probably end up at a club with a slightly higher budget than us (would be a perfect fit for Wrexham's current transfer strategy) but if we can make the sums work I'd be really keen to see him here.

The remainder of his Toon contract will have been paid up to some extent; so it's not as if he's going to be short of a few bob. He won't realistically expect to continue earning comparable wages so he might be happy to get reasonable wages in lieu of getting more playing time.
However even if we were to bring him or Colbeck back are they fit?
Whatever preseason they've done, I doubt it would allow them to walk straight into any team and I suspect either would be a good few weeks off being ready.

Agreed and I'm going to argue against myself here.
Good pro's at Hayden's age give more than just a first 11 option. They can be invaluable around the matchday squad, training etc Huge help to avoid situations like Tuesday night (enough of that already) and they can massively help young players in many ways.
However, when budget's are tight, you need any playing budget outlay to be "putting food on the table" and contributing to an end of season points total in more ways than just a proxy coach.
My opinion on signing him is that based on original stint I thought he was steadying influence but I never really raved about him. However, others far more educated and tactically aware than me have extolled his virtues. It's a big YES from me then for that combined with the way he holds himself in that interview.
